Chapter Three.
P.O.V of Dick.
As soon as I got into school my brothers peeled off to their friend groups, Jason with the 'cool kids' and Tim with the 'nerds' whilst I stayed by myself, the outsider since Barbra left last year. One of the downfalls of being the youngest amongst your only friend. Notice the lack of plural, she was my only friend. Thankfully as soon as we arrived the bell went and we headed to our first class, I was in P.E and Jason had been moved up for this class. Hopefully this wouldn't be as disastrous as last lesson; I vividly remember Lucas' face as he beat me up. I changed quickly and headed into the gym. After a couple of minutes the rest of the class filed in, followed by Artemis. Guess she was teaching us P.E today.
"Alright class. Let's start simple." She said, "I'm going to need you all to run five laps of the hall for me."
"But this hall is the size of a football pitch miss." One of the students, Kevin I think, complained.
"Would you like me to make it six?" She asked which she got a chorus of no's and we were off.
Jason and I kept pace next to each other, not to fast but not too slow.
"When should we be out of breath for her?" He asked.
"Fourth lap we walk half of it." I replied, "Then we go back into a slightly slower jog for the final lap."
"That sounds better than average." He pointed out.
"Yeah, but the class knows we're the best athletes." I said as we started our second lap, "We have to keep to both parties."
"Right." He nodded, "That's why you are always sent on undercover missions."
"No, that's just because I'm adorable." I chuckled.
We followed through and returned to Artemis soon followed by the rest of the class, who unlike us, their sweating and their panting wasn't fake.
"Good." Artemis said, "Today's activity is going to be self-defence. Can the two best sportsmen come up for the example?"
The whole class looked at Jason and I and we, hesitantly, stepped forward as he muttered, "So much for secrets."
I chuckled under my breath and then laughed even harder as Artemis instructed us the best command I had ever heard, "I don't want you to hold back. As soon as you have your opposition into a sure death position, stop."
"Are we going to go full out Dick?" Jason asked me in front of the class.
"Of course Jay." I smirked and he smirked back, "If that is what the teacher wants."
"Begin." She said.
Jason only just dodged my first kick around to him but as he ducked he was meat with my fist as I stretched under my leg in a very unnatural position. He stumbled back and when I went to flip over him he grabbed my ankle and dragged me down onto the floor hard enough that I saw stars. As he came down to grab my neck I rolled over and stood up, jumping on his back and expecting him to fall on his face. What he did however was then flip me over the top of him. I stood back up and we faced each other. His nose was bloody and he was favouring his left side, and I could say the same of me. This time he came at me first and feinted right, which I saw and so caught his fist and twisted until I heard it snap.
"Why you little-" He growled as he looked down at his hand which was now backwards.
As he ran at me I went over to the wall and climbed up the gym equipment and smirked down at him. He just smirked back and before I even registered what had happened a 20kg weight disk knocked the wind from me and I landed on the floor. He came over, despite how much Artemis was now protesting, but as he again reached down I brought my legs up and wrapped them around his neck, in a position where I could easily break his neck.
"I take that as I won." I panted.
"Next time I'll throw a heavier weight." He growled as I released him and we both stood up.
"Jay, I'm sure your max for throwing is currently 20." I replied as we walked back over to the rest of the class, "When you can press the full fifty it can increase to 30."
"Boys are you okay?" Artemis asked and the class laughed at the stupid question.
"Yeah, we're fine." Jason replied then looked down at his wrist again as if just remembering about it, "Would you mind?" He held it out to me.
I smirked at I twisted it back into position, chuckling at his hiss of pain.
"Well Miss Crock." I addressed her, "What was it you wanted to teach us?"
"Both of you to the medical room now." She ordered, "The rest of the class will be learning basic fighting skills."
I laughed as we went back down the hallway and headed to the medical room. As soon as the nurse saw us she came over.
"What happened?" She asked in a bored voice.
"Gym class happened." Jason replied.
"Alright," She said, "Put an ice pack on it and come back if it still hurts after lunch."
Yay, school nurses. Jason and I took the packs and headed back to gym class.
We entered to see the class learning basic punching techniques, but they applauded when they saw us. Artemis looked over from putting the weight back and scowled at us, coming over.
"What was that boys?" She asked.
"Sorry, next time I won't hold back as much." I said, and Jason smirked because he knew that I had held back a fair amount.
"Why are we protecting you when you can fight like that?" She said.
"Because he's an idiot and most of that was luck." Jason replied, "He can't fight in a real situation, just against me."
"If I get fired because of you-"
"Relax Artemis," I interrupted her, "We won't spill. It's the rest of the class you have to worry about."
She went back over to the class and the lesson continued without much happening. However, they were promised more fighting lessons if no-one found out that they were happening. I guess that was one way of keeping the class quiet.
The next lesson was thankfully not a physical lesson; rather I sat extremely bored in Science. And, as I had guessed, our teacher was Wally.
"Today class we're going to be doing an experiment." He said, "We're going to be making Elephant's toothpaste. As much as possible. Now, have you ever done this experiment before?" Choruses of 'yes'', "Good, now grab what you need and make as much as you can in the next hour."
With that the class erupted into chaos, why couldn't Jason be overly skilled at Science and be in my class as well as Physical Education. Add on the fact that I had already completed this year two years ago, I could be doing something useful rather than making a mess with chemicals.
"Hey, Richard." Wally came over, "Are you not going to participate?"
"Nah," I replied, "May I ask you something KF?"
"Shoot."
"Why isn't Robin on the mission with you?" I asked as he pulled over a seat and sat opposite.
"He's on a mission with Batman, protecting Bruce whilst he's in London." He replied, "Why'd you ask?"
"Aren't you and him best friends?" Was my reply.
"The best of the best." He replied, "He's extremely fun to be around, like moi. And he trusts us with just about anything. The only thing he's never told us is his secret identity. I mean, he knows all of our secrets yet we can't know who he is. I mean, he could be in the class for all I know." He paused, "Well, actually I know he's in London. But you know what I mean."
"Yeah," I chuckled, trying not to think about the part where he said the only thing he didn't know was my identity, "I think I do."
"Anyway," He brushed off the topic, "Did you know Miss M is crushing on you?"
"She's a Martian." I replied, "And 18. And she's going out with SB."
"Not anymore." KF replied sadly, "They broke up last night."
"Oh," I sighed, I thought they were a rather cute pair, "What about you and Artemis?"
"What?" He blushed, "I have no idea what you're talking about."
"It's obvious that you two belong together." I said, "I mean, c'mon. You're not fooling anyone."
"Fine," He sighed, leaning down on the desk, "Maybe I like her, but she doesn't like me. In fact, I think she only puts up with me because we have to work together."
"You'll never know if you don't ask." I smirked, "So, KF, what do you say to a game tonight?"
"Huh?"
"How's Call of Duty sound?" I asked.
"Aren't you a bit young?" He scoffed.
"So?" I bit back, "I'm being hunted by a group of criminals who want me to kill for them and a mercenary that wants me to kill for him. I think I can survive a game of Call of Duty."
"Alright then." He said, "Just be prepared. I'm unbeaten."
I scoffed at that, I could beat him every time with both hands tied behind my back. In fact, I did.
"I think they may need help over there." I said, indicating the two students at the front who had made so much Elephant toothpaste that it had taken over their table.
He said farewell and headed over to them. Hopefully he'd let me sleep the rest of the lesson.
Lunch was finally over and I headed off to my third lesson of the day, History. I walked into the classroom with the rest of the class and glanced at the teacher, Conner. This wasn't going to end well with my class.
"Afternoon class." He greeted us, "I am Mr. Kent and I shall be taking your history class until the teacher feels well enough to come back into school. So, today we shall be writing an eassy on cloning technology through the ages."
"But sir, we haven't learnt about that yet." One of the more cocky students said.
"Did I give you permission to speak?" He growled, here comes that explosive temper that CADMUS put in him.
"No, I'm just saying we haven't learnt about that, like at all." He continued.
"Stand outside." He said.
The student didn't budge.
"I said step outside." Conner shouted and punched through the desk of the student.
"Um, sir." I cut in before the student could get in a witty remark, "I think I saw someone lurking about outside the window." I lied, "Like, a white mask and in a dark cloak."
"Don't move." He said, knowing I had just described an Owl, "I'll go take a look." And he left the classroom.
The class erupted into chatter about him as soon as the door closed and I sunk back in my chair, hopefully he'd have time to cool down his temper.
"And so life continues as usual." I muttered under my breath.
As if life wasn't on my side, the door to the classroom flew open and everyone looked over to see Deathstroke. He scanned the classroom and locked his eye on me, drawing his sword.
"Put that away." I ordered, "I'd rather not get into a fight right now."
The class turned to me in shock; I had just bossed around the most feared villain, bar Joker, in the world.
"I think you'll find the orders go the other way around." He growled, stepping into the classroom and locking the door behind him.
"I think you'll find that I am not becoming your apprentice." I said, "Neither am I going to be taken under the Court of Owls wing. I prefer my current state of life." I put my feet up on the table as he came over to me.
"Stand up."
I tilted my head back so that I could look him in the eye; the rest of the class had backed into a corner and had gone deathly white. I didn't budge until I heard footsteps outside the classroom, Conner's footsteps. As soon as he got to the door I ran across the room and shouted him. He punched the door down, and looked around the classroom, finally noticing the broken window and the black and orange suited man now running away from the school.
"You okay?" He asked me.
"Fine." I chirped back, "So, about that report about cloning technology through the years?"
"We're not doing it anymore." He said, "Relax for the rest of the lesson. All of you. I need to file this."
He went over to his desk and all the students returned to their seats. I sat down, put my head on the desk and went back to sleep.
Final lesson was finally over and I met Tim, Jason and the team at the front of the school.
"Anything happen today?" Aqualad asked as he came over.
"There was an attack in history but Superboy took care of it." I replied, "Apart from that, it was an astrous day."
"Pardon?" Wally said as he came over and I noticed my mistake.
"I said it was a disastrous day." I covered up, "P.E I had this horrible teacher who told me off for doing as I was told. In science the teacher didn't even teach us anything. History was great, but the teacher had slight anger issues. And Computer Science had me being showed up by Tim, again."
"Let's just get you home. What time is Damian due back?" Aqualad said as we began to walk to the Bioship.
"Whenever he has pleased his mother." Tim replied for us, "Normally around 5."We went home in silence.
