we're being summoned.
"DO YOU KNOW what this is?" Zelda questions the next day as Selene and Sabrina walk into the kitchen to find Zelda, Hilda, and Ambrose waiting for them. The girls had gone to school like always, but it had seemed weird. Selene felt like hell all day, and couldn't focus on any of her schoolwork. She knows there will be consequences for what happened last night, and not knowing what they are terrify her. "I'll tell you. It's an Infernal Summons."
"A what now?" Sabrina asks in confusion as Selene walks over to the eldest Spellman and plucks the letter out of her hand. Selene curses under her breath as she reads the letter, knowing her father is going to try to punish the whole Spellman family.
"Oh, God," Selene's eyes widen as she turns to Sabrina. "They're trying to charge you with Breach of Promise."
"You made a promise to sign the Dark Lord's Book of the Beast and then, when you ran in horror from your dark baptism, you broke it," Zelda yells angrily at her niece. "You humiliated our master in front of the entire coven, and now, you will be judged and tried in front of the entire coven. Never, in all my years, has a Spellman been summoned to the Court of Witches."
"I don't understand," Sabrina shakes her head, grabbing the page from Selene and scanning over it. "Someone is suing me?"
"The Dark Lord," Hilda answer's quietly. "He's determines to get you on the Path of Night."
"I saw him today, the Dark Lord," Sabrina admits, gaining Selene's attention. Sabrina has never told her this. "He took possession of Principal Hawthorne and threatened me."
"Can you imagine how enraged he must be?" Zelda scoffs. "I-"
"Well, it doesn't matter," Sabrina cuts her aunt off. "I don't want to be a part of his coven, I don't want to step foot in the Academy of Unseen Arts, and I am certainly not gonna stand trial."
At this, Selene sighs, having been the only one of the two who read the full letter. "Sabrina, you have to stand trial, because if you don't, you could face the death sentence. So could Hilda, Zelda, and me... We're all on trial."
"But that doesn't make any sense," Sabrina retorts, confused.
"Well, me and Zelda are your legal guardians, lamb," Hilda sighs, before looking at Selene. "And Selene's always been here to protect you. So, in the eyes of the Court of the Witches, your actions are our actions. We're as guilty as you."
"Don't you mean innocent?" Sabrina scoffs, unaware that the Court of Witches has different beliefs than mortal courts. "Innocent until proven guilty?"
"That's mortal law," Ambrose speaks up somberly. "Witch law is the complete opposite. Guilty until proven innocent."
Zelda then holds up a bloody tooth. "Sabrina, do you know what this is? It's your Aunt Hilda's tooth. We have been stripped of our powers. Which means that we will age and rot, rapidly, until a verdict is reached. Your trial begins at midnight."
——
Selene tried her best to find her father before the trail, but he had been purposefully ignoring her. So now, Selene finds herself walking towards the Church of Night with Sabrina, Hilda, and Zelda. All four of the women anxiously await their fate, not knowing what'll happen at the trial.
As soon as the group enters the church, everybody stares at them. Faustus stands at the front of the church, and as soon as Selene, Sabrina, Hilda, and Zelda take their seats, he starts talking. "We, the profane, gather here tonight in this sacrilegious Court to serve the Dark Lord's justice. A deplorable crime has been committed against our master and savior. Sabrina Spellman stands accused before The Infernal Three, guilty of breaking her promise, her pledge, to the Dark Lord."
"Sabrina Spellman, stand," The Infernal Three demand, and after a moment, Sabrina does as told.
"When the accused is confirmed guilty, not only will she abandon her mortal life immediately, but, upon her death, she shall burn for three hundred and thirty three years in the Pit, as his pleasure demands," Faustus declares. The crowd begins to cheer, but Selene can't seem to take her eyes off of Sabrina, wondering if there's any way she could save the Spellman girl. "Accused, how plead you?"
"I... I," Sabrina begins, not sure what to say. The door to the church then flies open to reveal an old, mortal man.
"She pleads not guilty," he remarks, prancing into the church. Selene recognizes him immediately as Mr.Webster, a mortal who defended witches in the Court of Witches when he was younger. However, he quit after his daughter was murdered. Selene can't help but feel relieved that he's here, but is curious as to why he'd show up now.
"Mr.Webster," Faustus greets the man in annoyance. "You are not unknown to this court, but you are unwelcome, sir, and uninvited."
"Untrue, sir," Webster shakes his head. "Where my client goes, I follow."
At this, Selene and Zelda gape at Sabrina. "Client?"
"He's my lawyer," Sabrina smirks at the man, causing the crowd to whisper. Eventually, however, Selene's father manages to quiet them down, and after some deliberations with Mr.Webster, the trial begins.
"Do you know what Breach of Promise is, Miss Spellman?" Faustus questions, knowing very well that she does.
"It's when you make a promise, and then break it," Sabrina answers. "Which I, categorically, did not do."
"It is most commonly invoked when a groom runs out on a bride he's promised to wed. I only mention that, because well, were you and the Dark Lord not courting in advance of your dark baptism?"
"Courting?" Sabrina echoes. "In what way?"
"Did you not willingly go into the woods with my daughter that night? Wearing, of all things, a wedding dress? Fact is, you gave every indication that it was your intention to fulfill a promise made. You showed up for a ceremony you'd committed to and then, at the moment of consummation, you fled. You broke your promise. That's all."
Faustus then takes his seat, while Mr.Webster stands up. "Sabrina, members of the court, where is the tangible proof? If this baptism is to be considered a wedding, where is the marriage license? The blood tests this great township demands? Show me the signatures! Hell, show me the groom! No contract. No promise. No case."
He then returns to his seat. Faustus considers what Mr.Webster says, before he stands up. "I'd like to submit into evidence our most unholy grimoire, the Book of the Beast. Miss Spellman, would you be so kind as to open it to the page I've indicated?"
Sabrina does as told, before her eyes widen in anger. Faustus smirks, before nodding at the book. "Would you please read the name that's been written there? Nice and loud, child."
"Oh, shit," Selene curses, instantly realizing what evidence her father is talking about. A few years ago, Selene had gotten ahold of the Book of the Beast, and went through it, searching for the names of her ancestors. She found some of her ancestor's names, but she also came across another one. Sabrina's. But it wasn't written in Sabrina's handwriting, and it was dated when she was only a few years old.
"It says, 'Sabrina Spellman'," she whispers in disbelief. "But... I don't understand this. This is dated only a few days after I was born."
"A baby couldn't of signed the book," Webster yells, approaching Sabrina and Faustus. "This is obviously a fraud, a blatant forgery."
Faustus rolls his eyes, before he finds the eldest Spellman in the audience. "I call to the stand Zelda Phiona Spellman."
"Zelda, what did you do?" Selene gasps, but the woman ignores her. Zelda is as pale as a ghost as she silently makes her way to the stand.
"Ms.Zelda Spellman, take us back to this day here," Faustus breathes, pointing to the date in the book.
"Of course, Your Excellency," Zelda complies, guilt written all over her face. "I accompanied my brother into the Greendale Wood. In his arms, he carried his newborn daughter, Sabrina. When we reached a clearing, he placed the babe on an altar, and signed her name in the Book of the Beast. Promising her soul to the Dark Lord."
Selene gapes at the woman before she slowly turns to Hilda. "Did you know about this?"
"I had no bloody idea."
