Chapter 8 - Tryouts and Bets
Ivy looked at the noticeboard in the Ravenclaw Common Room and grinned.
"Roger Davis is holding Quidditch Tryouts!!" Someone said excitedly.
"Sign me up!" Ivy grabbed her quill and wrote down her name.
"Let me guess, Chaser?" Marvelle asked.
"Yep! Why don't you guys tryout?"
"I hate flying..." Maria said slowly.
"You're afraid of heights?"
"Quite possibly."
"Oh well."
"And besides, I never get Quidditch." Marvelle stated. "It doesn't make sense-"
"Well you see Ms Shields." Ivy started, in a very posh accent. She changed her appearance to match Madam Hooch's, the teacher that taught all the first years how to ride broomsticks.
Marvelle groaned. "Oh please don't-"
"There are seven players on each team. Three Chasers, two Beaters, one Keeper and one Seeker. The Chasers job - that's me - try grab the Quaffle, which is the reddish brown ball, and throw it vinto one of the three hoops on the opponent's side. With me so far?"
"I didn't ask for an explanation but yeah-"
"Okay good. The Keeper, tries to block the Quaffle from going through the hoops. The Beaters try to stop the Bludgers - which are the two jet black iron balls that fly around like they're high on firewhiskey - from hitting their teammates and aim the Bludgers to the other team. Which the Weasley twins like to do a lot since I still have a bruise on my shoulder-"
"What?!"
"Nothing. So I've done the Chasers, Keepers, Beaters oh and of course the Seekers. The Seeker, has to catch the Snitch the small, golden ball with wings. Once they've caught the Snitch, the game ends and the team wins 150 points. They would most likely win too. Now do you know what Quidditch is?"
"I always knew what Quidditch is-"
"But do you understand it more?"
"A bit-"
"Good." Ivy changed her appearance back to normal, but instead changed her hair to be dark blue with light blue ends.
"Now I'm hungry. Let's go." Maria said and walked out of the Common Room.
"Five sickles she either trips, bumps into someone or breaks something." Ivy whispered to Marvelle as they walked behind Maria.
"Deal."
"I can hear you. You know that?" Maria stated, turning around to face them but still continued walking backwards. "Five sickles that Marvelle complains-" She bumped into someone and almost fell down. The fifth year boy in Gryffindor turned around.
"Hey watch where you're going!" He yelled.
"Sorry." Maria smiled sheepishly and walked back to Marvelle and Ivy. Marvelle handed Ivy five sickles.
"Told you. Anyway, what were you saying?" Ivy asked Maria.
"Oh yeah. Five sickles that when we walk into Transfiguration today, Marvelle will complain about how dirty the desks are."
"Deal."
"Hey! Okay, that was one time." Marvelle stated. Ivy and Maria raised an eyebrow. "It may have happened twice... three times-"
"More then three times."
"Well whatever, they're always dirty. Who cleans them anyway?"
"People who get detention." Maria said and she and Marvelle looked at Ivy.
"Why are you looking at me?" Ivy questioned. "I've only cleaned them once."
"Sure." Marvelle nodded slightly and rolled her eyes. "Fine, five sickles Ivy complains about how annoying the Weasley twins are since we have Transfiguration with Gryffindor."
"Deal." Maria said as they walked to the Great Hall and sat at the Ravenclaw Table.
"Hey! It's not my fault they're annoying!"
"You can just give me the five sickles now." Marvelle stated, grabbing some toast and butter.
"You said in Transfiguration."
After breakfast, they headed to the Transfiguration classroom. Ivy and Maria waited as they sat down at a desk. Marvelle bit her lip and wiped a bit of dirt from the desk with her finger.
"You okay Marvelle?" Ivy asked, grinning at her expression.
"You do know that if I complain you'll loose money." Marvelle said, looking around.
"True. I'll shut up now."
"But..." Marvelle looked at the desk. "Oh fine! Sorry Ivy, but yes these desks are very very dirty! I might as well get detention and clean this place up myself!"
Ivy handed Maria the five sickles.
"Thank you." Maria said in a sing-song voice.
"Shut up. Marvelle, you are one special child."
The rest of the class walked in and Ivy noticed the Weasley twins sit behind them. She prayed that they would not bother her at all.
McGonagall walked to the front and started explaining how to turn a teapot to a tortoise. Ivy listened very carefully, she loved Transfiguration and was considered rather good at it. Well better at Transfiguration then she was in Potions.
After a while, they were each given the task of trying to follow the steps very carefully in their books. Ivy looked at the teapot in front of her and grabbed her book. She started reading and ignored all the people waving their wands madly at the teapots.
"Potter. Hey Potter, Potter. Potter. Potter-"
"What do you want?!" She turned around furiously, glaring at the redhead twin. He put his hands in the air and rolled his eyes.
"You're meant to be doing your work. Not reading."
"Look George-"
"Fred."
"Whatever! I am doing my work! It's you who's not doing your work."
Fred frowned and discreetly pushed the Exploding Snap cards off his desk, making George frown. He grabbed his wand and pointed it at the teapot.
"I am doing my work. See?" He waved his wand and the spell hit the teapot. The teapot turned green and grew four short legs. "Huh..."
"Nice try Weasley-"
"Like you can do better."
Ivy grinned. "Is that a challenge? You're on." She turned back to face her teapot and grabbed her wand. She thought for a moment before waving her wand and said the spell. Her teapot transfigured to a shell with a handle and spout.
Fred laughed. "At least mine has legs."
"At least mine has a shell." They glared at each other then turned back to their teapots. They both grabbed their wands and immediately started waving it furiously, determined to beat the other.
"Um... What are you doing?" Maria asked Ivy, who only kept her eyes on the teapot.
"Work." She answered, before saying the spell multiple times.
"That furiously? You know it's not going to work-"
"Well I'll make it work before Weasley does."
"What?" Maria looked at her before looking at Fred, who also had the determined look on his face. She rolled her eyes before turning to her work.
No one had been able to complete the task yet. Some people kept working, while others decided to give up. George had his head on the desk as he watched Fred turn his teapot green. Angelina Johnson and Alicia Spinnet continued working with a bored expression. And Marvelle started wiping the dirt off her desk with her finger.
Ivy waved her wand and said the spell once again and her teapot transfigured into a turtle. "Yes! Ha!" She turned over to Fred and grinned. Fred raised an eyebrow.
"That's a turtle. Not a tortoise." He stated. She scoffed.
"Same thing! It doesn't matter."
"Yes it does." He grinned at her, making Ivy glare at him.
"No it doesn't."
"Yes it does!"
"No it doesn't!"
"Yes it does!"
"No it doesn't!"
"Yes it does!"
"No it doesn't! Look, Professor!" Ivy put her hand up and McGonagall walked over to her.
"Yes Ms Potter?" The Professor asked, leaning over the desk.
"I turned the teapot into a-"
"A turtle."
"Well yes..."
"Ms Potter, that's not a tortoise." Fred grinned and Ivy's jaw dropped.
"But it doesn't matter... right?"
"It does matter very much."
"I would say I told you so..." Fred started, leaning forward towards Ivy, whose hair began slowly turning to a mixture of red and orange. "But Professor McGonagall's already doing that for me."
"Mr Weasley, continue doing your work."
"Of course Professor." He grinned at Ivy, who glared furiously at him in response.
The bell rang and McGonagall gave them homework before dismissing them. Maria, Marvelle and Ivy stood up and walked out of the classroom.
"So... this is the part where she starts complaining." Marvelle stated innocently. Maria nodded in agreement and they both looked at Ivy, whose hair was still yellow and red.
"It's not my fault he's annoying. It would help if he didn't bother me!" Ivy yelled. "I would've been able to turn the bloody teapot into a tortoise! And I wasn't working?! Yeah right, he was playing Exploding Snap with George!"
Maria handed Marvelle five sickles and Ivy looked at them.
"Okay, they're annoying. I can't wait until the Gryffindor vs Ravenclaw Quidditch Match-"
"That is if you make the team first." They turned around and saw the twins. Ivy sighed with annoyance.
"Hi Marvelle, Maria, Ivy." George greeted.
"Hi George!" Marvelle replied, smiling.
"How do you two do that?" Ivy asked them, pointing at the two.
"Do what?"
"How are you like that? You're so polite to each other-"
"You and Fred should try it sometime." George stated. Fred and Ivy rolled their eyes, before glaring at each other.
"Yeah... no, how do you know you two are on the team?"
"Probably because Oliver Wood told us." Fred answered in a duh tone. "Have you guys had tryouts yet?"
"This Saturday. And do you guys even have tryouts?"
"No, because we were all on the team from last year."
"Didn't your Seeker leave?"
The twins grinned suddenly. "Yeah, we already have a new Seeker."
Her eyes widened. "Really? Who is it?!"
"You'll find out." George said. "We're not allowed to tell you, because he is really good too. He's better then our brother Charlie, and that's saying something."
"Okay at least we know it's a he. Now who is it?!"
"We can't tell you!" Fred exclaimed, grinning like an idiot.
"Please tell me! You would tell Marvelle!"
"No we wouldn't."
"You could tell Marvelle..."
"Yeah you could tell me." Marvelle said, moving closer to them. "Because you wouldn't tell her-"
"Hey!"
"What? It's true. So... who is he? What year is he in?"
"We can't tell you that either." George added.
"Oh my Merlin just tell us!!" Ivy said with annoyance.
"But we can't." Fred said again. The two grinned at the girls glaring at them. "Now see you two later, hope Ravenclaw has a better team this year!"
"Hey! Ravenclaw does have a better team then your small, little-" The twins had already walked off. Ivy sighed with annoyance.
"Welcome to another year of tension and competitiveness between Ivy Potter and Fred Weasley." Maria rolled her eyes and sighed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ivy grabbed her broom and raced to the Great Hall, after realising that she had slept in on the Saturday morning. She ran to the Ravenclaw Table and sat down next to Maria quickly, who jumped in surprise.
"Hi! What are we eating?" Ivy said cheerfully to them and grabbed some toast. Marvelle and Maria glanced at each other.
"Are you okay?" Marvelle asked.
"I'm fine! Why?" Ivy started fixing her hair, which was flying everywhere.
"You seem awfully cheerful..."
"Yeah so? I'm just glad that tryouts are today-"
"You sure that's it? It seems like you had chocolate before you came here." Maria added.
"I don't eat as much chocolate as my Godfather does. Be grateful for that."
"Alright then."
"Now I'm hungry, let's eat." Ivy started eating some toast and fried eggs. "Besides, it will another year where Ravenclaw will beat those Gryffindors-"
"Gryffindor won last year..." Marvelle reminded, frowning.
"Well the Gryffindor Seeker left, right? Let's see if this mysterious new one is better."
Marvelle and Maria nodded. Ivy looked at her watch and stood up.
"Tryouts start soon!" She quickly drank her Pumpkin Juice and ran out of the Great Hall.
"Wait! Ivy!" Marvelle yelled after her. She held up Ivy's broom before looking at Maria. "Let's go." Maria nodded and the two ran after Ivy.
They ran through the corridors and to the Quidditch Pitch as fast as the could. Maria was faster then Marvelle, who was carrying the Cleansweep Eleven. A girl was walking past them, unaware of the two girls.
"Maria!" Marvelle yelled but soon Maria had collided with the blonde haired girl. Both screamed and fell to the ground.
"I am so sorry-" Maria looked at the Slytherin girl. "Wait no, you should watch where you're going!" Marvelle rolled her eyes and helped Maria up.
"I'm sorry, it's all-" The girl looked up. "Hey, its Marvelle and Maria right?"
"Yeah... oh hey Jordan!" Marvelle said. "How are you?"
"I'm good. Where's Ivy?"
"She's at Quidditch tryouts."
"She left her broom." Maria added, pointing to Ivy's broom. Jordan nodded. "And we might go and watch her for a bit."
"Cool. Can I come?"
"Of course no-"
"Of course!" Marvelle said quickly, shooting Maria a look. "Of course you can. We better get going."
"Okay, thanks!" Jordan smiled and they all ran to the Quidditch Pitch, though Maria didn't look so pleased that Jordan was there.
Ivy ran to Roger Davis, the Ravenclaw Quidditch Captain as he was calling out the names of people who trying out.
"Ivy Potter!" He called out.
"I'm here!" Ivy panted, shooting her hand in the air.
"Glad you could make it. Now do you have your broom?" Davis asked, looking at her.
"Of course I have my-" She looked around and her eyes widened. She swore loudly. "I had my broom."
"Where is it?"
"In the Great Hall..." Davis sighed with annoyance and Ivy smiled innocently.
"Go get it. And be quick."
"Yep!" She ran to the edge of the Pitch where she spotted Marvelle, Maria and Jordan.
"Ivy!" Marvelle shouted, holding the broom in the air. Ivy ran over to them and sighed with relief.
"Oh thank Merlin!" She said. "You're a lifesaver Marvelle. Seriously, I owe you one."
"Okay, now go!" Ivy smiled and ran back to Davis.
"You got it?" Davis asked once he saw the girl.
"Yep! So whose trying out first?"
"First, whoever are trying out for the Chaser position step forward." Ivy and a few girls and boys stepped forward. Davis started explaining the basics of Quidditch, earning some bored sighs and eye rolls from the other players.
"Now you'll be split into two teams." Davis stated. "On the first team, Potter, Stertton and Burrow, and on the second team, Belby, Hillard and Hiker. You'll be playing against each other. Whichever Chasers gets the most points will be accepted on the team. Just because your team 'wins' doesn't mean the whole team will get on the team. I am looking for individuals with talent." They nodded and Davis held up the Quaffle. "Now, get ready."
Ivy nodded and mounted her broom. Everyone kicked off and faced the opposing team, gripping the broom handle tightly.
"3, 2, 1... Go!" Davis threw the Quaffle in the air and Ivy raced to the Quaffle. She grabbed it and felt the wind rush through her hair as she flew to the Quidditch hoops on the opposite side.
