Chapter Sixty: The Back of the Front Lines
Looking back, Juniper Crow now saw that her parents had been crazy. Insane.
But, at the time, she was their victim - she had been prevented from seeing the truth, she had felt like there was no escape.
One day, while her parents were fighting in the kitchen, she snuck out of her home, taking some cash from her mother's wallet.
Slipping out of her house, she took a taxi to Psionic Academy.
She was thrilled and excited, her heart was beating fast.
The exam had been hard, and she had failed.
Crushed, she returned home to find that the household had been under Tribunal child neglect and abuse investigation for weeks. Her parents were arrested for abuse and taken to prison.
She stayed in the wretched home for years, working difficult jobs to eke out a mild existence.
At the age of twenty-three, she was trapped in a broken home, its shadows haunting her, reminding her of her terrible past.
But the Onyx League provided her with a meaning, a purpose... and a way to retaliate against the world that had hurt her so much.
As instructed by an Onyx Officer, she had stepped into a gleaming gray vehicle with a fake number plate.
Juniper was then blindfolded, and she had felt a sharp pain in her neck as she was injected with a knock-out drug.
Then came the darkness.
When she woke, she was in the Onyx League HQ.
She had no idea how long it had taken to get there, or where she was in the world.
Neither would the Onyx Officers who had escorted her.
That very day, they were taken off to a 'meeting' with the Forum.
In reality, they had their recent memories completely wiped... and the security of the Forum's knowledge was once again restored.
Juniper shook the memories from her head, trying to focus on the screens in front of her.
"Mission 3849 beginning in two hours and forty-three minutes," an automated voice reminded her over the intercom.
Juniper sped up. She was nearly finished with her plan anyway. She just had to command the agents to prepare themselves.
"Onyx Agents 67, 4, 52, 7, and 9. You are required to meet at the mission bay. You shall be taking only one vehicle, model 405. Your job will be to provide backup. An SCPD squadron will be coming to disrupt the mission, so your job is to make sure that the objective is maintained until the time is right," she said into her radio, speaking in a clear and emotionless voice.
There was a fluctuating crackle of static from her radio, and then the voice of an Onyx Agent filled the room.
"We have the coordinates, but we don't know the name of the location we are mobilizing towards. What institution will this mission take place in?"
That was understandable. After all, the Onyx League always had a number of missions going on simultaneously - so sometimes it was hard to keep track of the Forum's latest plans.
Juniper scanned her info-screens. She saw her searching eyes reflected in the intense glow.
"The name of the institution you will be entering is..." she paused, reading the text from her data summary.
In the quiet, she could hear the breathing of the agent through the radio.
"... Psionic Academy."
