The Truth Behind A Rumor
Hey guys!! So this is how Snowflake was captured. It occurs right before the story. This is part of the rewrite, so there's one thing that's different from the story that's posted. The friends Snowflake hung out with were humans in the original one, but here they're werewolves. Most werewolves don't stay in one town for long, so they were passing through when they met her. They're also siblings.
The bonfire was like a flickering star in the evening, the orange flames licking the sky. The firewood kicked up sparks like a firework, and the fire roared in reply. Its wispy movements enchanted us, dragging us closer to its warmth.
We had cleared an opening in the forest as a precaution, though were still close to the trees. The wind was a partner to the both of them, guiding them from side to side. If you looked at them from far away, they were similar to dancers in a ballroom all moving in a synchronized pattern.
The grass was littered with glass bottles, most without its original content. They had been carelessly tossed to the side when we emptied them, and they no longer were of interest to us. It was a wonder that none of us were lying next to them on the ground, passed out. Looking back, I couldn't help but wonder if perhaps everything would've been different if the bottle were taken out of the picture, allowing our minds to remain sharp.
I was one of the two who were standing, swaying along with the current atmosphere. There was no music playing, yet I swore I could have heard something that night. It was what allowed me to continue dancing, my partner close enough that I could feel the fabric of his shirt brushing against my back.
I could hear laughter behind me, his breath fanning along the back of my neck, the smell of liquor making its way to my nose. I joined in on the laughter, drunk on my own feelings.
"I wonder what it's like."
I lazily lifted my head off of my partner's chest, looking in the general direction of the voice. I had forgotten there were two others here with us for a moment. Both of them were sitting on an old log, one of them had a fixated stare on the fire. The other was looking away, gazing off into the distance.
"It's just a bunch of plants. It can't be all that great," the other girl murmured, shifting her look to the forest.
"Then why do our parents obsess over it, hmm?" Her brother asked from beside of her, not looking away.
My partner's hand drifted to my waist, a finger finding its way through my belt loop and gently pulling me closer to him. I smiled, enjoying his attention, while I continued dancing along with the invisible tempo.
"If you don't believe them, then why don't you go in? Nothing's going to happen," her brother replied with a smug look. His sister narrowed her eyes in annoyance, but she didn't respond.
"That's what I thought, you know it's too dangerous," he said, and I couldn't help but laugh. My dancing partner began laughing again, his sister joining in, and eventually, his brother. We all laughed, as if it were the funniest thing he could've said.
My eyes rolled before I became a part of the conversation, unable to contain my opinion. "There's no way that humans are out in that forest waiting to capture a werewolf. They're mindless idiots; they don't have the determination or mindset for it." I slowly turned around and pressed my nose along the collarbone of my partner.
His lips pressed against my ear as he asked, "If they're so stupid, why don't you go into the forest?"
He may have whispered the words, but with their increased hearing, his siblings has caught them. They both looked at me with anticipation, waiting for me to decline or accept the silent challenge.
"Are you afraid?"
"Come on, it's just a forest."
I began laughing at their naivety . "Are you guys serious? It's way too easy to walk into the forest. I could walk for hours and nothing would happen," I started before looking up at my dancing partner. "You're weak. You know it isn't much of a dare," I added, smiling.
His eyes sparked at the words before he grinned back. "Alright sweetheart, go into the forest as a wolf."
For a moment, it was silent. We were all struck with mute astonishment, balancing between the state of an unclear and clear mind. But then, suddenly someone laughed, and we were all back in our drunken states.
"There's no way someone's in the forest."
"Even if there is, you'd be the deadliest animal in there. You could outtake any human."
I nodded, agreeing with them.
I would be fine against a few humans, but their technology...I wasn't too sure about. Humans are nothing without their toys, something they never seemed to realize.
I pulled away from my dancing partner, who started to protest, before I walked off and shifted. My paws touched the soft ground before I pranced around the group, holding the spotlight of their attention. They were excited, eager to see if all the tales our parents told us were true.
Without further delay, I kicked off the ground with my hind paws. The dampened ground was unrestricting to my sprint, but the wind was unable to accept me. My mother's words of advice were casually tossed away as I charged forward, unchaining my motives. Acting human is just a shackle.
Here in the forest, I could be myself. My speed, on par with the wind, gave me the greatest pleasure. I didn't have to hide, or pretend to be something I wasn't. I was free to be the legendary animal that nightmares were told about, that little children and even some adults feared. This new freedom was exhilarating.
I couldn't help but let out a howl of pride, making sure I was loud enough to hear. I was invincible as the scariest creature in the forest. The thought excited me, tempting me to run faster.
My paws pounded on the ground, shoving me against the unrelenting wind. The wind was now whistling through my fur, attempting to slow me down. However, it couldn't stop me from enjoying this moment.
I became so mesmerized by the wind that I neglected my surroundings, even the sudden rustling noises around me. Had I been paying more attention, it would've been clear.
One moment, I was running, and the next, a net was flying high in the air, ensnaring me in its trap. I tripped, fell to the ground, and collapsed. I quickly stood up, but found myself falling again, the nets wires cutting further into my skin. My struggle only made the situation worse.
Voices around me were thrilled at the sight that was before them. My heart was bursting apart, and my eyes searched for escape in a feverish frenzy. I kept fighting against the net, until finally I found a thin spot.
I tried moving further. My nose was finally free of the net. Just as I inched away, something pricked my side, causing my vision to become hazy and darken.
