Faulty Minds

Tobert was a good kid, a little 'gifted' as they say to his face or retarded as they say behind his back, but he never meant any harm. He lived with his grandma for thirty years and she'd always been a little forgetful, but lately it had gotten worse. It had gotten to the point that any rational person would have known that she suffered from dementia.

At first she forgot the cats name. Tobert thought this was strange as she loved that cat, but it was just a cat after all. Then, she forgot his name. She started calling him uncle Billy. This was also strange, but Tobert was often told he looks like his late uncle Billy.

When she started dressing for winter in the middle of July and shitting the bed, Tobert would have to change her. In her mind, the weirdo with one bulbous green eye would strip her naked every now and then. Of course, she would forget why and the thoughts that led to were anything but comfortable.

So she devised a plan as she lay in bed one night having nearly forgotten how to move and reeling from an untreated arm infection. She clutched the broken leg of a nightstand in her feeble grasp. She wasn't quite sure how she had acquired it, or that it would kill the weirdo. She didn't want him dead though. She was just conscious enough to know that maybe he didn't deserve death, but that eye needed to go.

Tobert came through the bedroom door with a clean change of clothing and a fresh diaper. The fool thought nothing of the stake in her hands. He stood completely still as she sat upright and brought the jagged wood into the bulbous eye!

Tobert finally reacted in a manner as brutal as you would expect from a heavily confused individual with a stake in their eye. He pummeled the old lady with both hands at least three times. Until she seemed to stop breathing. Except, no one ever taught Tobert how to check a pulse.

He did what any good grandson would have done after murdering his grandma and gave her a proper burial. When he heard the screams an hour later he knew it was the ghost of Grams telling him to feed the cat and that diaper wasn't wet. It had never occurred to him that she could still be alive in that cardboard coffin.
