CHAPTER 4

Tiffany's POV

"Going over Austin's! Mom!" I said, scrambling down the stairs and almost tripping on the last one.

"Klutz," Emily said, looking up from the book she was reading.

"Shut up." I stuck my tongue out.

"Did you say you were going to Austin's? Can I come."

"Not a chance." I called back, putting on My shoes and rushing out the door.

Grabbing my skateboard from the garage I rode a few minutes until I saw the familiar house and Austin's dad as usual working in his garden.

"Hi Mr Miller," I called out to him as I skidded to a stop and was immediately greeted with the smell of roses.

"Why hello, Tiff." He gave a good natured smile and started dusting off his gloves and getting up.

The sun shone brightly making the sunflower and marigolds pop. I could stay in this garden all day. Too bad I had to do start the assignment today.

I walked up to the door and opened it, almost bumping into Austin who was reaching for the door as well.

He gave me an unimpressed look pushing back his curls with his hand that fell right back on his forehead.

"Sorry" I rubbed my neck, "I kinda sorta overslept."

"Overslept? Tiff it's 3pm. How much sleep do you need."

"I love sleep." I crossed my arms over my chest. "Don't judge."

"I'm just thankful you made it here before sundown"

"Stop being dramatic" I smacked his shoulder and started climbing the stairs to his room.

He chuckled, following after me.

Books and papers were piled on his table and scattered around his room, his laptop was on his bed along with a notebook which was roughly written on.

"Since you were taking so long, I decided to rearrange my room. You know, do some spring cleaning." Austin said, appearing behind me.

"It's winter."

"No shit Sherlock. Now stop judging my messy room and help with the assignment."

After about 3 hours of studying, goofing off and annoying each other, we were done for the day.

I fell on the bed and he twirled in his chair, pulling out his phone.

"So did you tell them?" He asked swiping on his phone.

"Told my mom, who told my dad, who told his dad." I said, grinning up at him.

He tried to look annoyed, but the corner of his mouth twitched as he held back a smile.

"So? What does it mean?"

"According to an old prophecy it means I'm the chosen one."

"Chosen to do what exactly?" He said, raising an eyebrow.

"Dunno."

He sighed, giving up and went back to his phone.

After a few minutes he abruptly turned the screen towards me, making me jump.

"Check this, people are randomly dying around town."

"Wierd."

I scanned the article, there was no known cause for their deaths.

"Is this related to the prophecy?" He asked pulling his phone back.

"Dunno" I said, shrugging.

"Is there something you actually know."

"I'm gonna go to grandpa's today and get the details."

"Then shouldn't you get going?" He said, looking at the time.

I quietly got up and started picking up my things, in case he decided to start a lecture about being on time.

Mrs Miller was just entering as we came down the stairs.

"Tiff, leaving already? Stay for dinner, dear."

"Maybe another day." I smiled at her. "I'm helping mom with dinner today and Emily with homework."

"Alright then." She gave me a hug before going to her room.

"Bring Emily with you next Time, we'll kill two birds with one stone."

"No way." I scrunched up my nose. "She's annoying."

"She's cute,"

"Austin! She's seven!"

"And you're an idiot." He rolled his eyes. "Leave already."

"Awww, you know you love me," I cooed, opening the door and wiggled my fingers.

He gave me an amused look.

"Yeah right, see ya."

I started riding towards grandma's house. The sun was setting and the sky was giving out an orange glow. It was getting chilly.

I skidded to a stop and went to ring the bell. The door opened and I was greeted by a chest crushing hug and the smell of cookies.

"Tiff! How lovely." Grandma said slowly releasing me.

I smiled and walked inside, going straight into the kitchen picking up a handful of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies.

"Glad you like those dear." She chuckled. "your grandpa is in the study."

I nodded unable to reply or else I'd be wasting precious cookie crumbs.

Swallowing I went and knocked on the door a few times, when I didn't hear a response, I opened the door.

The light was on, books were scattered everywhere and grandpa seemed to have fallen asleep on his chair. With his arms on the table and head down.

I quietly walked up to him and gently shook him.

"Grandpa. Grandpa, you shouldn't sleep here. You'll get a sore back."

He stirred slowly and lifted his head looking at me, rubbing his eyes he sat up.

"Tiff?"

"The one and only." I smiled at him.

"It's good to see you." He smiled, got up and gave me his own chest crushing hug, making me laugh.

"Your father told me of the mark." He said sitting back down. "It is said that the world will become a place of chaos and the only one who can set it right will have the mark of fate etched into them."

That sounded like a pretty big deal. Suddenly being the chosen one didn't feel as great.

"What chaos? And how exactly do I set it right."

"The chaos will become apparent sooner or later." He got up from his chair and grabbed a book off the shelf and handed it to me. "you'll find some useful information in this."

It was an ancient book. I carefully put it in my bag.

"There's a friend of mine who's more knowledgeable about these things. I'll contact you again when I get more information."

"Alright, I better get going then."

After another five minutes of convincing grandma that I couldn't stay for dinner, I was riding back home.

It was pretty dark now. The sun had set and the sky was shades of blue, purple and black.

A/N I wrote this chap 5 times completely different each time and I'm still not fully satisfied with it. Maybe I'm over thinking it too much. I want it to be a smooth read.
