Chapter Forty: Shattering

Shane was blasted backwards.

There was a burst of pain on his back as he was slammed directly into a solid wall.

Then the world seemed to break apart.

He saw a desk erupt into pieces and collapse in on itself simultaneously. Next to him, a chair spiralled into the air and smashed into a window.

Rapidly, a delicate spider-web of cracks spread across the transparent surface.

It all happened so fast that his mind could barely register the sensory overload.

Then the gleaming metal leg of a destroyed desk was flying straight at him.

It was flipping in a tight circle, moving closer with every deep, thrumming whoosh of motion. Its metallic surface gleamed crazily amid the dark chaos.

Then the leg jolted away from him and crashed into the window.

There was an ear-splitting crack as the glass shattered.

Pandemonium erupted everywhere. Screams and shouts echoed across the room, bouncing off the walls, mixing with the cacophony of destruction.

Shards of gleaming death flew around the room. The fractured pieces of the window seemed to pour from the pane to the ground in a glittering, screeching cascade.

The waterfall of glass blades streamed downwards like a wickedly sharp rapid. Screaming as they scraped together, the sharps embedded themselves in the walls and the carpet.

Shane threw himself out of the path of the glass deluge. He tumbled across the ground, his breath knocked violently from his lungs.

There came a sharp whoosh, the sound of something coming downwards. Something like an arrow, falling after its graceful peak in the sky, plunging back towards earth - a deadly descent.

A heartbeat later, a triangular shard of glass rushed through the air, directly towards Shane.

He tried to avoid the incoming missile, but he couldn't move fast enough.

He felt the sharp object surge past him, the sound whistling in his ear.

At first, he thought that the shard had missed him altogether.

But then a second passed by and a searing pain flashed to life on his temple.

Gritting his teeth, Shane rose painfully to his feet.

Just as he stood, another window shattered.

But this one hadn't been destroyed by a piece of flying detritus.

No... this was purposeful. Intentional.

Somebody had broken the window open from the outside.

The glass fell away from the pane in a similar shining cascade. Then an arm reached through the window.

Shane's heart jumped inside his chest.

The arm was protected by a thick grey suit, and the glass didn't seem to even scratch through the covering.

Then another arm reached through. In one hand three bronze spheres were being held.

They glinted in the sunlight.

And upon their surface was a singular red light.

And it was flashing.

Then the three spheres were dropped inside the common room.

Shane yelped, lurching away from them as they clattered to the floor.

What were they?

Bombs?

Was he about to be ripped into tiny pieces, destroyed by an explosion?

Was this his last day alive?

"Run!" Shane tried to yell, but his throat was sore and stinging and it came out like a strained shriek.

Then the spheres changed.

And the metamorphosis was terrifying.
