Chapter Forty-seven: Revelation

Luciana shut the door of the Psionic Science room behind Shane.

He collapsed on the floor, panting.

"Everybody's here. Let's close the blinds," Ethan said, gesturing to the window. His cheeks were flushed rubescent, and dry dirt dusted his face.

"Why?" Fernando asked.

"So if any Onyx League members wander by on patrol they won't see us! Idiot," Ethan said.

"No, you're the idiot!" Fernando retorted.

"Are you insane? Do you want the Onyx League to find us?" Nyla asked incredulously, eyes boring into Fernando.

"No, we want the blinds open because we don't want them to ambush us!" Luciana yelled.

"Guys, we need to calm down," Liang begged.

"No! They're gonna get us killed!" Nyla said, stabbing her finger in the direction of Luciana and Fernando.

"You're the one who's going to let them creep up on us," Luciana fumed, "we'll be caught without warning if we can't see them coming. We'll be destroyed!"

"I'm going to go with Nyla on this one," Hanako interrupted, "the longer the blinds are up, the larger the chance that they'll see us."

Ava spun on Hanako, launching a desperate rebuttal.

"No, you don't understand! If we cover the window, we'll be taken completely by surprise. It'll be a slaughter," Ava said. She looked tearful.

Grayson had his eyes fixed on a particularly fascinating spot on the floor of the science room.

Shane rose to his feet as Adrian began to voice his opinion.

"There must be more to the Professor's plan," Adrian said, "she can't just be leaving us here! A teacher will come get us soon."

"I wouldn't be so sure about that," Ethan snarled, "you see how badly they've managed everything so far? This is the second time we've been invaded! The second time! It shouldn't have even happen once!"

Nyla moved forward to shut the blind. Fernando stepped in front of her, blocking her path.

"Move out of my way!" she shrieked.

But Fernando stood still, and tensed - as if preparing for a battle.

"Now look what you're doing!" Liang said, "you're fighting. You're fighting! There are people out there searching for us, people that will kill us - or worse - and you're arguing? Over a blind?"

"I agree with Liang," Shane said, "who cares about the stupid blind! We need to be together on this. We can't be divided right now. The only division that matters is the distance between us, and the League members that want to end our lives!"

Shane found himself breathing heavily.

He had been yelling. His shouting words echoed around the room.

The class had fallen silent.

"No, no, no," a voice broke through the quiet - soft, persistent.

"You don't understand. There is a division between us. There must be... but you guys haven't realised it yet."

It was Grayson speaking.

"What... what do you mean?" Nyla asked, and there was a tremor in her tone.

"How do you think so many soldiers got through the Academy's force field?"

"They had a very skilled Psionic with them. Or a whole team of them. They created a hole in the field, and then muted the disturbance so the teachers wouldn't find out," Hanako listed.

"That's wrong. It's impossible," Grayson said.

"What are you talking about?" Luciana said, her voice edged with indignant confusion.

"I researched it, two days ago. There is a way to penetrate a force field. That's possible. But... but covering up the penetration of a force field, let alone one this powerful... that's simply not capable of occuring from the outside. The pressure that covers the outside layer of the force field prevents it from being penetrated without detection," Grayson explained, "relating to the physics of the force field, it's impossible for them to have opened it from the outside without the teachers finding out."

"No," Ava said, realising what it meant if Grayson was speaking the truth.

"That's wrong," she said, "you have the wrong information, the wrong data."

"No, it's true. And you know it is," Grayson said. Then he turned to face the entire group.

"But all of you are just too scared to face what that means."

"No, no, no..." Liang was muttering.

"But if a penetration can't be concealed from the outside, then how did the Onyx League get into..." Fernando trailed off. His eyes widened in horror.

"Yes," Grayson said simply.

"Then... then..."

"Then it must have been done from the inside," Grayson finished for him, letting the menacing meaning of that sink in.

"No," Luciana said, shaking her head, disbelieving, "that's wrong."

"You know that it's true, and there's no hiding from the truth..."

Shane inhaled sharply.

His heart was beating faster.

"One of us is a traitor."
