ptx; dads of ptx q&a

*Scott, Kevin, Matt, Avi, and Darien do a fun Q&A! Thank you to avm2103 for submitting the questions! Send suggestions on what you wanna see! Love • Bree 💙*

The dad of the three time Grammy winning acapella group Pentatonix have decided to sit down and be interviewed by us today! So without further ado, let's welcome the Dads of Pentatonix!

Scott Hoying is married to the counter tenor of Pentatonix and husband of fourteen years, Mitch Grassi-Hoying. They have six children together!

Kevin Olusola is married to his wife of eight years, Tara Olusola. They have four children together!

Matt Sallee is married to his high school sweetheart, Grace Sallee. They have four children together!

Darien Koop is married to Pentatonix's tour manager, Esther Koop. They have five children together!

Avi Kaplan is married to his wife of five years, Kate Kaplan. They have eight children together!

Welcome! Thank you so much for talking with us today!

Scott: "Hello! I can't wait to do this interview, these are really fun to do!"

Kevin: "Thank you for doing this! The mom interview was really nice!"

Matt: "Hey! This is my first dad interview so this is going to be really cool!"

Avi: "Hi! No time no see! I haven't done an interview since I decided to leave Pentatonix. I'm so grateful to still have these guys as best friends!"

Darien: "Thanks for having us today! I rarely do interviews but Esther said they are fun to do, so I am here."

• How do you manage your jobs with your family?

Darien: "Esther and I set a day that we don't do any work. It's usually a Saturday or a Sunday. But during the summer we picked two days that we don't work. When we aren't working we wanna focus on the kids and just them."

Scott: "Mitch and I work when the kids are in school or in bed! But since Amelia is still at home with us, we mostly do work at night. But sometimes the kids can keep each other occupied so we can get some work done as well!"

Matt: "Usually I don't do a lot of work when home! Except I always answer emails which doesn't take me long! Sorry Esther I don't work a lot when we are off tours!" *laughs*

Avi: "I plan my work and recording music schedule around what the kids and Kate's schedule is. I wanna be there as much as I can for the kids and for Kate!"

Kevin: "On Sabbath day, we have a family day. We go to church and then spend time the rest of the day together as a family. My family really loves church so that's important for us."

• This question is for Scott. How do you deal with hate for being in a same sex relationship? And how is it raising an openly gay son?

Scott: "I just ignore all of the negative people really! At the end of the day, their negativity and hate doesn't effect Mitch and I and it doesn't matter to us. Our goal in parenting and I think all of the rest of the PTX dads can agree with this, is that we want all of our children to be open minded, respectful, humble, kind and independent. My kids are very open minded to any type of person, whether they are gay, bi, pan, asexual, religious, non-religious, disabled, whatever the case is. My children don't judge you on little things like that, they base their opinions of you on your character and how you conduct yourself. The comments that piss Mitch off the most are when people say two men or two women can't raise a kid correctly. We actually get a lot of compliments from our children's teachers on how respectful and kind our children are. And for raising an openly gay son, it's just like raising the rest of the kids! We don't discipline Hudson any differently! Hudson is sassy just like Mitch and he loves to wear nail polish and some makeup. But since Mitch and I are both openly gay ourselves, we understand all of the struggles and triumphs you go through as an openly gay person! Hudson is only nine years old, so he hasn't experienced a lot of hate just yet. I hope he doesn't experience any hate in his life but I'm sure he will."

• How do you keep the romance alive with kids?

Matt: "FaceTiming a lot! Grace loves to talk so when I'm on tour we usually FaceTime for hours on end! And I usually send Grace flowers or edible arrangements to make her feel very special."

Darien: "Esther and I both work at home for most of the year, so we keep our romance spicy during that time of year. When she goes on tour with Pentatonix, we FaceTime a lot and sometimes I take the kids to the shows to visit."

Kevin: "I always love to spoil Tara because she works very hard. She works part time and watches the kids while I'm living my dream as a musician."

Scott: "Have sex on tour!" *busts out laughing* "But seriously we probably have the most sex during tour when we are in our hotel rooms. Since our kids are older they know what sex is, well our two older boys do anyway. We don't wanna scar our kids for life by them walking in on us doing it." *laughs*

Avi: "Kate's family lives in the United States now and they love to take the kids to spend the night at their house, so that's when Kate and I have our alone time. My parents also take the kids for fun trips as well."

• What's the best thing about being a father?

Avi: "Creating fun filled memories with the kids. I remember doing things I did as a child and now I get to do those same things with them!

Darien: "Just the unconditional love. The morning wake up calls and the kisses."

Scott: "Spoiling the kids rotten!" *laughs*

Kevin: "Talking to the kids their accomplishments and how excited they were about it. Makes everything so pure."

Matt: "Teaching the kids new things and seeing their faces light up!"

• What advices would you give to new dads?

Kevin: "To remain calm and collective. Yelling doesn't solve anything. If you are having a rough day, try to find an activity to help you calm down."

Darien: "To be completely honest with your kids. Because your kids will hate you when they are older of you lie about little things."'

Avi: "Expose your child to the world around them. Don't shelter them."

Matt: "My piece of advice would be to let your kids explore the world! Whether it's religion, art, music, whatever it is. Let the kids find themselves."

Scott: "To have fun! You don't have to be serious all of the time. Your kids are only kids once, so have fun and plan fun things!"

Let's play this or that!

• Eggs or Pancakes? •

Scott: "Pancakes all the way! IHOP pancakes are my absolute favorite but also Mitchy's pancakes are a favorite of mine too!"

Kevin: "I really love eggs!"

Matt: "Pancakes! I can eat pancakes all day if I was allowed!" *laughs*

Avi: "Eggs. Kate makes the best eggs! She can make them like five different ways and each way they are delicious!"

Darien: "Eggs all the way! Esther makes the best egg sandwiches and omelettes."

• Wallet or Money Clip? •

Kevin: "Wallet! Tara always buys me these durable wallets and they survive

Matt: "I use a wallet and when we go out Grave holds it for me because I've lost my wallets so many times!"

Avi: "I usually use a money clip but Kate really really hates it." *laughs*

Darien: "I use a wallet! I only use a money clip if I know I'm not going to a billion places. Like if I'm going to the pumpkin patch I bring a money clip."

Scott: "A Wallet! Mitch always takes it from me because I have a tendency to loose it!" *laughs*

• Hot Dogs or Hamburgers? •

Matt: "I love having hamburgers! In-N-Out burgers are my all time favorite hamburgers!"

Avi: "Both! I grill both hot dogs and hamburgers all of the time and I eat them both!"

Scott: "Hamburgers! Cheeseburgers actually. Like Matt said, In-N-Out burgers are amazing! Mitchy doesn't like hot dogs but the kids and I do!"

Darien: "I love hotdogs that are on the grill!"

Kevin: "I'm going to say hamburgers!"

• Christmas or Halloween? •

Avi: "Hanukkah is my favorite holiday! I celebrated both Christmas and Hanukkah as a child. But my wife loves Christmas! She goes a tad overboard! And Halloween is fun too!"

Scott: "UGH don't make me choose! I love both Halloween and Christmas!"

Darien: "This really hard! I love them both! But Halloween is special because that's Annabelle's birthday!"

Matt: "I really love Halloween because we get to dress up in fun costumes and eat candy! But Christmas is amazing because it's family time!"

Kevin: "Christmas is my favorite holiday because we are celebrating the son of God. The kids love Halloween because of dressing up and candy." *laughs*

• Car or Truck? •

Matt: "A car! Actually a SUV now because Grace and I have four kids and four kids can't fit into a small car!"

Darien: "I love having a truck but I don't use mine much because all of the kids can't fit. But if I'm just taking a few kids out it works out."

Avi: "Mini van! Since I have a tribe of kids now." *laughs*

Kevin: "A car! My wife's car can fit all of us perfectly! Even fits the cat!" *laughs*

Scott: "My mini van!" *laughs* "Mitch and I also have a mini van. We could have gotten a smaller car but we always pick up other kids so a mini van works out better!"

Thank you all so much for this interview today! It was wonderful and fun to get to know all of you!

Scott: "Thank you for having us! That was really fun!"

Kevin: "Thank you for this fun experience! I enjoyed myself!"

Matt: "Thank you! I survived my first dad interview!" *giggles*

Avi: "Thank you for having me! I am blessed to be still included with these guys!"

Darien: "Thank you! I really enjoyed doing this!"
