Chapter 20: A Natual

Hiya! This is the song what would be playing at the concert. There is a better version that the strumbella's did but that song wasn't on Youtube, instead, enjoy the classic version.

"I was surprised that your parents actually let you go to the concert on a Thursday night," Cami said as I got into her car the next night.

I smiled slyly at her. "That's because they think I'm studying with you tonight," I said as I applied some red lipstick to my lips that I had in my purse.

"Oh El, you pulled that move right out of Paulo's book, didn't you?" Cami chuckled as she backed out of the driveway.

I smiled. She wasn't wrong. "I did."

Cami smiled at me as she sped off to the concert. There were a few minutes of silence as I applied last-minute touch-ups to my makeup. "So, is Jaimie still single?" she asked, making conversation.

I would always find Cami's love for him humorous, but this time, I didn't. I wish I knew the answer to her question, but I had barely seen Jaimie these past few weeks. He was always off doing something or hanging with someone which was not like him. It made me worried that either he was avoiding me or he had a secret lover. Regardless of what the answer may be, I was hurt because he used to tell me so many things and now he was always so silent. "Maybe."

"What do you mean, maybe? I thought Jaimie was your favorite brother. He was the one that you spent the most time with."

In the past, that was the truth, but now, Paulo seemed to be the one always around when I needed someone. "He was. But I hadn't seen him much. We used to hang out in the evening, but lately, I hadn't seen him even there. It's like he doesn't even live in the same house."

"Maybe he's dating someone then," Cami said with a hint of sadness.

I looked at Cami, who looked so upset. It was her dream to date Jaimie and just the idea of him with someone else was depressing. "Hey, we don't know that for a fact. But once I know, I'll tell you ASAP."

She brushed some of her curly brown hair out of her face, then smiled as her mood suddenly improved. "That would be so great."

"If you care about him so much, why don't you tell him how you feel?" I was always a firm supporter of honesty when it bettered the situation. That was one reason I kept my health secretive since opening up about it would help no one. But this, if she was honest, it would help her and maybe even Jaimie because they would be a cute couple.

Cami shook her head, looking terrified. "No way. I can't do that."

I knew that wasn't true. Cami was very capable of talking to my brother since she had done harder things before. "But the thing is, I think you can."

She frowned, not liking the idea. "And look at that. We're here. We'll talk about this later," Cami said as she pulled into a parking space in front of a brick building, breathing a sigh of relief, happy to end this conversation.

I looked up at the building and smiled as my thoughts quickly turned to what I should expect in there. I had never been to a concert before. I normally never had the time nor a reason to go. But with Callum in a band, I now had a reason and I was bursting with excitement.

Cami got out of her car and pulled on her leather mini skirt as if that would help give it length. She scrunched her hair and smeared some lipstick on before she walked to the front door with such confidence, as if she went to this place all the time, although I knew she hadn't. But Cami was so good at acting like she belonged, nearly as good as myself. However, recently, I hadn't felt like myself as my confidence wavered. I wasn't sure if people noticed, but I sure did.

We walked up to the doorman and flashed the cards that Callum gave us. He nodded and let us in without wasting a second.

I stepped into the dimly lit room and squinted. The place smelt like stale beer, sweat, and cigarettes, causing me to scrunch my nose and wondered if all venues smelt as pleasant as this one. I looked around myself, noticing that the small venue was already packed. I never thought Callum's band was this popular since he talked about it like it was a garage band, but this turnout was more than just a garage band.

I crossed my arms over my skin tight long sleeve shirt, already feeling out of my comfort zone. I didn't know what to do as I waited for the band to come onstage. Did I look too out of place? Maybe it wasn't a good idea to come here after all. I rubbed my eyes as the lights started to give me a headache.

"Come on, El!" Cami said as she pulled me into the thick of the crowd, bumping shoulders with people until we were at the foot of the stage.

Cami danced to the background music that played as she seemed in her element here. But I kind of felt like Jaimie at Paulo's basketball game, a fish out of water. I didn't know a thing about concerts, but Cami, on the other hand, knew too much about them.

"You just need to relax a little, El," Cami said as she danced against me.

I nodded. Outside of the ice, I didn't know how to dance; I was awkward and slightly robotic, but I could at least try. I started to dance slightly with Cami until Callum's band stepped onto the stage and the crowd roared.

Callum spotted us instantly and threw us a smile, then waved to the crowd.

I smiled at him, and suddenly, all of my awkward feelings went away as I was reminded why I was here. For him.

"Thanks for coming out tonight. For anyone that has forgotten who we are, or hey, maybe this is your first time, we are the Hellions," Callum said over the microphone.

I cheered, and he smiled back at me, then turned his back to the audience and said a few words to his band members quietly. He nodded, then turned back to us as the drummer started the rhythm, then the guitars kicked in.

Soon Callum was singing along.

I had never heard Callum sing before. But listening to him now, I knew that this was something that he was born to do. He was a natural like I was to skating.

"And those were the best days of my life." He sang as he danced around the stage. "Standing on your mama's porch and the way you held my hand, I knew it was now or never."

I smiled as I watched them play. He was in his element and was completely himself up there. I have never seen him so relaxed. "Man, this song is the best!" Cami shouted over the music to me.

I nodded as I watched the show, unable to take my eyes off them. They were amazing. They had some real talent.

As the music continued into the night, I got tired, feeling my energy fade quickly, but it was manageable as I pushed it back to the corner of my mind , zoning into the music. Over the loud music which numbed my pain, for a moment, I was actually feeling like myself.

"I haven't seen you smile this much in a while," Cami said as she danced to the music.

"I hadn't felt like myself in a while."

Before I knew it, Callum's band was on the last song, but as tired as I was, I didn't want it to end. Tomorrow meant a new set of challenges, but while I was here, I was just Ellis da Souza, here to support her boyfriend.

"Thank you, Portland!" Callum said into the mic as he finished the song.

The crowd cheered for the band and I followed their lead, smiling up at Callum as I saw black dots in my vision causing me to lose my balance and fall into Cami.

She caught me instantly. "Whoa. El. Take it easy," she said with a chuckle. "You've been having a habit of running into me, am I that magnetic?"

I played into her joke, thankful that she wasn't concerned. "Yeah, you got that right. That's why you're my best friend."

"Aw El, you're mine too!" she said as she hugged me. She then quickly let go of me and threw me a wink. "So, I'll meet you in the car. Take as much time as you want, but not too much time. I don't want to be waiting for an hour."

I nodded as Callum spun me around to face him, then held me in his arms and kissed me lightly. "Hi you," he said and pulled out of the kiss. He was slightly wet from sweat, but his cologne overpowered the smell of BO.

I wrapped my arms around his neck and smiled. "That, now what was amazing."

"You really think so?" he asked as a crowd formed around us, eager to talk to him. He sighed not wanting this to happen, but I guess this happens when I date a member of the band. He kissed me on the cheek. "I'll meet you in the back?"

"Of course." Although I didn't know where he meant by that.

He chuckled as if he read my mind. He pointed to a door and said, "I'll meet you on the other side of that door."

With a nod, I left him. When I got to the door, I looked at the crowd around Callum, who hung onto him like he was the most important person in the room. It made me somewhat jealous that I wasn't right beside him.

"Are you Ellis?" a guy's voice rang out.

I looked at him and recognized him as the drummer from the band.

I nodded with a smile. "I am."

"Callum told me about you. He won't be too long. He just wants to make sure that the fans know we care about them. But if I'm being honest, he rather be with you. Callum has been with a lot of girls, but out of all the girls he brought to our shows, I had never seen him get nervous performing, like he did for you tonight."

I smiled lightly. I didn't know what to think about that as his words rubbed me in slightly the wrong way. I didn't like the fact that he brought other girls here. I thought this moment was special for us, but it made me think I wasn't anything special. His statement made me wonder how many girls he took here. "I hope that's a good thing."

"It is. Come on, let's get to the back, he'll come in a few," he said to me as he opened the door to the backstage.

I followed him through the door to see a poorly lit hallway. It didn't help that the walls were painted black. "I'm going to wait here if that is ok," I said, knowing that it probably would be the safest.

"That's fine. I'll see you around Ellis," he said then walked off.

I rested my back against the wall and pulled out my phone to distract myself, hoping Callum would come soon since I didn't know how much more of the night I could do. My legs could barely hold myself up at this moment.

As if on que the door opened and Callum walked in with a smile on his face.

"Hi," I said as I hugged him.

He hugged me back tightly, not wanting to let me go. "Hey."

I pulled out of the embrace and saw bright pink lipstick on his cheek. I frowned at it, knowing that wasn't mine. "Some girl kissed you?"

He quickly rubbed his cheek with a frown, not wanting me to see that. "She was a little too friendly." He looked embarrassed and guilty at the same time.

Paulo's words rang in my mind again, 'Callum's a player'. I didn't notice it until now. But girls flocked to him as if he was made of candy. "Does that happen often?"

"Like every time," one of his bandmates chuckled as they walked through the back door with their guitar in hand.

Callum shot him a look. But it was too late, I already heard it. I felt jealous of the girl that kissed him. Those girls had no right to do that because Callum was mine. I wonder if Callum was looking for this kind of attention. Was that why he stayed to greet the fans? None of his other band mates stayed around for that. "Was she pretty?"

Callum sighed as he looked at me. "El, trust me, those girls don't matter. You're the only one that does," he said as he held my hands. He looked around the hall and saw his bandmates packing up. There was no privacy there.

With another sigh, he led me through the hall until we were in the back alley of the concert venue. He closed the door behind him, locking us out of prying eyes then looked at me, reading me.

I didn't want to trust him, however, his eyes said that he was telling the truth. I nodded finally, believing him. "That was such an amazing performance. You were made for the stage," I said, already changing the topic.

He smiled lightly as he zipped up his leather coat. "Want to get out of here?" he asked, desire playing in his eyes.

He wanted me to spend the night with him, but I couldn't. My parents were already waiting for me at home. They thought I was studying and I had to get back to Cami. "I can't."

He nodded with disappointment. "I understand," he said simply as he looked at the water that was frozen in the pothole, rubbing his shoe over it hesitantly, as if he would fall into it.

These past few days, I noticed him more distracted than normal. He was hiding more secrets from me and he wasn't acting like himself. Something was on his mind, but he hadn't told me what it was. I was a little hurt that he hadn't opened up to me about it yet. I sighed. "You never told me why you are terrified of the ice." I said as I remembered that moment we shared. That was only weeks ago, but so much had happened since that time. It felt like too long ago.

I felt like he knew almost everything about me. He knew my secrets and my fears all in a matter of a few weeks because I couldn't stop being an open book with him. But when I looked at him, he was still a book with missing pages or half filled with half-made sentences. He shared nothing of meaning, and it was frustrating.

He shoved his hands into his pockets and blew out hot steam from his mouth. He didn't feel comfortable sharing it with me. But I was getting tired of waiting. How long did we have to be dating until I knew him, all of him? He looked around the alleyway as if someone would hear us talk. "This isn't the best time to talk about it."

He was letting me down. "Ok." I wouldn't lie that Callum and I came from completely different backgrounds. Sometimes we didn't see eye to eye, but we were working on it. I was trying so hard to understand him.

"You have that doctor's appointment tomorrow, right?" Callum asked, changing the topic.

I rather not be reminded of that. Out of any topic to change to, why this? I nodded in silence.

"I talked to your mom, she's going to let me pick you up from the hospital tomorrow afterwards."

"Cool," I said, suddenly my mood killed.

"Well, I think Cami has waited enough. Let's get you back to her., he said as he grabbed my hand lightly and guided me to her car.
