On Display
I had no idea where Fergus was or what he looked like, me and Francine were still in the lounge and I was finished drawing. I showed Francine the finished masterpiece.
"So creative and thoughtful Peggy."
"I'm gonna show it to Campbell and Eddie."
I walked to the radio station and knocked on the door, Campbell opened it.
"Hey Pegs!"
"The drawing is done?"
"Really?"
"Aye."
"Come in, let us have a look!"
He let me in, I gave the drawing to him.
"Holy loony, I never a seen a more realistic drawing of a radio before, nice one Pegs, we can definitely display it!"
"Let me see it," Eddie said.
Campbell passed the drawing to Eddie.
"Wow Peggy, this is amazing! When did you learn to draw like that?"
"I've been drawing since I was six, it's what I do for a living now, last drawing sold for 500 quid."
"I'll pay for it!"
"No, it's free, just a kind gesture."
"No I insist, I'll buy it from you. Will 100 quid do?"
"I insist it's free."
I felt my cheeks rise in temperature.
"You ok, your cheeks look redder than a tomato?" Campbell asked.
"Aye, just take the drawing for free Eddie."
He nodded.
"Aye...thank you Peggy, it'll be displayed in the window for all to see."
"You're welcome."
After Campbell put it on display, another patient saw us through the window and walked towards us.
"Damn you newbie, promote the radio when you can promote bringing the television back!"
"Oi, it ain't her fault!" Campbell said.
"You can turn on the television and watch it on mute with subtitles," Eddie said.
"It doesn't work man!"
"What do you mean it doesn't work?" Campbell asked.
"It won't turn on!"
He slammed his hand on the glass.
"Goddammit!"
He walked away. My cheeks were burning.
"It's alright Pegs."
He patted me on the back but suddenly froze.
"You're wearing the bracelet...'the bracelet,'...ya know..."
"What bracelet?" Eddie asked.
"Suicide watch," I said.
Eddie's eyes widened and he let out a trembling sigh. Campbell gave me a side hug, for someone with bipolar, he's really sweet.
"Ignore what that firestarting bastard says."
"Campbell, can you tell me about Fergus?"
"Yeah, you oughtta meet em, he's somewhere here or out there, he's always escaping and comes right back."
"He's a big guy," Eddie added.
"He'll be here soon? Can't wait."
"Who told you about him?" Campbell asked.
"Francine."
I noticed her motioning for me to come back to the table.
"Speaking of Francine, she wants me."
I walked back to her.
"They really liked it."
"Good, look who just showed up."
I looked in the same direction as she, sitting in a chair across from the television by the bookshelf, reading a book was a man. He had dark skin, dark brown mullet, wearing a light blue thin long sleeved shirt and gray pants.
"Is that?..." I whispered.
She nodded.
"Yep, Fergus."
Suddenly, the radio shut off.
"Aww Christ!" Eddie shouted.
"What's going on?" A female patient asked.
"My prayers have been answered," the patient that yelled at me earlier said.
We gathered around the station watching Eddie and Campbell try to fix it until Fergus walked to them.
"I think I know what the problem is," he said.
"No don't!" Eddie said.
"Just let me have a look," Fergus said calmly.
"He's gonna blow it up," a patient said.
"He's blowing it up!" Another patient said.
"Fergus, Fergus, Fergus!"
Some cheered for the radio to blow, others had faith in Fergus. An orderly named Stuart walked in and restrained Fergus.
"Is he causing you trouble?" Stuart asked.
Eddie shook his head. Fergus was let go and he continued what he was doing. Seconds later, the radio station was back on.
"You're a genius, you're a genius Fergus!"
Campbell talked into the microphone.
"Sorry ladies and gentlemen, we are back on the air and we hope to keep it that way. Our next request is..."
I started walking back to the table and sat with Francine satisfied.
"At least I seen Fergus," I said to myself.
I looked over to the station to see Eddie and Fergus exchanging smiles.
