• Chapter 4: Talking through the door •

I lied down the bed and let my drowsiness take in, then I fell into a deep slumber.

I woke up from the delicious aroma lingering inside the room as it drove me right up, removing the cozy stack of blankets that were tucked by my sides.

I checked my watch, unsure of what time was it.

I didn't slept that long,

I only had an hour of sleep.

Sliding down the bed, I found a plate of butterscotch pie on the floor with a knife and fork beside it. I reached for the scrumptious pie and there, a note lay beside it. It read.

Dear, Child

It looks like you've fallen asleep waiting for my pie, I hope you'd enjoy the pie I made. I am at the ruins checking the puzzles, please don't try to come there, its too dangerous to wander alone. Please tell me your suggestions and comments about my pie later when I come back, I would really appreciate your honest judgement! ^^

With love,
Toriel

I ate half of the sliced pie, as the filling oozed in my mouth. It was so delicious and tasteful, that words cannot describe

Its....

its...

INDESCRIBABLE!

I went to the kitchen to place my leftovers in the fridge and it was surprisingly empty.

I skipped along the way going to my room that's when I heard a set of knocks.

Huh?

I listened, the knock came again, with a rhythmic tap in it. I leaned my head down the floorboards.

It sounds like it came from downstairs.

I walked down the stairs, curiosity getting the most of me again.

I hope Toriel wouldn't mind me exploring the house.

I walked further down the purple hallways till the knock was getting louder as I encountered a tall purple door.

It creaked as I opened it, I took a step and walked further ahead, all ears on the knocking sound.

Purple

Purple

And more purple

Wow, this sure is one long hallway.

I found another purple door, but this one was enormous, more enormous than my bed and it is chained with a big padlock with old rusty chains.

Why would Toriel lock herself in this house if there's much to see outside..?

Is she keeping herself out or is she keeping herself in...?

The knocking continued, a little softer than before.

It might've heard my footsteps.

"Hello?" I nervously asked and there was a shuffle of feet.

"you were supposed to say who's there." a manly voice echoed, his voice was deep enough to send me the shivers and the creeps.

I think this is a bad idea,

What if this guy only means trouble?

I might've revealed something to him that shouldn't be done so just by knowing of my presence.

This guy could've been one of the reasons why Toriel locked herself up.

Keeping her away from company and connections.

But the question is

Why...?

"ya know, it would be rude to leave a friend hanging." he chuckled from the other side.

Not knowing what to do or how to respond, I repeated the words he wanted me to say.

"U-umm, w-who's t-there?" I stuttered, still keeping my guard from this suspicious stranger.

"dishes"

"Dishes who?" I played along.

I waited for his response but there was a pause.

Huh...

Might've only been my-

"dishes a very bad joke."

I didn't know what came over me but I laughed and chortled, instantly realizing it was a knock knock joke.

I wouldn't normally laugh at a joke since all the one's I've heard before are pretty corny and flat.

Its the first time I've appreciated one.

He hummed in appreciation from hearing my hearty laugh which he soon joined in.

"man, your the best audience I've had so far." he commented and chuckled afterwards.

Feeling great to make him happy and appreciated, I felt no reason to fear him at all.

With the way he started this conversation, he seems to be a friendly guy.

But its not enough to clear hints of my doubts and suspicion about him.

Especially after that encounter I had with Flowey.

"Who may I ask are y-you?" I asked, cautious of fumbling over my words but I failed.

It came out like a stutter.

"oh sorry, heh.. guess I forgot to introduce myself, The name's Sans, just your average lazy-boned skeleton." he casually brought in, not noticing the nervousness in my voice.

A skeleton...??

Intrigued by his peculiar charisma, I opened my mouth to say a few words but none came out.

I was quite intimidated.

Is he playing tricks on me?

"bout you, m'lady?" He asked, popping the last word which was laced with

Humour..??

Politeness..?

I don't really know, but I found myself to grumble lowly from the way he addressed me.

I don't want someone to call me with those kinds of nicknames, The last person who called me that ended up bedridden.

Covering up my slight annoyance, I cleared my throat.

"My name's F-frisk, The.....umm....human." My voice wavered as the cold wind slid past the door and brushed my legs.

"a human eh? Its been awhile since I've eaten one..." his voice fell flat yet deep.

My eyes widened as my heart pounded after what he said, next was my legs wobbled so suddenly.

E A T E N?!

He was astounded of my silence which by then he chuckled. "kidding! Man, serious are ya!"

"sorry if I'd rattled your bones, I'm just literally bone this way." he joked further, earning nothing but a small smirk that crept on my lips as if I knew where this conversation is leading us to.

"Oh? I think they just don't have the guts to meet a skeleton such as yourself." I grinned, proud of the joke that left him speechless.

After all these years of cheesiness without a chuckle or a smile from anyone, I guess I finally did improved because I heard him stifle a soft snigger.

"pretty much, since nobody wants to get chilled to the bone out'ta here." he chimed in, the humour on his voice still evident.

"It wouldn't be much of a problem for you since nothing gets underneath your skin, bet that makes you a numbskull?" I rolled my eyes of all the unbelievable corny skeleton jokes I pulled off from who knows where.

We both shared a complimentary laugh after that light conversation of,

Well

Skele-puns and jokes.

It feels great to talk with someone else other than Toriel.

He seemed to be enjoying the company just as Toriel met me.

Taking conversations in a subtle yet amusing way with humour, just like how a friend would do if he crossed paths with an old friend.

Meeting Toriel and Sans made me feel welcomed and wanted, as if they're willing to open their home to a total stranger.

Its rare to everyone nowadays, most likely humans.

Its rare to encounter hospitable people in these changing days.

It makes me believe that monsters aren't half-bad as I would've imagined.

"Say" I started in a gruff voice.

"Mind if I ask, why were you knocking earlier?" I raised a brow, curious whether he wanted to visit Toriel or something.

"practicing knock knock jokes, that's all. 'kinda bored of being bonely outta here in the cold." he said as I slid into a sitting position, leaning onto the door.

The doors and the chains shook with vigor from the blast of icy wind by the other side. It blew underneath the slit between the door and the cold floor, which made me cling into my knees and shiver into a ball.

"O-oh" I shuddered.

"Don't you have a family? Or some friends to share your humour with?" I politely asked.

He chuckled and sighed for a brief moment.

"i have a cool brother, alright -- some really great friends." he added after a few shuffling and a soft thud. The door lunged forward with the effort as he seemingly leaned from the other side.

"and...there's...nothing more."

From the tone of his voice, it seems like he's uncomfortable of talking about his life. He didn't even answered my questions wholeheartedly.

He sounded depressed and full of pain.

So he has a brother and some friends...

But does he have any parents...?

"So...umm...where are your parents..?"

"not really up for that topic, pal." he grumbled in a low voice, more like a warning.

"S-sorry"

I should've held back that last question.
Asking him further seems to upset him as he tries to dodge it.

"don't be sorry, ya did nothing wrong" he said flatly.

"so, 'bout ya?"

"M-me..?" I stuttered blankly.

Where would I even start? A lot of things happened for me in just a span of one month.

"Well, I umm...I'm an orphan, my parents died a month ago in a fire accident and I was just discharged from the hospital.- Supposedly not if it weren't for that dog chase" I told the tale further while bearing the locket in my hands, trying to hold back the stray tears.

I sniffled once and wiped the sadness away. Thankfully, Sans didn't hear or noticed.

If I revealed this to someone face to face, I would've gone restless.

"sorry for your loss, I'm sure they're happy to where they are now." he said softly.

"Haha...Thanks, its fine." I lightly chuckled and smiled weakly. Though the painful images of the accident were still fresh in my memory, the thought of it starts to ebb away- Finding the comfort of sharing these thoughts to another.

"Honestly, I don't remember much about my past. Its quite fuzzy." I admitted, which strangely earned a few minutes of silence from him. His audible breathing taking hold of the cold atmosphere.

Did I say something wrong?

"Sans..? You still in there...?"

"o-oh! Hehe I'm still bones, yeah." he joked which made me snort.

He really never loses his Sans of humour, does he?

He remained silent than ever thereafter. Maybe he's in deep thought...?

But about what..?

"kid, how young are ya?" he abruptly asked.

"14, 14 in a half to be exact." I answered, confusion in my voice.

"Why do you ask?"

Silence...

Did I say something wrong to make him this speechless?

"n-nothing, I just thought you're older than I thought you might've been." he casually brought in, shaking my curiosity away.

"Pftt! I'm not that old, how old do you think I was?" I chortled as I tipped my head down, enough to make my bangs cover my cold face.

"around 30"

"Pfft! Do I sound like an old lady to you? and yet you call me a kid." I laughed.

"yep, its hard to make out your voice here in the cold. Also, your stuttering and shuddering in there." he explained which caught my cheeks to flush a bit red in embarrassment.

Chuckling to himself he said. "there's no need to be embarrassed about."

More tint of deep red

"welp, I can't blame you. The icy winds of Snowdin are quite strong today." he murmured to himself, the name Snowdin catching my attention.

"Snowdin? Is that what your place is called? The name's pretty hilarious." I snorted.

"aight, as the name states. We always get Snowdin our houses." he then cleared his throat to explain further.

"that's just one of the many names of the different places here in the underground, there's the waterfalls and hotlands, and-- I guess I don't have to explain why they got the names. They're basically self explanatory."

"Tell me!" I blurted, wanting to hear more from him like a child eager for a bedtime story.

"fine, if you insist." he sighed in a good way.

"so umm...the waterfalls has a lot of water caverns, it has a calm atmosphere and it's shrouded with a lot of echo flowers."

"Echo flowers?" I asked, leaning my head onto the door, listening intently.

"yep, they're blue luminescent flowers that lights the whole place up, they also repeat the last words they hear." he explained.

"Whoa...that's amazing." I marveled.

He hummed, agreeing to me.

All those things he said...

It perked up my interest in a blink.

So there's really a lot more to see behind these doors...

I wanted to see the Waterfalls and Hotland rather than hear them vaguely from words alone, as well as where Sans lives.

I wanted to meet him in person and this cool brother he has.

But only if Toriel allows me to...

She's the only person I know I can trust, I'm still unsure of what to make out of this guy.

The cold wind continued to hit the doors hard onto the other side, bustling to get its way in.

I shivered, grasping my hands to build up warmth but failed miserably.

"My child! I'm home!" Toriel's sweet voice called.

That rings the bell.

"ya better go wrap yourself up in there, pal. Staying here wouldn't be a great idea." he suggested, followed by the crunching of snow as his shadow slowly left the small gap between the doors and the floor.

I stood up too, about to head upstairs but a thought nicked me.

"Thanks, Sans." I whispered to the door.

"for what?"

"For making my day." I smiled. Before he could say something Toriel called for me again.

"Bye!"

"see ya soon." I heard him say.

I ran through the hallways as fast as my legs could take me and whipped up the stairs to the living room.

Toriel was sitting on her comfy chair while reading a book with her glasses on, She held her book down by the time she saw me.

I was expecting for her to ask where I had been but instead she asked me.

"So, how's the pie child?" She smiled, awaiting an answer.

"It was incredibly delicious mom!" I yelled with excitement but immediately shut my mouth with my hands, realizing my mistake.

"Oh, sorry Toriel, I-i didn't mean to call you-

"Hush my child, its alright if you'd like to call me mom." She flashed a warm smile, which melted my heart.

My legs ran fro and found my arms wrapped around her furry figure, exhilarated to give a hug.

"Thanks mom."

"Your welcome." She returned the hug but parted away for a few moments.

Now's my time to ask.

"Toriel may I-

"Oh! Would you like to hear these amazing facts about snails? I'm sure you've never heard these interesting facts yet." she interrupted, not minding what I was about to say.

The calm look in her eyes pleaded me to listen.

Maybe this isn't the right time.

"Sure I'd love too!" I giggled as I plopped down beside her, listening to every word she says.

I continued to listen, but the view of the basement stairs caught my view and started to fuzz my head with the encounter with Sans from earlier.

Strange...

I felt something odd while I was talking to Sans awhile ago.

Not the doubtful feeling but a familiar feeling.

More like deja vou

Have we possibly met before..?

His voice sounds oddly familiar but I kept on denying it since its impossible for him to survive on the surface.

Am I missing something here..?

"Frisk..?" Toriel snapped me away from my deep thoughts.

"Oh, what was that again?" I smiled, apologetically.

I think I was just imagining things..

I brushed those thoughts and diverted my attention to listen to Toriel again.
