Fault
It was the next day, everyone was packing up their belongings since it was their last day in Alaska. The twins were in their room packing but Jamie looked like he was lacking the energy to do so, Scott took notice of this and started to worry.
"Jamie, what's wrong?" Scott asked as he stopped packing.
"I've just been thinking about how different things are going to be now"
"What do you mean?"
"Think about it Scott, do you really think things are going to be the same once we go back to Britain," Jamie responded, he sat on his bed as tears started to form in his eyes.
"No, no they're not." Scott sat down next to Jamie and hugged him. "I can't promise that everything is going to be back to normal but I know that if we have each other, it's going to be okay,"
"I'm worried about the others too, specifically Matt and Pedro."
"They blame themselves for Richard's death even though it's not their fault." Scott noticed that Jamie was starting to cry. "Hey, want me to get you something to drink or eat?."
"Just some water."
"Alright, I'll be right back." Scott left the room thinking about his brother, he knew that it was up to him to be strong for both of them.
Scott walked into the kitchen and was about to grab some water until he noticed a figure outside, he opened the door to see Pedro looking out into the snow.
"Pedro? What are you doing out here?"
"Scott, I didn't see you there." Pedro responded as he tried to dry his eyes. "I just wanted to be outside since it's our last day in Alaska and it doesn't usually snow in Britain."
"Pedro, don't lie to me, why are you outside?"
"...I needed a place where no one could hear me."
"Why? What were you doing?"
Pedro responded but Scott couldn't hear it due to the fact that Pedro was quiet.
"What? Say that again, I couldn't hear you."
Pedro responded once more but a little louder, Scott still couldn't hear him though.
"Goddamn it Pedro, speak up." Scott was starting to get annoyed.
"I was blaming myself okay!" Pedro shouted, he sat down as he hid his face. "It's my fault that Richard is dead, if I had gotten there sooner or if I tried harder then maybe he would still be with us."
"Pedro, it's not your fault." Scott sat down next to Pedro.
"Everyone keeps saying that but no matter how many times I hear it I still feel like it's my fault." Scott could see the tears coming from Pedro's eyes. "I'm the healer, I'm supposed to heal people when they get hurt but I couldn't even save our friend and now so many people are hurting because of me."
Scott understood how Pedro felt, he remembers how he blamed himself for Professor Chamber death when they were in Peru. He felt like he let everyone down and it took a long time just for him to finally understand it that it wasn't his fault.
"Pedro look at me." Pedro looked up at the taller boy. "You're a great healer and a great friend, we know you did your best to save Richard and believe me when I say that no one blames you, not only that but I understand how you feel."
"Professor Chambers."
"Yeah, when she died I felt like I was to blame, I felt useless and that I let her down."
"But it wasn't your fault."
"Yeah, I learned... eventually." Scott looked out into the snow. "I don't want you going through the same feelings I went through and if I have to hammer that fact into your skull until you understand then I will."
Pedro gave Scott a smiled. "Thank you Scott, but what if people do blame me?"
"Then I'll make sure they regret it." Scott joked
"So you would make me regret saying it's my fault," Pedro responded with a smile.
"I'll make an exception just this once, but if I do see you blaming yourself I won't hesitate." Scott joked as he punched the small boy lightly on the shoulder. "Anyways, I'm gonna head back inside, I promised Jamie I would bring him some water, think about what I said in the meantime though."
Pedro nodded as Scott went back inside. He couldn't promise Scott that he would stop blaming himself for Richard's death but he's happy to know that Scott is there for him. He's also happy to see that Scott has changed, the first time they met he always kept to himself but nowadays he's been rather open, yes he still keeps to himself but not as much as when they first met. A smile crept on Pedro's face as he turned around to face the snow.
'You're a good friend too, Scott.'
Later
Vanessa came to pick them up when they finished packing, once they made it to the airport they said their goodbyes to Vanessa. Just like that the five and Lohan were on a plane that would take them back to Britain. Pedro ended up sitting next to Matt who wasn't very talkative at the time, which made Pedro even more guilty, it felt like he's the reason why Matt is like this.
Almost everyone on the plane fell asleep but Pedro and Matt were still awake. Pedro felt like this was a good time to at least say something to Matt.
"Matteo... I'm sorry." Matt turned to Pedro with a blank expression. "It's my fault, if I had gotten there sooner then maybe Richard would still be here... I'm sorry that I have caused you great pain, you have every reason to hate me."
Matt's expression was replaced with a worried look. "Pedro, I know it's not your fault and I don't hate you, I don't think I ever could."
"But I feel like it is my fault."
"If this is about me not talking to you then know I'm not talking to you because I blame you, I just don't feel like talking to anyone," Matt explained, turning his head to face the window again. "Just know that I don't hate or blame you for what happened."
Pedro's worries were somewhat put at ease, he looked at the English boy and noticed how his appearance has changed within the few days they were in Alaska. The boy looked numb, his eyes were dull, almost like there was no light in them, the skin under his eyes were dark, his hair looked like a mess, he looked like he just didn't want to be there. Pedro knew that Matt would be the most affected by Richard's death and seeing Matt in this state made him worry, he wanted to hug him and tell him that he was there for him but something in him told him to leave him alone for now.
'Matteo.'
After a long time, the five and Lohan finally arrived home but it felt empty.
"Do you five want anything to eat?" Lohan asked.
"I could eat," Scott responded.
"I'm kinda hungry," Scarlett spoke.
"Alright, you all unpack while I order the food."
All five of them went upstairs to their rooms with their suitcases so they could unpack. Once Jamie and Scott were in their room Jamie's phone started to ring, he took it out of his pocket and looked at the caller, it was Alicia.
"It's Alicia."
"Are you going to pick it up?"
"Well, we haven't seen her in two months and we haven't talked to her in a while so why not." He answered the phone. "Hey, Alicia."
"Jamie, it's good to hear from you again," Alicia's cheerily responded. "Danny wanted to call you on skype yesterday but no one was picking up, I told him that you were probably busy but he insisted that we call you today on the phone."
"Come on, mom I want to talk to him too!" Jamie could hear a second voice coming from the phone.
"Hey Danny, sorry we missed you yesterday, we were in Alaska and we didn't bring our laptop."
"You were in Alaska, cool! How was it?"
Jamie froze a bit, he didn't know what to say. Scott noticed Jamie's current state and quickly took the phone from his hand.
"Hey Danny, it's me, Scott."
"Scott! Did you go to Alaska too?"
"Yeah, we all did, we're currently unpacking." Scott spoke "The trip went.. let's just say... it was surprising."
"Did something go wrong?" Danny asked, Scott tried to come up with something but luckily for him, Alicia grabbed the phone from Danny.
"Danny, I think it's best if you give me the phone."
"But Jamie didn't answer my question and he usually likes talking about fun things, not only that but Scott said that their trip was surprising."
"I'm sure that if something bad happened they would tell us themselves, right Scott?"
"Um..yeah."
"Scott, Jamie, did something happen?"
'Fuck.' Both the twins thought.
"No, it was just surprising that's all!" Jamie lied, trying to add some cheerfulness to his voice.
"Jamie, don't lie to me, what happened." Alicia's tone soon changed to a parental tone.
"I...I," tears started to appear in Jamie's eyes. "Scott you tell them."
"Scott."
"...Richard is dead." It was silent for a minute.
"W-What? How did this happen?"
"We were sent to Alaska to find out what Nightrise was doing, we broke in but they caught us and started to chase us, we split up but in the end, it didn't even matter," Scott explained, he looked at Jamie, who didn't want to hear this. "Matt called Pedro to go help him, along the way we found them and when we found Matt and Richard... it was too late."
"I am so very sorry, I know it's difficult to lose someone, are you all okay?"
"The others aren't taking it so well, Lohan has been trying to busy himself, Scarlett hasn't been talking much, Pedro blames himself for Richard's death, and Matt...he hasn't been himself."
"What did the Nexus say?"
"Don't know, beside Nathalie, we haven't met up with them yet."
Alicia was silent for a while until she spoke again "I'm going to put you on hold for a minute, I need to talk to Danny."
"Alright." The line went mute, Scott turned to face Jamie, "Jamie?"
Jamie started to dry his tears, "I'm sorry, I'm just a bit emotional right now."
"It's alright."
"Should we have told them?"
"Eventually they would have found out, you know they like to visit us and you know Richard and Alicia were pretty good friends from the looks of it."
Alicia and Danny would visit the five sometimes, it was due to those visits that Richard and Alicia became good friends. She would sometimes give him advice on how to take care of children and he would tell her about the five so she could have a clear understanding of them.
The twins then heard Alicia's voice once more.
"Is Lohan taking care of you?"
"I believe so but since he's a triad he's always traveling, sometimes for a really long time."
"I see, well Danny and I talked and we agreed that maybe it's best if we go to Great Britain so we can help you."
"Alicia you don't have to do that," Scott responded, he honestly wasn't sure about the idea.
"Scott, you know we consider all of you family and we want to help you."
"Yeah, and mom said that Lohan could use the help since he's not that great at this stuff," Danny spoke.
"I really think you should tell Lohan though." Jamie spoke up.
"I'll call him soon after this, I'll see you two later, remember that everything is going to be okay."
"Bye Alicia, Bye Danny."
"Bye, you two."
Later at night
The five and Lohan were currently eating in silence, Scott examined everyone at the table and noticed how different they've become. Scarlett was picking at her food in silence, Pedro would always glance at Matt who looked like he hasn't gotten enough sleep, Lohan was avoiding eye contact, and Jamie just sat there eating his food in silence. Scott glanced at the empty chair at the end of the table, he saw Matt glance at the chair sometimes and he could see why.
it was a painful reminder of their deceased friend.
"So...Alicia called me earlier, do you two have anything to do with it?" Lohan broke the silence as he stared at Jamie and Scott,
"I guess so, what did she say?" Jamie asked.
"She asked if it was okay if she stayed here for a few months to help me take care of you five."
"And what did you say?" Scott asked.
"I told her yes, I told her we could use the extra help."
"So Alicia and Danny are coming here?" Scarlett spoke up.
"Yes."
'The last thing we need is more people here.' Matt thought sarcastically, Scott was not happy with Matt's reaction.
"And what's that supposed to mean?"
"It means we don't need other people to meddle in our lives," Matt growled with anger in his voice. "And can you not read my mind for once!"
"Well, how else are we supposed to know what you're thinking, you never talk to us!"
"How about you stay out of my bloody business you fucking twat!"
"Don't call me a twat you little bitch!"
Both boys were up on their feet, almost like they were ready to claw at each other but luckily Lohan was able to get in between them.
"You two, stop it," Lohan commanded.
"He started it!" Scott spoke out.
"Well, maybe you shouldn't have read my mind!"
"That's enough from you two, you either sit down and be quiet or you two can go upstairs and go to bed."
Matt took a deep breath as a way to calm himself down. "Scott can stay here, I'm going to bed."
"Very well."
Matt got up and started to leave, he stopped once he reached the door frame. "Hey Lohan, can I sleep in Richard's room?"
Lohan didn't know how to react, "Are you sure about that?"
"Yes, I don't want to bother the others."
Lohan didn't know what to do, he didn't want to cause the boy more pain and he wasn't sure if this was a good idea. In the end though, he nodded and let the boy be.
Once Matt left the kitchen, Jamie decided to speak "Are you sure that was a good idea?"
"Matthew is going through a lot of pain, if this makes him feel better then I'll let him."
"I'm just worried about him, he's not himself."
Lohan has noticed that none of the five have been themselves but he wasn't sure how to help them, he just hoped that once Alicia arrived that maybe she could help them.
Alicia and Danny have made their appearance and are finally going to be part of the story.
Sorry this is a bit late, I got caught up with some things so it was a bit difficult to get out early which is why I'm posting this at 1 am,( I have issue). Anyways, Peace out guys!
