CHAPTER 3

keeping my head low, I walked out onto the street.

'I had left my id card behind, just great.'

Going back was too much trouble so, I decided against it.

People were going about there business. Birds sat puffed up, huddled together.

My stomach growled, yet I didn't feel hungry.

The cold had started seeping into my shoulders. I shuddered.

'Something warm would be nice.'

As if on cue, I spotted a Starbucks not far away. As I entered some girls made their way in. They pushed past me laughing and talking and all sat down at a table near the counter, where another friend was already waiting with drinks.

Nobody noticed me or turned their head as I went to the counter and I let out a breath I didn't even know I was holding.

"Give me something warm, sweet and quick," I said as soon as the employee turned towards me.

"O-kay?" She gave me a slightly confused look but started making my drink nonetheless.

'Wait? I wasn't lactose intolerant or allergic to something was I? well. I guess I'll find out.'

With my hands in my pockets, I leaned on the counter looking over to the girls, one girl now sat arms crossed, lower lip jutting out, sulking as the others laughed and teased her about something.

"Your drink is ready," the employee called out.

Turning around I paid for the drink and took a sip. It was sweet, too sweet. I liked it.

Something warm was all I needed, smiling I grabbed the change and started to walk out.

Just as I opened the door, I heard a loud crash and immediately after, a scream. my heart sank as I turned around and I heard another scream and another and another.

The employee along with two of the girls had collapsed and people were panicking. One of the girls had broken into tears. Someone was calling 911.

The cup fell from my hand, the drink spilling everywhere.

'This wasn't happening.'

Another person screamed as someone else collapsed. That seemed to snap me out of it as I ran out on the street and I kept running.

My breathing was hard and my lungs were on fire. my hands now numb were pushing people out of the way. I heard people screaming and shouting behind me but I didn't look back.

I had now run into a neighborhood. my legs had started trembling now and after a few steps, I fell forward. looking around, I was alone.

'This isn't happening. this isn't happening.'

"THIS ISN'T HAPPENING!!!"

screaming at the top of my lungs didn't help. I kept walking. kept thinking.

'what was happening? why was it happening? what was even wrong with me? I didn't even know who I was supposed to be.'

I don't know how long I kept walking around the streets but eventually, the sun began to set.

after wandering around a bit more, I found a playground. all the kids had gone home. it was empty. sitting on the swing I started kicking as hard as I could, leaning back as far as I could. the cold and freezing wind hitting my face with each swing. I pushed and pushed until I was swinging so high I could almost swing over the swing itself.

I jumped.

my legs numb and frozen didn't stick the landing and I landed on my knees and hands.

blood dripped from my hands onto the ground, my jeans had ripped and knees were bruised.

it took a while for me to feel the pain, the burning sensation, then like magic, the pain started to disappear and so did the wound.

"HEY! you! what do you think you're doing?!"

some sort of security guard was walking up towards me.

slowly I stood up, dusting myself off.

"I....uh...um."

"don't think I didn't see that. this park is for kids. not grown-ass punk teens like you." with that he grabbed me by the arm and started pulling.

"Don't!!" as soon as he touched me I aggressively pushed him away and made a run for it.

"you little! don't think I'll let you off easy."

I glanced back as I ran, he was right behind me and catching up.I looked forward and focused on outrunning him.I stopped after a few minutes. He wasn't there anymore.

it was getting dark and if I didn't find some shelter I was gonna freeze to death.

'Can I freeze to death?'

after walking down some more streets I was starting to lose hope of finding shelter and I couldn't feel most of my body when I saw an open garage.

A car was parked, but someone had forgotten to close it.

this was probably the most shelter I was gonna find. looking around I found a dusty carpet. lying down in a corner where I would hopefully avoid being noticed, I cocooned myself in it.

it wasn't a luxury hotel room but it would do.
