Chapter 25:
Lexi quivers in fear as she watches the doctor saunter over to Re first, as she was the closest to him, and uncaps a bottle of water when he's standing in front of her. He harshly grabs onto her chin and tilts it up, pouring the contents of the bottle directly onto her mouth.
Re, being the stubborn person she is, refuses to open her mouth, instead clenching her teeth down so the water spills all around her mouth and clothes. This must frustrate the doctor because he simply tightens his grip around her mouth so she screams out in pain, effectively opening her mouth and pouring the water in.
Re glares at him when he's done and he walks over to Lexi next. "You must be thirsty after the intake of all of those tranquillisers." He smirks as grabs a hold of Lexi's chin too, tilting her head back so it rests slightly on Caleb's back.
Lexi willingly opens her mouth because she is indeed thirsty. Riverfield pours the water messily down her throat and though it goes everywhere, Lexi can't bring herself to care when it's quenches her thirst in the best way.
She gulps it down quickly, choking a little at then end and sees Riverfield walks a few steps behind her to Caleb. She sees him pull a pot out of his pocket and get what looks like some pills out of it.
Lexi can feel Caleb's posture stiffen and she knows his head is bent down, looking at the floor instead of Riverfield. He tenses instantly when she feels Riverfield grab the locks on his head to force him to face up and she doesn't know if it was intentional but his bound hands feel around for hers until they're found and grasps into one of them tightly when Riverfield tilts his head further back.
She doesn't want to let him, but she her body seems to lack movement and lets him hold her instead of snatching her hand away from his grasp.
"Open your mouth." Riverfield seethes at Caleb.
The way he talks to him. It's like he's disgusted with Caleb. The pure hatred seeps through his voice and into his words when he utters the words directed to him and it's clear he loathes him.
Lexi senses that maybe Caleb doesn't comply with Riverfields demands because she turns her head slightly to see him grab his mouth harshly just as he did with Lexi and Re. But Caleb struggles more than the both of them combined, like he really didn't want to take the pills. Lexi wanders what they're even for until her question is answered almost instantly after she thinks it.
"If you don't take your anti-psychotics, how am I meant to torture you?" Dr Riverfield bellows causing Lexi to jump in fright. She had never heard him speak in such a manner before. It was terrifying. "I need you sane for this!"
And that's when Lexi understands why exactly Caleb seems different now. Like he was back to how he was back at the sanatorium.
"Why do you need him sane to torture him?" Lexi asks, bravely. "Why are you even torturing him?"
Riverfield's scowl slowly disappears when his gaze moves across to hers from Caleb. He smirks instead, letting go of Caleb and walking back so he's in front of her instead- bending down slightly so he's eye level with her.
"You always were quite curious, weren't you Miss Reid?" He asks, tilting his head at her as his smirk slowly disappears too. "It quickly became one of your most aggravating traits." He says scowling again, leaning further into her to showcase a threatening tone of voice.
Lexi can't help herself. She's on the brink of death and still she itches to have her questions answered because she just can't stand not knowing. She's going insane because none of this is making sense to her. "Are you going to kill us? Because we know that you've tortured him?"
Riverfield simply nods and she swears she sees a glint in his eye. He doesn't seem crazy. Not like Caleb does. But riverfields actions prove that he's just as bad. The wicked nod alone should've been enough to shut her up, but still she continues. "Are you going to kill him too?"
Riverfield is silent, eyes narrowed to a glare. She can feel Caleb's hands gripping onto hers again and squeezing it in warning. He's silently telling her to stop but again, she's relentless.
"Why do you despise him so much?" Lexi knows now it's better to keep quiet around him. He's dangerous, that's for sure. And her tenaciousness to know everything wasn't worth getting killed for. But she can't help herself ask one more question because she just has to know.
And that's when Riverfield snaps. "Because he's an abomination!" He roars, right in her face making her jump in fright. "He's vile, disturbing and just looking at him makes me feel sick!"
Riverfield is inches away from her face, you're anger radiating off of him, animosity seeping through his eyes and boring into Lexis. "Why, because he's killed people?" She whispers so soft that she wonders if she even said it aloud. "Because that wasn't his fault. He's is clinically insane and entirely psychotic. And who could blame him with the past he has had." Lexi says bravely, remembering the scars on Caleb's body.
She almost tears up but notices Riverfield eyes widen ever so slightly at her words. "If only you knew what he has been through." She whispers, confusing even herself with the words that hurdle out of her mouth. Why is she defending the man that tried to kill her merely a few days ago.
She's so scared, she doesn't even realise her hands are laced with Caleb's large ones, softly rubbing his thumb soothingly across the base of her hand- even in a situation like this. It's most probably a warning to stop questioning the doctor but Lexi takes it as more of a comforting gesture. His touch calms her down completely.
"Oh I know more than you might think." Riverfield smirks, walking back over to Caleb and grabbing him by the chin again, forcing his mouth open. He puts some pills in his mouth before having them spat back in his face as Caleb glares at him though Lexi can't see a single glimpse of their interaction- only the pills that fall to the floor.
Riverfield holds a tight grip around the knife that's lodged into his leg and yanks it out quickly and effortlessly, like he's skilled in the art of stabbing. "Arghhh!" Caleb groans in pain, although certainly not as loudly as one might have expected- he seems so used to the pain.
He unwillingly tightens his grip around Alexa's hand. "Stop! What are you doing?" She asks, unable to see what's going on. She truly fears for Caleb's life and hates being in the vulnerable positions she's currently in, not being able to do anything at all to stop it all from happening.
Riverfield comes into view again and sees a dagger like knife held in his hand with fresh blood dripping from it. Lexi lets out a few shaky breaths when she realises that her big mouth had yet again, gotten her into trouble. "Want to have a go?" He asks, smirking at her whilst holding the knife up to her cheek.
The metal feels cold against her face and her shaky breaths turn into deeper and harsher one and its like she's hyperventilating all over again. Lexi eyes avert to her right to see Re looking at her in pure fear and helplessness. Tears are threatening to spill from her friends eyes but she doesn't say anything so she just squeezes her eyes shut up tightens her own grip around Caleb's hand.
She feels the metal pierce into the skin of her cheek and cries out in pain instantly. "You want to kill me, or torture me? Whatever it is, get on with it because I'm getting bored." Lexi hears Caleb say behind her, in the most casual way.
The knife is removed from her cheek and though it's still hurts, it fades a little ensuring her that the cut hopefully wasn't too deep.
Riverfield immediately rushes back over to Caleb's side and hand the knife back into his right leg, making sure to twist it this time before leaving it there. Caleb screams out in pain and Lexi can't help but feel guilty. It should've been her. He's been through enough already.
"Take the pills!" Riverfield seethes at Caleb, to which he nods. Anything to make him go away again. Riverfield pulls out the pill bottle again and gets them out, shoving them in Caleb's mouth and doesn't bother giving him any water to wash it down with.
Taking a few steps toward him, Lexi oblivious to what's going on, Riverfield's hand swiftly punches Caleb right in the mouth once causing Caleb to grown aloud once more before turning around and leaving the barnhouse.
Re watches in terror and Lexi feels the weight of Caleb's head resting atop hers but she can't bring herself to stop it from happening. She crying now and clutches Caleb's hand like her life depends on it. "Why is he doing this?" Lexi sobs.
Caleb lets out a shaky breath before answering the burning question with a throaty groan, as if it pains him to simply talk. "Because it's him." He whispers reluctantly making Re and Lexi frown. "That wasn't Riverfield, Alexa. That's Marcus."
