Chapter Thirteen
I clenched my teeth together at the pain that was spreading throughout my left leg. The hybrid had bit my leg, but unlike my arm bite, this one was much more savage with the purpose to injure me and cause me a lot of pain instead of just biting me to get the venom in my bloodstream to change me.
My leg wound was horrifying. It was so bad that I couldn't even stand up anymore. Thankfully, as soon as Violet had seen my wound, she had torn off a bottom strip of her shirt for me to wrap my leg up. She was very kind and smart for such a young girl, but it seemed she was the apprentice of the pack doctor, so that was helpful.
Veronica and Sebastian had finally stopped interrogating me since I told them the truth a few days ago. They tried to starve me, but Violet always snuck me a tiny amount of her food through the metal bars to me. I refused to take much more than a few pieces of broccoli or baby carrots. She needed to eat, too, and she deserved to live more than I did. Even if I only got a little bit of food, it was enough to keep me alive.
It was hard to believe, but it had been a week since I had left the pack. It felt like it had been months since I'd been outside, since I'd seen my family, since I'd been home...
"Sammie?" Violet's sweet, little voice shook me from my thoughts. I looked up at the little girl with a small smile. She smiled back and threw a few small objects through the bars of the window. "Here."
"Thank you, Violet," I whispered, reaching for the few pieces of cauliflower. Violet went back into her cell to eat, and I ate my little meal. Finally, when I finished, I leaned my head against the wall and fell asleep.

"Samantha. Samantha, wake up," an old, raspy voice sounded in my ear as something shook me.
My eyes fluttered open slowly. I sat up from my place on the floor as my eyes tried to adjust to the bright light of the room. I froze. Wait, a second...I looked all around me, confusion and disbelief racing around my head. I was in an endless white room. There was no color whatsoever and I couldn't tell the walls from the ceiling or floor.
"Samantha." My head jerked to my right to see an old brown wolf standing next to me. I almost jumped back in surprise at her appearance.
"Elder Myanna?" I tilted my head to the side, blinking rapidly to make sure I was really seeing her.
"Samantha, this is no time for games. We don't have long now. So, listen to me." I stood up straighter, grimacing as my leg twitched. Elder Myanna glanced down at my injuries and shook her head. "Awful, but for now, there is nothing I can do about them, except this." Elder Myanna closed her eyes, and slowly, the pain diminished away to nothing. My mouth dropped open as I looked back and forth between my leg and arm to Elder Myanna. "It will only work while you're here, and it just gets rid of the pain. Now, we don't have a lot of time. We have to hurry."
I slowly got to my feet, a smile spreading across my face when no pain rushed through my body. "What's going on?" I asked, becoming serious.
"You have to get out of that place. I'm going to send you to Mason." She started to explain, but at the mention of Mason, I snapped.
"Sending me to Mason? How? What do you mean?" I started asking questions a mile a minute.
"Child, let me finish!" I closed my mouth immediately. Elder Myanna sighed and continued, "I'm able to connect your dreams. You two will be sharing dreams for a short time. You need to hurry. Talk to Mason and devise a plan. Don't tell him anything about me. Just tell him you are sharing a dream with him and devise the plan. That's it. Now, you must go." Elder Myanna turned around and began to run away.
"Wait! Elder Myanna!" I called after her, but she was already gone. Suddenly, an overwhelming exhaustion caused me to fall to the ground and fall asleep.
I woke up right after I collapsed to find myself in the middle of a forest. Immediately, I smelled that sweet, familiar scent. Before I even knew what I was doing, I shifted and took off, following the scent.
As I ran, realization hit me like a gush of wind. "I'm running," I whispered. "I'm running!" I howled happily. I yipped and barked and jumped excitedly as I ran.
Finally, I froze at the edge of a clearing in the undergrowth. Straight ahead, in the center of the clearing, was Mason. Tears of joy welled in my eyes and my tail wagged happily.
But then I noticed something was wrong. Mason was twisting around and around, looking in all directions in...fear? He was confused, frightened, and worried. What was wrong?
Finally, he growled and yelled, "I'm tired of this! Come out, you coward! I know you're not her! You can't trick me!" I just stood there, watching him. He snarled angrily, "Samantha's gone! I know she's not here! So whoever is trying to play me, just quit it and show yourself!"
Slowly, I raised a paw and placed it outside the bushes. Mason's head jerked in my direction, watching me as I stepped out into the light. For several moments, he just stood there, staring at me before his eyes widened, and he began to back away, shaking his head. "No...no, she's gone. I saw them take her. I saw them take Sammie."
I took another step forward. "Wait..." I said softly. It wasn't loud whatsoever, but Mason heard me. He froze. I took another step forward. And then another. Finally, I walked up to him, still in my wolf form. I stopped right in front of him and shifted. "Mason, it's me. I swear, it's me. I'm real." Mason shook his head.
I narrowed my eyes and grabbed his arms. "Mason, listen to me. It's me, Sammie. Please, you have to believe me," I whispered the last few words as I stared to cry.
My hands dropped from Mason's arms, and I cried softly. Suddenly, large, familiar arms wrapped around me. I leaned into Mason's chest, my tears wetting the front of his grey shirt. "I know I'm just dreaming, but I'm glad I got to see you again," he whispered.
I pushed back against Mason's chest and looked up at him. "Mason, you are dreaming. But you aren't dreaming me. I'm in your dream. We are sharing a dream." I smiled.
Mason's eyes widened. "How?"
I shook my head. I couldn't tell him. Elder Myanna told me not to. "That's not important. The important thing is that we have to hurry. I'm here to help you. I have to get out. I hate to say it, but I won't last much longer there."
Mason looked down and for the first time, noticed my wrapped up arm and leg. "What happened?" He asked, pushing me back to look at the handmade bandages.
I pulled my arm out of his grasp and put it behind my back. "It's nothing."
Mason frowned and held out his hand. "Let me see it. Now." I hesitated for a moment before I finally gave in. I held out my arm to Mason. He unwrapped the blindfold and looked at my bite. Mason's eyes widened as his mouth dropped open. Then he sat down and prompted me to do the same. I sat down in front of him. Mason untied the strip of t-shirt and examined my leg wound, my worst injury of the two. He looked at me in concern. "What happened to you?"
"I can't really explain it right now. But I'm fine. I can't feel them here." I shrugged.
Mason tore off a two large strips of his shirt for new bandages and wrapped them up. "That will help when you wake up."
I nodded and stood up, pulling Mason up with me. "But that's not why I'm here. Like I said, I have to get out. I'm being held in a dungeon. The problem is I don't know where it is."
Mason looked around in thought. Then he jerked around to look back at me. "Your scent!"
"What about it? I thought the scent just vanishes every time the trackers try to track it."
Mason narrowed his eyes suspiciously. "How did you know that?"
"Oh, vision," I said, waving it off. "But that's not important! We have to stay on topic right now!"
"Okay, okay! But I was saying that your scent could give away something that will tell us where you are," Mason explained.
I nodded. "Okay, so do you smell anything?" I asked, holding out my arms.
Mason closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "Hmm...Metal, silver, blood, werewolves, and...is that a vampire?!" Mason's eyes snapped open with a growl.
"Yes, it is, but can any of that help you find out where I am?" Mason shook his head. "Try again."
Mason nodded and tried again. "Hmm...nothing new except...wait a minute...is that...juniper berries and meadowsweet?"
"Is it?!" I asked, flailing my arms around like a maniac.
Mason nodded. "It is! And there's only one place where the two grow together for hundreds of miles. I know where you are. Now, how are we going to get you out?"
I looked down in thought when an idea popped in my head. "I have an idea. It's risky, but it's probably for the best." Mason nodded, and I began to explain my plan to him. We made a whole plan to escape. Luckily, we finished before everything began to fade. I hugged Mason one last time, his strong arms wrapping around me before we both vanished from the forest clearing.
