Patrick arrived at his shared room after all the chaos. He was exhausted for the day and had about 45 minutes to himself. Pete was at his group therapy session and Patrick was clear for the next two hours.
Patrick sat down on his bed. He took out Melanie's switchblade from his pocket. He decided to put it on Pete's bed so that he could give it to her later.
As he was walking away, something fell off of the bed and landed on his foot. It was not too heavy, but fell with enough force to make Patrick wince.
"what the hell?" Patrick asked, Picking up the object. It was a book. Petes black book to be exact!
The book was already opened to a page when it fell. Patrick was about to put it back on the bed and walk away, but something pulled him in.
It may have been the neat and smooth handwriting or maybe all the full pages, but something made Patrick want to open the book and read it.
Patrick shook his head. he couldn't betray Pete like that. especially when they had somewhat of a good thing going.
On the other hand, he let Brendon and Melanie read it. he must only let his friends read it.
Pete and Patrick are friends, right?
Patrick applied this logic and said screw it!
he opened the book to the first page. The handwriting was messy and some things were misspelled. It must've been from a while ago
The page was titled 'XO' The lyrics were brave for a 12 year old to write. (before you come at me, Pete had this book since he was six but had nothing to do with it. he didn't write in it until he was 12. got it? great!)
Patrick flipped the pages. The songs were so good!
Patrick decided to close the book, before his eyes caught a specific page 'miss missing you'
he decided to only read the beginning.
'don't panic. no not yet, I know I'm the one you want to forget. kill all the love, to weave my heart, its time for me to fall apart. Now you're gone but I'll be okay. your hot whiskey eyes have fanned the flame. Maybe I'll burn a little brighter tonight. Let the fire breathe me back to life'
The rest of the lyrics were beautiful.
Patrick never realized how long he was reading, because the sound of footsteps started to get closer to the door.
He quickly put the book under Pete's pillow and stiffened up.
Pete walked into the room and saw Patrick looking stressed and stiff. "hey Patrick" He said, moving to sit on his bed.
Patrick flinched a bit. "h-hey Pete" he stuttered.
Pete smiled a bit concerned still.
"hey, why are you so...jumpy?" Pete asked, going over to sit on his bed.
Patrick just sat down and played with the hem of his shirt. "I- I'm not jumpy" he said, trying to make it sound legit.
Pete just shrugged. "hey, Patrick." he asked nervously. Patrick looked up from his lap and locked eyes with Pete.
"i just wanted to say...Thank you" Pete said with a smile.
Patrick raised an eyebrow at Pete. "for what?" he asked. Pete just shrugged.
"thank you for not reading my book. You had a chance to see the song that I spent the most time on, and poured my heart and soul into, but you didn't. so thank you." he said, smiling at Patrick.
Patrick put on a fake smile even though he was racked with guilt. he had taken something that didn't belong to him and betrayed his roommates trust. He was such an awful person.
"so anyway, I think we got off on the wrong foot, you seem cool" Pete said shyly, playing with the few strands of blonde hair that hung behind his ear.
"you seem cool too." patrick smiled.
he and pete talked until patrick had to leave. Then when he came back, they talked more. Patrick had to hide the guilt that he was feeling and put on a fake smile, to mask the pain.
Well, that's all. Does anyone even read this anymore?
