Focus on The Now

Jimmy's Perspective-

Growing up, I've always been told that being innocent was a dream.

Going to camps with older kids seemed so cool! But I was always so confused at why they told me they wished they could be my age.

Even my older sister would tell me she wished she could be. as happy as I was.

My happiness, however, comes at a price.

Ever since I was little, I struggled with paying attention in class. And while I can forget bad things easily, I failed classes.

I never understood why until my parents took me to the doctor, and I got prescribed medication to help me focus.

I didn't know it at the time, but I had ADHD, and it was bad. I even got held back from going into the smarter classes because I had so much trouble focusing.

It was a struggle to try and come out on top and convince the teachers that I belonged in the higher levels, but by middle school I had made it.

And by that time, I had lost my innocence.

Not in that way (get your mind out of the gutters) but in the realization that happy endings don't always exist.

-

"You're going to a different middle school?" I tilted my head as I spoke to my best friend.

"Yeah...something dumb with the zoning." He muttered.

"But...but we're supposed to be going to the same school until college! We're always supposed to be together..." I frowned, my voice growing weak as I lost my strong tone.

"Jimmy, I'm sorry. I really do wish they'd let me go to the other school." Tango said and I glanced down.

"We'll still be friends, I promise." Tango reassured me, and I finally looked him in the eyes.

"Promise?" I whispered and Tango nodded.

"I promise, Jim-Jam."

I giggled at the familiar nickname and Tango lightly punched my shoulder.

"Besides, I couldn't miss your moments where you show the world how much of a nerd you really are." Tango teased me and I laughed.

"Shut up!" I shoved him teasingly and Tango chuckled.

"You know, I'm really glad you got that medication. It seems to help you a lot."

I felt my smile falter a bit and I nodded, quickly covering it with a giggle.

"Yeah, it...it helps me become smarter in a way."

-

I had no idea at the time, but that moment sparked a deep-rooted problem in my heart.

The medication is just to help me focus.

It doesn't give me insane smarts or else everyone would take it. All it does is help me pay attention and help me prove how smart I really am.

However, being ten, I had no idea.

And it led me down to a bad thought.
