twenty; jacket
"Mr. H, I need help!"
Scott turned slightly to his left, and quickly made eye contact with the girl that had been calling his name. He smiled at the blonde-haired girl, then strode over to her.
"Can you ask nicely?" He questioned as he went down on one knee in front of her.
"Can you please tie my boots?" Scott glanced down at her boots and noticed the laces, still undone and flung to the sides.
"I thought you knew how to tie them?"
"I do!" The girl insisted. "But I couldn't get 'em today." Scott smiled again as he swiftly tied them, singing the saying he had been teaching his kindergarten class.
"Thank you!" She said once Scott had finished them. She quickly grabbed her backpack from the ground, then went running down the busy school hallway. Scott watched her for a brief moment before returning his attention to the remainder of his class, his eyes falling on one kid in particular.
"Do you need help, Izzy?" He asked, walking up to a small, brunette girl. She looked up from her jacket, then sheepishly nodded her head.
"I've been prac'icing, but its hard," she spoke as Scott knelt down next her. He grabbed her jacket, then quickly zipped it up.
"Thank you," she spoke once he stood back up. She grabbed her backpack, then walked towards the nearest doors that led outside. Once she was out of sight, Scott supervised the few remaining kids, then watched as they all eventually ran off. He was about to head back to his classroom when he turned and saw Izzy back inside.
"Hey, Izzy. What's wrong?"
"My dad's not here yet."
Scott didn't even need to see her face to tell that she was sad, and it only took him a second to come up with a solution.
"What if I go get my jacket and we play outside until he gets here?" Her face instantly lit up, and she was instantly nodding her head, and that's all it took to get Scott moving.
Within a couple of minutes, the two were outside. Scott watched intently as Izzy raced around the playground, and would give her reassuring smiles if she glanced his way. After a while, Scott's gaze began wandering to other parts of his surroundings. However, his attention snapped back to the girl as he heard the loud cry of "Dad!" come out of her mouth. Before he knew it, Izzy was racing past Scott. By the time he fully turned to look behind himself, Izzy was hugging a dark-haired man who was knelt down on the ground.
"I'm sorry I'm late, sweetie," Scott heard the man say in a higher tone.
"S'okay."
"How 'bout this," he said, pulling away from her. "Because I was late, I'll let you keep playing for a couple more minutes." Scott could practically hear her gasp.
"Thank you, dad!" She said before running past Scott once more. He watched her for a brief second before looking back to the man. Scott took in his face as he began walking towards Scott, and he instantly noted just how similar the two looked.
"You're her father?" Scott finally asked as he noticed the man's eyes on him. He nodded his head, then extended his hand.
"Mitch Grassi." Scott quickly shook his hand.
"Scott Hoying, her teacher."
"Thank you for staying with her."
"It'd be terrible for me to not." Mitch barely nodded his head. "She's an angel anyway. It was no problem."
"She's an angel?" He asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Mhm. You've taught her well." Mitch just barely smirked before turning his attention back to his daughter.
"I'm glad to hear that."
"The only thing is..." Mitch turned back to Scott. "She needs to practice zipping up her jacket." His smirk turned into a wide smile.
"I think I can do that."
