Grief
The wind blew hard as sounds of sobbing could be heard.
Richard Cole was dead, no one wanted to believe it but it was true.
Everyone was grieving their deceased friend, especially Matt who was holding the journalist tightly. Matt was the one who witnessed it happened, the man who followed them planned on killing Matt but it was because of Richard's sacrifice that Matt was able to live.
This would have gone on longer if it wasn't for Lohan who suggested they leave.
"We must leave, Nightrise might send out more of their men and we don't need any else getting-." He cut himself off before he could finish his sentence, not wanting to cause more grief.
"W-What about Richard?" Scarlett asked, trying to dry her tears.
"We will give him a proper burial when we get back to the lodge, for now, let's leave the area." Lohan went towards Matt who was still holding onto the journalist, he got down on one knee and looked at Matt. "May I?"
Matt knew what he was asking but was hesitant, he hesitantly handed the journalist to Lohan who had to take Matt's hard grip off him. Lohan carried Richard in his arms as he got up and started walking towards the snowmobiles. The others started to follow Lohan but Matt was still on the ground, Pedro had to help Matt off the ground so he could get him on the snowmobile.
"Matt, I suggest you ride with Pedro, Scarlett I will ride with you." Lohan insisted, the five were okay with that idea.
The ride back was silent, grief still hung over them and no one wanted to ask Matt how exactly Richard died. But judging by the second body they saw and the fact that there were three people chasing them, it had to do something with the man that followed them.
They were nearing their destination as they caught a view of Vanessa's car, Vanessa herself was currently outside of her car looking for the others. Once she saw them, she started to smile but was then replaced with a horrified look as she saw Lohan carrying Richard.
"Oh my god, what happened?"
"He was killed," Lohan stated. "May I be seated in the very back?"
"Of course."
The five got seated in the car, drove away from Nightrise, and just like that it was silent again, it wasn't until Vanessa started talking.
"If you all would like I could call some people and they could transport the body to Great Britain, that way you can have the funeral there."
"That would be a wise decision, Richard's family lives in Great Britain, so it only makes sense to hold the funeral over there."
"Is that okay?" Vanessa asked the five, all of whom nodded in agreement.
Matt looked out the window, thinking about how just yesterday they were only ice skating, enjoying each other's company, and now they're discussing what to do for the funeral, something he expected that they would talk about when they returned home. In all honesty, he just wanted to go back home, where he could just lock himself in his room and let grief take over. He turned his head back so he could see Richard, he still couldn't believe he was dead, a part of him actually hoped this was all just a dream and any minute now he would wake up in his bed, telling everyone what his dream was about as they discussed what they were going to do that day.
But he knew that this was no dream.
They soon arrived at the lodge, Lohan went upstairs to lay Richard's body in the room that the journalist stayed in and Vanessa went into the kitchen to make some calls. The five stayed in the living room, waiting to see what would happen soon, It would have been silent if it weren't for Scott who broke the silence.
"I know this is irrelevant to the situation right now but I picked this up when we were about to leave." Scott took out a journal from his pocket, it was the notes.
Matt looked at the notes with anger.
"Burn them, they're rubbish anyway." He responded as he got up.
"But didn't you say we were going to give them to the Nexus," said Jamie.
"I honestly don't care what you do with the notes, I just don't want to see them ever again." Matt went upstairs to go to his room, he noticed Lohan closing Richard's door. Lohan noticed the boy who was staring at him.
"I understand that you're going through so much sorrow." Lohan spoke, "But I believe that these dark times will pass."
Matt didn't respond, he just looked down, refusing to meet the triad's eyes.
"I can see that you don't want to talk at the moment." The triad waited for a response but as he predicted, the boy did not respond. "Very well, I shall leave you alone."
Matt proceeded to go into his room, staying silent the entire time.
Lohan knew that his attempts to comfort the grieving boy were futile and possibly made the boy feel even worse. He walked downstairs to see the others were silent as well, it wasn't until Scarlett noticed Lohan that she then decided to speak.
"Lohan...what's going to happen?"
Lohan was hesitant to answer, he honestly didn't know what was going to happen. Even though Lohan and Richard were in charge of taking care of the five it was mostly Richard who did most of the domestic work. Yes, Lohan would do his part to help but the truth of the matter was that Lohan was never good at living a domestic life due to the fact that he was raised to be just like his Father. That's why he was grateful that Richard was there because he understood and was okay doing most of the domestic work, but now that he's gone he doesn't know what to do.
"First off, I'm going to make a few calls, after that we'll start on funeral preparations." He answered vaguely.
"What about us, what's going to happen to us?" Pedro asked.
Lohan was hesitant. "I don't know, we'll have to talk to the Nexus about that?"
Vanessa walked into the living run as she hung up her phone. "I just finished talking to some people and they said that they will be coming over to pick up the body. I also called up Nathalie to tell her what happened and she said that she's coming here tonight."
Vanessa looked around the room and noticed that Matt was missing, she looked at Lohan who then point upstairs. She nodded and started heading upstairs, she knew that this was none of her business but she hoped she could comfort the five, she was then in front of Matt's door and knocked on it.
"Matt, are you there?" she received no response, "I know this is none of my business but just know that I know what you're all going through and if any of you ever want to talk, I'm here."
Matt remained quiet, Vanessa knew she couldn't get through to the boy and decided that for now, it would be best to leave him be. Meanwhile, Matt was lying on his bed with his blanket covering him as he hugged himself.
'It's my fault, It's my fault, if I wasn't such a coward then he would still be alive.' He thought to himself. 'Why am I still here?'
Later on in the day, some people came to the house to pick up the journalist's body, Vanessa proceeded to guide them to Richard's room. Matt heard multiple footsteps coming from outside his door and decided to see what it was, he looked outside to see people he didn't recognize going into Richard's room with a stretcher. He noticed Vanessa and decided to ask her what was going.
"Matt, remember what Lohan and I talked about in the car?" Vanessa asked, Matt nodded. "Well, these people are here to transport the body, that way you can have the funeral in Great Britain."
Matt saw the people leave Richard's room as they pushed the stretcher out, they put a blanket of sorts over the body and proceeded to leave the house. The others felt uncomfortable with this but understood that it needed to be done, Matt, on the other hand, couldn't stand seeing this so he ran back to his room.
Once it was night, they heard a knock coming from the door, Vanessa opened the door to reveal Nathalie, The two women greeted each other and started to talk.
"I came as soon as I heard, how did this happen?" Nathalie gave Vanessa a worried look.
"Matt doesn't want to tell us what happened but based on Lohan's assumptions, Richard might've been killed by one of Nightrise's men."
"How are they doing? How is Matt taking this?" Nathalie knew that out of everyone Richard was the one Matt was close to the most.
"Everyone's been quiet, Lohan has been making phone calls, and Matt...he hasn't been doing well, every since we got back he's been locked inside his room."
Nathalie then proceeded to cover her face with her hands, feeling as though it's her fault that this happened. "I knew this was a bad idea, I knew it, if I listened to my instincts then maybe-"
"Hey, it's not your fault okay, none of us would have known this would have happened."
"I know it's just, they were so happy being together, I feel like if we didn't send them on this mission then maybe everyone would be okay."
After that, Nathalie then came in and greeted everyone. Jamie, Scott, and Scarlett said a quick hello while Pedro just gave a small wave, it was obvious that they were still grieving. Vanessa ended up making dinner for everyone to eat, Lohan tried to call Matt to come eat but he received no response from the boy. He was about to go get the boy until he felt a hand on his shoulder, he turned to face Nathalie.
"Be patient, Lohan, he's in grief."
"Alright, I'll just leave his dinner in his room so he can eat later."
"Let me, it's been a while since I've seen him." Nathalie got up, grabbed Matt's plate, and started heading towards his room, once she was in front of his door she knocked. "Matt, it's Nathalie, I'm just here to leave you your dinner."
She opened the door only to see that the lights were turned off with the only source of light being the moon shining through the window. Nathalie walked towards Matt's bed and placed the plate on the nightstand, the boy was laying on his side with his back facing Nathalie.
"I'm truly sorry about what happened, I know this is affecting you the most considering how close you and Richard were." Matt remained still. "I promise Matt, things will get better soon, ."
Nathalie ruffled Matt's hair as she left the room, Matt turned to face the door, once he was sure Nathalie was gone he laid on his side once more. Matt was exhausted and he didn't feel hungry, all he wanted to do was disappear.
Matt must've fallen asleep because the next thing he knew he was in the dream world, he looked around until his eyes landed on the library. Matt knew he had to confront the librarian for blatantly lying to his face, he knew that he was supposed to die and the librarian said that he couldn't change that. He went into the library, searching for the man who lied to him, he called for the man but no response, it wasn't until he walked into the same room he was in the last time that he then found the librarian.
"You!" Matt shouted as he walked towards the librarian.
"Matthew, good to see you again." He responded in a calm voice.
"You lied to me!"
"What exactly did I lie about?"
Matt's anger grew. "You know exactly what you lied about, you told me I couldn't change faith, that I couldn't change my vision."
"Yes, I did say that."
"Then explain to me why instead of me dying it was Richard who got-" Matt cut himself off, he didn't want to finish his sentence.
"Matthew, I said YOU couldn't change your vision but that doesn't mean the others can't." The librarian explained. "The people around you could change how the scenario would play out whether they knew about the vision or not, your friend chose to sacrifice himself for you thus changing your vision"
That's when a thought came into Matt's head.
"You knew, you knew all along that he was going to die didn't you?"
"I only assumed that he wouldn't have lived long." The librarian handed Matt a book, Richard's book.
"Why didn't you tell me, I could have saved him, I could have helped him, I could have done something." Matt broke down into tears. "If I did something then maybe he would still be with us."
"I am truly sorry for your loss." The librarian responded as he placed a hand on the weeping boy's shoulder. "Matthew, I have something else to tell you."
"And what's that?"
"This is only the beginning, throughout your journey of grief there will be many decisions made, some will leave you heartbroken and some will help lead you to peace, it is with those decisions that will determine who you will be in the end."
Matt understood what the librarian was saying but the real question was:
Is he ready for what lies ahead?
So next chapter the five are going to finally leave Alaska and go home but that doesn't mean trouble stops.
