Chapter 6: Ready? - Fitz

A/n: Yup, a Fitz chapter! As I said before, I'm not very good at figuring out how Fitz would react to each different things, so, those of you who are Fitz fans, sorry if this isn't accurate. Also, I'm trying to expand on Fitz wanting to be friends with Dex, but this is NOT a Fitz x Dex story, so everything has been written with a friendship intent. Thank you, and enjoy the chapter!

PoV: Fitz

I reached out my hand towards Dex's temple. His mind was still black and empty, just as it had been for the last few times I checked on him. He was still alive, but hadn't moved in at least three days, which was worrying, to say the least.

After trying one more time to break through the black, I removed my hand and shook my head so Hazel, who was standing behind me, would know it didn't work. Again. I heard her sigh quietly behind me.

"I don't get it," she whispered, "It's been three days. Why hasn't he woken up yet?"

I turned to face the small girl. "At this point," I started, "the only person I know who could help is Sophie. She can solve this kind of problem easily, but we don't know where she is."

Hazel nodded and turned, walking out of the cabin. I looked over my shoulder at Dex again before following her out. The midday sun seemed overly bright as we stepped outside, its beams reflecting on the sea. There weren't nearly as many campers out as there were in the days past, but those who were out were training for the upcoming battle. Percy didn't tell anyone who they were fighting, exactly, but that didn't stop any of them from practicing, which my fragile mind would never let me partake in.

"Uh, hey Hazel?" I asked as I watched Percy fighting against Jason, " What was Percy's plan? The last thing I heard was 'Lets fight', or something like that. "

Hazel gave a small smile, "That pretty much was his plan. The campers here aren't part of an army, unlike at Camp Jupiter. They don't train for battle like we Romans do."

I nodded in understanding. The people here had been telling me a lot about this other camp, and it had me thinking, "If Camp Jupiter is basically just an army, do you think they'll help us fight? We could use it."

Hazel shrugged, "Maybe. For all we know, they're in the middle of their own battle right now. Relying on their help may not be the best option."

The sound of footsteps coming towards me grabbed my attention from the training demigods. Hazel and I both turned to face Nico, who was running towards us. Hazel had asked him to talk with his father about Dex, to make sure he'd be okay. "Is everything okay, Nico?" I asked as he came to a stop.

"Dex," he wanted as he caught his breath , "He's fine. My dad hasn't seen or heard anything about him."

" So, why were you running? " Hazel asked.

"Because of Dex," he said vaguely.

"More explanation, please." I demanded.

" I'm getting there." Nico took a deep breath, "So, the whole spirit dilemma is over, first of all, but my dad said that some of them were panicking over something. When we asked them about it, they just said we had to be careful. There also was this girl who just kept saying something like 'follow the bird, ' or something? She didn't remember how she came up with that phrase, so I was wondering if you guys knew."

" Follow the bird, " I muttered, trying to remember why it sounded to important, "Follow the bird... follow the pretty bird across the sky."

" Uh, what does that mean? " Hazel asked me.

"I'm not entirely sure, but I know it has to do with Sophie."

" So, if that has to do with Sophie, what does Dex have to do with this? " Hazel addressed Nico.

"Well, they told us to be careful. And, I'm assuming Dex hasn't woken up yet, so maybe I'm wrong, but if the Neverseen show up, he can't do anything, obviously. Who knows what they might try on him?"

I looked back at the cabin for a moment before looking back at Nico. "So, what do you plan on doing?"

" I don't know, honestly. "

"How do you 'not know'!?" I exclaimed, " You come to us saying Dex will probably be defenceless to an attack that'll probably happen today, and have no way to help?! "

"Fitz, chill!" Hazel said, "We'll make sure Dex is fine."

I took a deep breath, " Look. Dex is the only other elf here. He's already 'died' once, and I don't know how everyone else would feel if he died for real this time. Sophie would probably break because she feels responsible for everyone, and none of us would be able to live with that. Please. Sophie already doesn't like me, and I don't want to make our relationship worse. "

Nico sighed, "Alright. I'll try. But don't expect too much from me."

" Thank you, Nico, " Hazel said with a smile. As Nico walked away, she turned to me, "Don't worry about Dex. We'll figure it out."

I hesitated for a moment before nodding, "Okay. "

"Hazel! Fitz!" Percy called, " You gonna train or what? "

"We'd better go," Hazel said, smiling as she walked towards the arena. I followed close behind, trying to keep my eyes away from Will and the other Apollo children, who were helping some campers that had gotten injured. Instead, I focused on some of the Hephestus campers, whom I had given one of Dex's  gadgets and asked to know what it did, since I actually didn't know. Two days later, they still hadn't figured it out.

"So, who's fighting against who?" Hazel asked.

" Not me, " Percy declared, "I just got done."

"I'm out too," Jason sighed, " I'll watch a round. "

Piper rolled her eyes, "Well, I may as well go, since they won't," she towards Frank, Percy, and Jason.

"What makes you think I'm not training?" Frank asked.

"The fact that you only go against Hazel."

Hazel thought for a moment before laughing, "Well, she's not wrong!"

"I think Fitz should go," Jason said lightly.

I stole a look at Hazel. " Um, I'm good. Piper and Hazel can go against each other. "

"Come on, Fitz!" Frank exclaimed as Piper pushed him forward, "Pipes is one of the best people to start with. Either her or Hazel. And she already volunteered."

" You'll be fine, " Hazel encouraged, but her eyes betrayed the confidence in her voice, "Just be careful." I nodded and let Piper push me into a preparation room of sorts. Jason followed behind to answer any questions I had, and I had many. Eventually, he started asking me questions, like "have you ever fought someone before?", "Who taught you? " , that kind of thing.

"Do you have a weapon to fight with?" He asked after I refused to wear any armor of any kind.

I reached a hand into one of my pockets and grabbed the throwing star hidden inside. "Yeah. I do. "

"And?" He urged, apparently curious.

As fast as I could, I pulled the star out of my pocket and threw it above Jason's head, lodging it into the wooden wall, "And I can be dangerous if I want to."

Jason pulled the star out of its place in the wall and examined it, "Well, I'm no weapons expert, but I've never seen this kind of throwing star before."

" And yet you're totally find with coins and pens that turn into swords? " I pointed out, remembering the weapons Percy and Jason said they carried around.

"I guess that's fair. Still, it looks different."

" They were made by my bodyguard. She liked to make them unique. "

"What'd you say her name was again?"

"Cecil." I lied.

Jason nodded in understanding before tossing the star back to me, "She sounds... interesting."

I gave a small laugh, "Yeah, she is. A bit overprotective, but still nice."

" Well, you'd better get out there before Piper gets anxious. "

"Okay." I took a few steps forward before stopping, " We can use our... abilities, right? "

Jason thought for a bit . "Well, I guess you could. As long as you don't summon lightning or flood the camp," He said with a laugh.

I smiled and stepped out into the arena. Piper was already waiting, and a few campers were watching, Frank, Hazel, and Percy among them. I gave Hazel a reassuring grin before walking  closer to Piper.

"You seem confident," she called out.

"Well, I've had a bit of practice. " I replied.

"We'll see whose was better!"

I shrugged, " Sure. " Opening my mind into hers, I smiled as her thoughts all melted into mine. I waited for her to charge forward before I spoke again, "Oh, and one last thing: Abilities are allowed."

My little surprise caused her to hesitate for a second, which was long enough for me to dodge her strike, "Who said abilities were allowed?" She questioned as she planned her next move.

" Jason. He gave the ok. "

"I see," Piper growled as I dodged again, "Still, I find it unfair."

" And normal battles are completely fair, " I countered sarcastically.

"I guess," she frowned when she missed again, " Okay, how are you so good at dodging? It's almost as if you know what I'm doing before I do. "

I shrugged again, "Or you're just slow."

Piper grinned, " Ya know, you're growing on me. Now, I want to know something. "

"Shoot."

" Why haven't I seen you in the Aphrodite cabin? Lots of the girls there want you to be claimed by her so you'll join us, but you said you already were. "

"I was.  And it wasn't by Aphrodite."

" So who was it? "

 "Not saying. "

"I guess that's fair. I don't tell people who my dad is, so I can't judge. Still, if you're not an Aphrodite kid, why do you look so good? And no, I'm not trying to hit on you, since Jason's perfect. "

"I don't know. I guess I just got lucky. "

"Well then, can I assume you and Dex come from rich families? "

"What makes you think that?" I asked, dodging again.

" Maybe the fact that you guys dress like royalty? "

"Well, where we came from, my family was rich and Dex's was more poor, but by your standards he's rich. "

"'Your standards'? What's that supposed to mean?" Piper asked, grunting as I tripped her and she fell.

"Whatever you think they mean. "

Piper smiled, " This is becoming Q & A, so now it's your turn."T

"okay. So, since Aphrodite's your mom, your dad has to be someone big, right? A model or actor or something. "

"Yeah."

" And I'm guessing you don't like to follow in either of their footsteps and would rather go on quests or something? "

She nodded again, "Drawing attention to myself hasn't ever turned out good for me, really."

 "I know the feeling."

"So, has your human parent been kidnapped too? "

He question caused me to hesitate, letting her lightly prick my arm with her daggar, "Um... that's a topic I prefer to stay away from."

Piper nodded before checking my arm, "You good?"

I nodded before I realized how tired she looked, "You want to stop?"

She shrugged, " Well, I mean, you don't look tired at all!"

"I've had practice with my stamina. Come on."

As we walked out of the arena, I suddenly realized how many people were watching us. Hazel looked really relived and Percy was nowhere in sight.  Jason had joined her at some point, and Frank was talking to... someone. I couldn't see who.

Will hurried over to me, even though I was totally fine, "Will, I'm fine! " I protested as he dragged me out of the arena.

"I have to make sure, " he insisted, handing me some weird food thing. "Eat it."

Hazel was there quickly and took the food from my hand when Will wasn't looking, "Will, he looks fine. Besides, Chiron wanted to talk to him." Will muttered something inaudible under his breath before letting me go.

It was now Hazel's turn to drag me as she pulled me towards the Posiden cabin. She shoved me inside and shut the door. "Okay, what were you thinking?"

" What? "

"You didn't even look like you were trying!"

"I wasn't..."

"I know, but no one else does!" She sighed , "Look, you were just having a normal conversation the whole time. People we're really confused until you got hit. You need to hide your background better!"

" Okay, okay. Also, what is that? " I pointed to the food in Hazel's hand.

"Ambrosia. It helps heal injuries. Of course, we don't know if it'd work on elves, which is why we haven't given it to Dex yet. "

"Well, can't we try on me now? Then we could see if it works or not. "

Hazel looked at the food in her hand before sighing, "Well, I guess..."

I took the food from her hand and ripped a piece off before putting it in my mouth. The taste of mallowmelt filled my mouth as I swallowed. " Woah. "

Hazel smiled before looking at my arm, "Well, I think it works. Maybe it's just slower for elves? "

I looked at my arm and saw it slowly healing. I shrugged before turning to face Dex, who still hadn't moved. I let Hazel put the remaining pieces in Dex's mouth, bringing back memories of Sophie and how she always had Panacakes blossoms with her. I sighed at the memory when Percy jerked the door open.

"Geeze, dude! " I exclaimed as i jumped.

"Sorry. You need to see Chiron. now. "

"How'd you know we'd be here?" Hazel asked.d

"It doesn't matter right now. Just go!"

Quickly we scampered out of the room. Chiron was waiting for us in the Big House, and the look on his face said everything.

"Ready to fight?" Hazel asked .

I looked at her and smiled, "I've been ready for a while."

I'm sorry for publishing so much later than usual! I've been pretty busy today, so I didn't have much time to write. To make up for it, here's a 2,000 word chapter! This will be the start of a interesting part of the story, so I'm looking forward to writing the later chapters, but it's too late at night for me to write any more today, sadly. I will be seeing you tomorrow. Have a great day/night!
