Chapter Thirteen: Let's Learn Theory
Shane glanced down at his wrist, and was suddenly very glad that the Headmaster had given him a psi-band.
After a second of silence, Professor Seabend launched back into her teaching. Shane banished the uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach, but some grim fear still lingered. He had to focus on the class.
"So let me explain telekinesis," Professor Seabend said with a beam, obviously trying to distract from the room's sombre atmosphere, "with telekinesis, the user can move matter, but today I want to focus specifically on levitating a material. When a Psionic's brain waves are directed at an object, the bonds of the molecules surrounding it are suddenly strengthened, creating a substance that is invisible to the human eye but actually has a semi-solid mass, shape and form. This substance then is pushed under the object, and its mass effectively lifts the object it into the air by pushing it with its pure mass."
"But then what is the point of an Affinity, if we can really manipulate any material?" Grayson asked curiously.
"When someone establishes their Affinity, it is really a matter or preference and compatibility. When they have an Affinity, a Psionic will become far more adept and skilled at manipulating their substance than at any others. This is because they find it naturally easier and more efficient, and so they build up skills relating to the substance of their Affinity."
After the lesson was over, the class thanked the teacher and left the Psionic Science room. As Shane walked with his friends to the Kinesis Training classroom, he was practically bubbling with excitement. He couldn't wait to advance his Electrokinesis, and he hoped that Ava and Fernando would form an Affinity too.
"Hello, class," Mr Stealreaver said.
"Hello, Mr Stealreaver," the students answered in unison, their voices made loud with nerves and excitement.
"Today, we will be split into two groups. One group will try to establish an Affinity, while the others will be advancing the abilities they already have."
Everyone looked eager to begin, either to gain their power for the first time, or to advance their current abilities. And that was when their hopes were all crushed.
"But first, before we begin, we need to learn some theory," Mr Stealreaver declared dramatically.
He handed out a book titled Handbook of all Known Kinesis Abilities.
The other students groaned, but Shane was still interested. He realised that they must have known all of the Psychokinetic powers from their daily life, living in a Psionic-centered world, before they had even come to the Academy. This must have been common knowledge to them.
Shane opened the book and began to read eagerly, devouring every word, flying across the pages with intense interest.
Welcome to this handbook, written by Mason Stealreaver for use in Psionic Academy.
There are a huge amount of abilities that Psionics may receive, some more common than others. There are two main branches of Psionic abilities. Firstly, there is Psychokinesis, the umbrella term for the group of abilities that allow the user to generate and control a particular substance. Secondly, there are the Mental Abilities, powers that focus on the mind, in the realm of thought manipulation and mental attacks.
This handbook focuses on the Psychokinetic powers, and description is given for each of these ability, as well as the Rarity Level and Power Level. The less common an ability is, the higher the Rarity Level, and the more powerful an ability is, the higher the Power Level.
Every Psionic can form an Affinity with a substance, able to generate and control that material. Though they are able to control any substance with Telekinesis, they have much more control and power over the substance they have an Affinity with. Psionics can only use Special Techniques based on the substance they have formed an Affinity with.
