Original Short Story
Okay, so this will be long, but they're the original five chapters that were entered for a competition and how I first wanted the story to work. You'll see plenty of differences.
Chapter One:
I sat tall by his chair, looking forward. He wasn't doing much, just filing through the messy pile of papers.
"Damn it, Snowflake. I can't find the contract," he muttered, mostly speaking to himself. I felt his hand run through my fur and I leaned towards it, my wolf loving the feel of his rough hands.
No, my name isn't actually Snowflake. It's just my nickname here. They never cared for real names. They gave you a name by your physical traits. I was coined Snowflake because of my pure white fur.
Kendall Gordon was the one who sat filing through the papers. He was one of the three Gordon siblings. They were known for their cold, calculating ways.
Kendall looked like a typical Gordon boy, taking after his father. His black hair was slicked forward and his blue eyes were squinting in concentration. His olive skin was soft and smooth, which had all the girls sighing over him.
He was known for his silence. You might think he was the quietest one in the room, but he was actually the loudest one, mentally. He was the one who's always two steps ahead and you didn't realize it until he was piling the dirt back into the hole you'd sunk into.
But when it was just him and me, he talked freely, muttering to himself and sometimes me. I was the one whom everyone called the "Gordon boy's lap dog" because I was with him at all time.
But I wasn't given a choice.
Over the years I had been here, I had learned what not to do. There was a time when I would growl at anyone and everyone. There was a time when I was punished every day and kept on a thick, silver chain.
Now, I obeyed without hesitation and followed Kendall around silently. I always looked forward because if I looked sideways I might meet the eyes of another wolf, one less fortunate than me. I might me the eyes of the one who belonged to the guards, the ones who had been beaten and broken.
I heard a triumphant hiss, causing me to look up lazily and meet his sparkling, blue eyes. "I found it, Snowflake, right here," he exclaimed, waving around the flimsy paper. I huffed, laying my head in his lap.
His hand ran through my fur, paying extra attention to the spot behind my ears and I closed my eyes, scooting closer to him. I could hear his soft laugh.
"You're like a big cat," he muttered and I huffed again in disagreement. I didn't like being called a cat. I was a wolf, a big wolf. Not some finicky cat. "Let's go to this meeting and get it over with," he sighed, lifting my head from his lap and standing up.
I trailed behind him, walking the halls and rooms with my head held high. Getting caught with a lowered head would earn me a beating because it wasn't manner-like to follow a Gordon without confidence.
Sometimes, I wondered how someone like Kendall, soft on the inside, could own werewolves. He treated us with respect and let the guards do the "taming." He would stop a guard from beating us if it was in his view. Otherwise, he just let it happen. But, Kendall treated me with care, not once laying a hand on me. So why would he feel the need to capture werewolves?
I didn't know why. My guess was maybe he felt he had to. If you were rich and caught without wolves in your halls, then you were whispered about. All the rich had wolves. It was their way of showing their power and dominance. What better way to do that than to control the most dominant creature in the world?
He opened the wooden doors, letting me through first before closing them quietly behind him. He walked to the long, oak table and immediately, everyone stood up and bowed their heads. I followed behind, keeping my eyes forward and on Kendall.
He sat down and made a motion, causing everyone else to sit down. I walked over to his side before sitting down, looking around at everyone briefly.
There were many people here, more than a normal meeting. I made eye contact with almost every one of them because they were all curious about the "Gordon boy's lap dog." I could see jealousy in their eyes, probably wishing their werewolves were as well known as me.
I was well known for my beauty. My thick, white fur caught any eye in a room and it could hold them in a trance. My hazel eyes caused people to want to reach out and touch me, to see if I felt as exotic as I looked. But of course, they couldn't touch me. I was Kendall's property and only his to touch. He made sure everyone knew that when he'd first attained me.
Because I didn't have the standard gray fur, everyone talked. They talked and talked until people started searching and digging for a white wolf. But no one could find a wolf with fur as pure as mine. It drove some nuts because in the eyes of everyone, Kendall was one of the richest in the world for having such a pure wolf.
"I'm glad you could all make it," Kendall started, his voice cold and expressionless. I was always amazed at how fast his voice could change. One second he was laughing softly at me, and the next he was snapping at the help for not knocking on the door.
Kendall's voice went on, and I finally noticed there was another wolf in the room. Occasionally, someone would bring their wolf here and plead for Kendall to set me up in a breeding process with their wolf. Fortunately for me, Kendall would send them off with their tails tucked between their legs. He never took kindly to those requests.
The wolf in the room was definitely male, that much I could tell by his size. He was large, even for a male. He wasn't as stunning as me, but his fur was breathtaking. It was a dark brown color, like soft wood. His gray eyes stood out clearly against his fur. His beauty could be taken as exotic, or it could be taken as too much and he could be considered filth.
He was staring back at me, unblinking. I didn't dare drop my eyes because it was too risky. I could look down for a second and that could be the second a guard saw me. If I wasn't by Kendall's side, they were bound to beat me for my mistake.
So I stared at him and he stared at me until I felt a hand running under my collar. I broke eye contact and looked up at Kendall, whose eyes has softened. "Ready to leave, Snowflake?" he asked, and I rolled out my tongue, causing his laughter to startle the room full of people.
"Mr. Gordon, would you mind talking to me for a second?" a frail voice called and I stood, watching an old man run towards us.
Instinct took over and I lowered down, raising my hackles and snarled at him. The old man's eyes widened, but suddenly, the gray-eyed wolf jumped out of nowhere and stood in front of the man, holding the same stance I was.
"Talon, back!" the old man yelled before he went straight into a coughing fit. The gray-eyed wolf, Talon, stood up and looked back at his master with concern.
"Snow," Kendall said gently and I rose, but stayed standing in front of him. "Are you okay?" Kendall asked out of politeness, his eyes on the old man.
The man smiled weakly before nodding. "I'll be fine if you promise you'll talk to me."
Kendall's face grew expressionless and I knew he was debating on what to do. "What is it you wish to talk about?" he slowly asked the old man.
The old man's eyes flashed with relief, but it was pointless. Kendall might ask you a question that could get your hopes up, but then you might find yourself leaving empty handed.
The man looked down at Talon, running a fur through him before his eyes landed on mine and he smiled brilliantly. "She's beautiful. You take great care of her, don't you?" he asked Kendall, but his eyes stayed on mine.
"Yes, she's treated like a princess," Kendall stated, a pinch of affection in his voice like there always was when he mentioned me.
"I wanted to talk about Talon. May—"
Kendall cut the man off, his voice cold once again. "She is not up for breeding. I don't plan to force her into a breeding program now, or anytime soon." I watched Kendall signal for the guard and the old man started panicking while Talon growled lightly at the approaching figures.
"Wait, that's not what I'm here for! I-I'm dying!" he yelled and Kendall raised a hand, halting the guards.
"And why should I believe you?" Kendall asked, narrowing his eyes. This was a first for Kendall. For once, he wasn't ahead, but behind.
"You just saw me cough, look at me. Do I look like I'm going to live long?" he asked with a laugh that sent him into another coughing fit. The old man was right: he didn't look good. He looked like Death was lingering around him, waiting for the golden opportunity to snatch him up.
"Fine, let's go into my office," Kendall said and started walking with me trailing behind, leading the old man and his wolf.
Chapter Two:
"Talk."
That was all Kendall said, his features holding his likeliness for granting this man what he wanted. The old man's chances were slim, but Kendall had been interested enough to take him to his personal office.
The old man bowed, the thin, white hair on his head becoming translucent in the light. He had seemed relieved the whole walk here, muttering some nonsense to Talon.
Talon was sitting just like I was, but he didn't look comfortable. He obviously wasn't used to the life of a "pampered mutt" like I was. It was almost humorous how much his eyes flickered to the window, probably wondering if he could jump out easily.
The old man cleared his throat slightly before starting, "I just want a favor; that's it." I would've laughed if it were possible. Kendall wasn't known for "giving favors."
"And why should I give you a favor? You haven't done a thing for me but waste my time so far," Kendall replied, leaning forward.
The old man's face crumbled for a second before he slowly replied, "You're right. I haven't done a single thing for you." Then he looked Kendall straight in the eye. "But I could."
Kendall folded his hands together, looking forward. He wasn't one to show easily when you had something he wanted. His eyes were the same shade of empty with every deal he made.
"And what do you have that I could possibly want enough to give you a favor?" he asked. I sighed a little, knowing at this point Kendall was just amusing the old man, keeping him hooked for just a little longer before he let him swim away.
"My name is Conner Chaney," the old man said and Kendall blinked his eyes, the slightest sign of interest in them.
No one knew exactly who Conner was, but we'd all heard of him. He was just a shadow, a mere ten seconds of conversation. But he was widely known because he owned an excessive amount of land for a peasant. He owned land that amounted to three-fourths of Kendall's.
Add Kendall's land to that? Kendall would be feared by everyone who walked this planet by the time he was done adding whatever he pleased to that land.
"But?" Kendall said slowly, letting the old man, Conner, finally ask for his favor.
Conner nearly glowed, seeming elated that Kendall hadn't turned him away. Kendall wasn't one to turn a good deal away if he saw it.
Conner looked down at Talon, who was currently staring at me. It irritated me, but I just stared right back. "I just want you to care for Talon, nothing more," Conner said, affection in his voice.
Talon didn't react, so I assumed Conner had told Talon of his plan long ago. He just kept staring at me. I could feel Kendall's hand running through my fur again, like he usually did every couple of minutes out of habit.
"I think I can arrange for a guard—" Kendall started slowly, but Conner's eyes widened.
"No!" he shouted and I growled slightly, not liking that he raised his voice at Kendall. Talon tensed beside Conner, as ready as I was.
"Calm down. You're making both of them upset," Kendall soothed, his hand running along my snout and I relaxed a little, but not fully.
"You can't give him to a guard. I know how they treat those wolves, how they beat them," Conner said calmly, but the fear was swimming clear as day in his eyes.
"Then how do you suppose I care for him?" Kendall asked with a raised eyebrow and Conner's eyes flickered to mine. I wanted to bare my teeth, but didn't think it was worth the risk.
"Put him by your side with Snowflake."
It was silent. Completely silent. I could tell Conner was nervous with his suggestion, but he was firmly by it. He stood straight, not fidgeting. His eyes, which were previously fearful, were now resolute.
Kendall was still, but relaxed. It didn't look like it, but he was thinking about this. He was considering and deciding, all in this condensed amount of time. But it just looked like he was staring at Conner, nothing more.
Kendall sighed, and I wanted to smirk. Here it goes. Poor Conner.
"Fine."
Chapter Three:
I nearly snapped my neck with how swiftly my head turned towards Kendall. I couldn't believe what I'd just heard.
He'd agreed to Conner's deal.
Kendall didn't look down at me, didn't run his hand through my fur. No, his eyes were on Conner. I wanted to kill Conner, just to end this whole deal. This was unreasonable. Kendall already had a wolf by his side, why would he need another one?
"But he won't be by my side."
I relaxed, wanting to grin. Kendall was mine, not Talon's. He had his chance with Conner. I wasn't letting Talon take Kendall away from me just because his master was dying. That was his problem, not mine.
Conner's face crinkled with confusion. I was as confused as he was, but happy with Kendall's decision.
Talon was just sitting, occasionally looking up at Conner when his emotions spiked. Right now, Conner was starting to become wary again and Talon's fur was standing on edge.
"I'm not the only one who needs protection." Kendall said, a smirk on his face. Whatever his offer was, he seemed pleased to come up with it.
"But who would Talon be assigned to?" Conner asked, seeming disappointed. He was smart, knowing there was a slim chance of Talon staying unbruised if Kendall didn't take him in.
"You see, last month my Snowflake got shot. I'm sure you heard about that." Kendall murmured, looking down at me. Affection in his voice and eyes. I met his eyes, nudging his shoulder affectionately making him smile a little.
"Yes, I heard. I was surprised that she lived." Conner said slowly, not sure where this was going.
I had been shot last month during a ball. The shot had been for Kendall, but luckily I saw the man in the crowd pull out the gun. I had tackled Kendall to the ground and the bullet had tore straight into my chest. Kendall later told me my heart had stopped a few times.
"After, I realized how much I needed her. I'm not quite ready for another wolf, not anytime soon anyways." He said, ruffling my fur and I stood straighter. He was finally going to reject Conner.
About time.
"So why not get a protector for my Snowflake?" He asked and I blinked as it slowly dawned on me what was happening.
He wanted Talon to protect me.
Both Talon and I snorted before baring out teeth at one another. Neither of us seemed pleased with this idea. The day hell froze over was the day I was taking a protector.
"Snowflake." Kendall said softly, a small warning in his voice. I closed my mouth, but my whole body held tense.
"A wolf protector for a wolf?" Conner asked, seeming to relax. He shouldn't be relaxing. If Talon became my protector I was going to end his life quickly, snapping his neck.
"I know, it's not the tradition. But I'm not going to lose Snow anytime soon because people disagree with my ruling. I'm less likely to lose her if while she's protecting me, she has someone watching over her." Kendall explained, locking his hands together.
Conner didn't speak for a second, seeming to take this in before he slowly nodded his head. "Okay, I don't see why not. He would be treated similar to Snowflake?"
"Similar yes, but not the same. He'll be on a lower level than Snow, but higher the a guard dog." Kendall reasoned and I winced slightly at 'guard dog', as did Talon. We weren't dogs, not even close.
"But he would be taken care of by you?" Conner pressed, seeming to think that part was important.
"No, not by me. I only take care of Snowflake, no one else. But he would be taken care of by a close friend of mine." Kendall said and I relaxed further.
Talon wasn't going to be Kendall's protector. I was okay right now, as long as that was clear. Later, I would deal with the fact he was going to be my protector.
"Snowflake is by your side at all times. Why does she need a protector?" Conner asked, still confused.
Kendall's hand was still running through my fur and at this point, I was leaning against his hand, rubbing it back. "If this happens, then she's allowed to roam freely. She won't have to be by my side constantly." He explained and Conner nodded.
"Okay, can we talk into more detail in private, without the wolves?" Conner asked and I growled lightly. I wasn't leaving Kendall alone with this stranger.
Talon stood up, growling louder causing me to raise my hackles and growl back. We both stood like that, waiting for the first move.
Kendall snapped his finger and I went quiet, hating that I did. But I had been trained well, unlike Talon who was still growling.
"Talon." Conner said and Talon quieted, still baring his teeth slightly at me. "Maybe it's best we talk in private." Kendall agreed slowly, frowning at me with disapprovement. I just huffed.
Kendall then call in a guard who took us out of the room, leaving me alone with Talon.
Chapter Four:
I would've left him behind, but I couldn't. It seemed every time I tried walking away he'd follow without hesitation or struggle.
It was very frustrating.
So I ended up walking out the castle, to the edge of the forest. I did nothing but sit there, looking and wishing.
I could've ran right now, no one was expecting it. I could run and run and run until I was home. If be free of a master and I'd be drunk once again with my friends.
But I didn't run.
What was stopping me, I wasn't sure. I glanced at the castle and blinked slowly when I saw Kendall staring out the window. He was looking directly down at me.
I knew he was wondering if I'd run. It was obvious in his eyes, all there. But I just looked away from him and back at the forest.
Suddenly I heard a twig crunch under pressure and I whirled around, baring my teeth only to be disappointed. It was only Talon.
I uncurled my lip, huffing as I turned back around. He was pointlessly following me. It was clear I didn't want it need him.
But apparently that wasn't too clear to Kendall since he was up there, talking about making Talon my protector. Didn't he realize what a mistake that would be?
My ears flicked as more twigs and some leaves crunched. Talon was by my side now, sitting there. He wasn't looking directly at me, but from the corner of his eye. Two could play at that game.
Turns out two couldn't because the other person needed patience. A skill that I lacked. So I stared at him head on, waiting for a reaction. But he didn't even twitch his eyes.
I decided to imagine his human. All werewolves had not just their wolf, but also their human. They lived harmoniously, usually without trouble. But there were those who had trouble, their wolves taking complete control and destroying full villages.
They were known as The Corrupted. The Corrupted were highly looked down upon and you were too if you were known to associate with one. Luckily, most of them went into deep hiding, deeper than a regular werewolf would go. Because not only were they being hunted down by humans, but by werewolves as well.
Talon was still looking straight ahead, but I swear he was smirking. Arrogant wolf. He was probably worse as a human.
Now I was the one smirking. He was probably one of those gorgeous god-like guys. I assumed so from his size and his stance. He was larger than the average male wolf and his stance was perfect, showing he didn't play the submissive game.
His eyes would be grey, just like his wolf. He was probably a heart breaker, not having ever actually committed to a serious relationship. He'd smile that signature smile and have girls running in arms only to toss them away after a week.
Suddenly Talon stood up, shook himself before walking into the forest.
Chapter Five:
I didn't know what to do. I mean, it's not every day a wolf's stupid enough to walk into the forest unprotected. I might have made that mistake once, but I sure as hell wasn't making it again.
But Talon, like the idiot he obviously is, kept walking. He didn't even glance back or hesitate. He was just surging forward, getting farther and farther.
So did I let him go further and get captured? Or did I save his little wolf behind and steer him back here? I looked up, waiting for Kendall to see me and shake his head, but he wasn't there. He was probably too busy finalizing his deal. So I was on my own.
I huffed before darting into the forest, the atmosphere trembling with tension already. The light was sucked away by the trees, making the forest dark and ominous. I nearly turned back then, deciding it was his own damn fault if he got caught and died.
But then he seemed to laugh as he looked back, taunting me. My eyes narrowed before he dashed off and I dashed after. Turns out they hadn't fully cleansed me of my old self. Because only she would be so daring as to dash after a stranger into a forest without a care.
He suddenly picked up speed and I growled lowly before darting like a bullet. I was right at his heels. I lower my head, nipping at his heels causing him to growl and tumble down.
I almost tumbled down with him, but I skidded to a painful stop before showing him all my teeth in a wolf-like grin. He wasn't as good as he thought he was.
He was looking at me with hate filled eyes as he shook himself off and growled at me. I just bounced in a circle around him, teasing him. He suddenly flashed out, tackling me roughly to the ground.
I yelped as I slammed into the ground, twig snapping and poking at me. His teeth found their way around my neck and he kept them there. I was now trapped.
Maybe I'd underestimated him a little.
His teeth loosed, nipping my ear. My nose wrinkled and I growled lightly causing him to almost laugh. His nose ran along mine and I growled louder, not liking this. But then the magical light-bulb went off.
I stopped growling and I felt him hesitate, awaiting another reaction from me. When he didn't get one he went back to affectionately running his snout along mine. When I nuzzled him back, my own snout running along his he hesitated once again, seeming surprised.
I kept doing it until he relaxed again, taking the bait. He shifted, his right foot moving closer to me. My tongue flicked out, licking his nose and he huffed but licked my snout back affectionately.
Had I not been trying to hurt him, I might actually enjoy this. Wolves were creature of affection and we tended to crave it more than humans, wanting it even from strangers. So doing something like this wasn't uncommon in the wolf world.
His right leg was right near my mouth. I reached out and clamped my mouth around it, ignoring his yelping and growling. I focused on the coppery taste of his blood. I bit down until my teeth nicked a bone. That's when his yelps really started.
I was tempted to bite down further, but I let go, jumping away. I back away, ignoring his glares. He was limping, but he'd be fine. He was a big boy.
He growled, started towards me but I just wanted to laugh. What did he think he would do when he couldn't even walk right. He seemed to realize this because he suddenly stopped, sitting right there. I smirked, circling him before sitting beside him.
He was looking at me, just staring. I wanted to stick out my tongue but decided that wasn't appropriate. Not when he had just been giving me death glares.
Suddenly a twig snapped and we were both looking around. But before we could do anything the air made whistling sounds. I felt something prick me before I saw the dart in Talon's neck and I blacked out.
