Reader POV

My father was more than pleased to hear I had made my choice.

"Are you sure you will marry Fushiguro Megumi?" He asked me as we walked near the leaders of the three largest and strongest clans. "This is a huge decision, my little flower."

"I know, Father. But I know Megumi more than I know the others. And Megumi is a kind soul."

"I see. A wise choice then."

Father was about to announce that I had made my choice when there was a scream.

"SOMEONE GET AN AMBULENCE!!! SHE'S BEEN POISONED!"

And just like that, my world began to fall apart.

Everything was hazy as my father went into the ambulence with my mother, my siblings and I rushing towards the nearest hospital.

My siblings were all worried about my mother, but I knew she was done for.

My mother had already been weak and it was only a matter of time before she would be gone.

I just wished it hadn't been so soon.

My father came out a few minutes later, his (e/c) eyes dull. "Children. Your mother wishes to speak with you."

My siblings went ahead of me, me following more slowly.

The beeping of the heart monitor proved my mother was alive, but only just.

"Mother?" Kei got on his knees and took her hand.

"My dear children," she said faintly. "I've not much time, but I want you to know I have many regrets. I've done things in the past that I am ashamed of, but I never once regretted giving birth to you. I love you all so much. You all give your father and I so much pride every time we see you."

Mizuki and I got on either side of Kei, all our eyes watering.

"Save your strength," Mizuki whispered when my mother reached her hand to me.

"I'm dying, sweet child. I want all of you to take care of each other. And your families. Remember this: the brightest flame can burn out, but will rise again from the embers. You are the embers."

She looked at the two others. "You two may leave. I've said all I can to you. I love you so much, you hear me? Let your brother know."

They nodded and Kei helped Mizuki out of the room, the door closing behind them.

"My greatest pride," Mother caressed my cheek as I moved closer to her. "True you are not my oldest child, but your spirit outshines your siblings. You remind me of my brother Luke. You even have his  facial expressions. I suppose it's genetics. But that's not what I wanted to tell you."

She kissed my forehead gently. "I wanted to tell you how much you will have to sacrifice. You may love someone, but what is the price of being with that person? Darling, make sure you don't have to change to be with that person. Your fire burns so bright. Don't let anyone regardless of who they are stomp it out."

"Mother, I know what you are saying. But I didn't choose Zenin Naoya. Remember Fushiguro Megumi? I chose him."

"Megumi?" Mother smiled and leaned back against the pillows, a satisfied sigh leaving her. "Then I can die in peace. Go well, my daughter. Bring honor to our family and clan. I love you."

And she waved her hand and I was escorted out of the room into the hallway where my siblings were.

About five minutes later, she was dead.

My father's cold (e/c) eyes were dull, lacking any emotions other than pure anguish.

The ride back to the venue the next morning was quiet and my father didn't join us for making the official statement that my mother died.

"You will deliver the news to the clans," Father said to me in a hoarse voice before I left with my siblings.

"Why not you?" I asked. "You're the head of the clan-and the family."

He shook his head with distraught. "I've lost my wife and best friend, my sweet flower. Isn't that enough?"

"Father, I don't-"

"Listen to me now," he said with a fierce glow in his eyes. "You will take my place as the clan's leader. You are now the head of the family."

"But Father, I'm not ready!"

"It wasn't a statement to respond," he said as he placed his hands on my shoulders, me looking up at him. "And you were born ready, (y/n). Your mother was right: you're our greatest pride. Take your place in the world, my dear."

"I am an old man. My mind and actions aren't as sharp as they once were, (y/n). It's time for a new start. For all of us."

As such, as the next head of the Tsukishima clan, I was responsible for giving the clans the news of my mother's passing.

People offered us their condolences.

"She may have been born in France, but she was a fierce soul," Naobito admitted as he bowed in respects to me.

"May she find endless peace wherever she may be," Naoya muttered with sympathy in his usually rude attitude and body language.

Everyone gave my siblings and I apologies and well-wishes, but I didn't care.

Megumi spotted me and rushed up to me and hugged me. "I'm so sorry, (y/n)."

"I am too." I pushed him away, violence in my eyes. "My father was foolish to trust the clans wouldn't try something. But not again."

I looked up at Megumi. "The marriage is still on as it was one of my mother's dying wishes for me to marry. But as for the rest of the clans? It's an endless sea of blood, Megumi. I'm tired of it. And the stigma."

At my mother's funeral, only the heads of the clans and close friends came, as well as my family.

Akiteru was a mess, as were my other siblings.

I remained quiet alongside my father.

But even he was a mess inside.

As I watched the funeral people bury my mother's body next to her siblings and parents and the rest of the Bourbon family-as she was a descendant of the royal dynasty.

Hence why my siblings and I were also unofficial royalty.

As such, some sorta-distant cousins from eastern Europe (including royalty) came and gave their respects.

I had known my mother telling me stories of our ancestors from long ago and how they lived in beautiful castles and wore beautiful clothing, but I didn't think she was serious until now.

Megumi tried to be near me for the funeral, but I stayed away from him.

I had only agreed to marry him as I had no other options that were suitable and I was forced to marry someone of the three great clans.

Naoya gave me sympathetic glances and ended up walking me back to my mother's ancestral home, Chateau Bourbon.

"You know I lost my mother too," he said to me as we walked underneath his umbrella as it was snowing.

I looked up at him and he nodded, a saddened look in his expression.

I had known he had older brothers and a mother who died somewhere in Austria when he was young, but I didn't know much about that.

"I was four when she was stabbed to death," he said quietly. "My brothers had tried to protect her, but they weren't able to. They were stabbed right before her. I remember my mother hiding me in the cabinet behind her in a box. I had seen her be slaughtered by some idiots who wanted revenge over some bullshit."

"They sold her fucking organs on the black market and got money to fund their stupid getaway. Otherwise my family would've torn them apart," Naoya explained. "But I understand what you're going through. Yeah I'm an asshole, but even assholes like me have feelings."

"I loved my mother very much," he said. "And she loved my brothers and I very much in return. I remember as a child I would show her drawings and she'd frame every single one of them. But as I got older, I realized how much she meant."

"At the time I thought she and my brothers were weak for allowing themselves to be killed. But they did it to save me. Had it not been for them, I wouldn't be standing here right now to annoy you. Have hope, (y/n). You'll get through it. We all do."

Naoya opened the door to the chateau and waved goodbye to me. "Oh, and if you tell anyone about what I just told you? You'll regret it. Got it, head of the Tsukishima clan?"

I offered him a weak smile. "Yeah. Thank you, Naoya."

He nodded and set off back to the hotel he was staying at while I watched him go.

Maybe he's not all bad. But I still should be on guard in case something happens.
