Chapter VI: Fractured

It has been quite a few hours since the sun has set. The moon is now up high in the sky, shining its dull light onto Earth. The students parked their cars in the back of the school to sort of keep their cars away from anyone else's eyes.

Once they parked, they all stepped out. A cold rush of wind blew by. They could hear the sounds of leaves rustling and dead branches clattering as the wind bustles around.

"It is so damn cold." Scarlet scrunched her shoulders to keep warm. She forgot to dress warm for the occasion.

"Should have put on a coat." Lincoln jested, lacing it in a bit of sarcasm. Scarlet scoffed annoyingly and ignored Lincoln.

When the group gathered. They huddled a little to share their warmth on the cold night. Along with the usual group, Anthony was brought along for quote on quote 'protection'. All of the group, except Cadence, agreed to bring him.

"Is everyone ready?" Veronica asked among the group.

Most everyone replied with a yes and when they did, they were not hesitant of getting out of the cold weather.

The group rushed over to the side of the school and went to the window they left unlocked the night prior. The window was wide and tall and was usually meant for fire exits. Veronica was the first to reach the window, and with a slight tug, the large window quietly opened.

One by one, the group entered the empty art room. Colleen closed the window behind her being she was the last one in the room.

Warmth hits the group and they all ease a little from the warmer room. The room is almost pitch black, but they can make out where the desks and chairs were by the faint moonlight. The room still reeked of oil paint and stale pastel crayons. As they headed toward the door to the hallway, Veronica turned around and looked at the rest of the group.

"Does everyone know their groups?" Veronica called.

Everyone nodded, giving Veronica a slight smile.

Before the whole group had arrived. The group was going to split up to try and find the server room. There were three groups that they decided upon: Veronica and Anthony would search near the office, Lincoln, Zachary, and Scarlet would search near the teachers' lounge and storage rooms, than Cadence, and Colleen are searching near the computer labs. Once one of the groups found the room. They would call the group on their phone. Simple as that.

"Ok. Everyone be aware. We cannot get caught doing this." Veronica commented.

"Are you sure we should be splitting up?" Lincoln suggested. Lincoln wasn't the only one thinking this. Cadence and Zachary also agreed upon staying in one group and searching together. They couldn't stop thinking of those cliché horror movies that had the groups split to look for something and end up dying off. That case sounded extreme, but they wanted to be cautious.

"We are in a school that is empty. We shouldn't have to worry about it. If we split up, we can find the place quicker." Veronica stated, turning back around and slowly opening the door.

Lincoln wanted to play it safe but just went with what she had said.

The smaller groups then dispersed and began to find the room. Veronica and Anthony began their walk down to the office. With the hallway being close to pitch black. Anthony was the first to grab his phone and turn on the flashlight, lighting the empty hallway.

"So you're being serious about this?" Anthony voiced, not caring to be quiet.

Veronica already in advance told Anthony everything that had happened within the last few nights of the innocent. Anthony was skeptical of it. He was never the type to believe stuff that was extremely out of the ordinary. He was one to keep to the books.

"Sure is." Veronica replied nonchalantly, continuing down the hallway.

It didn't take long for them to reach the office. After a few turns and straight walks, they were at the large wooden door. Anthony grabbed the knob and rotated it to open it, but it remained locked. He tried turning it again and like it should, it didn't budge.

"It's locked." He let go of the knob and looked at Veronica. "I thought that was going to be a problem." Veronica flipped her hair back and kneeled to the knob of the door. The door simply had a knob on it with a key lock on the inside of the knob. There was no other deadlocks or key card locks on it. It was a rather old door knob and had a significant amount of wear on it.

Veronica then reached to the back of her pocket and pulled out a hair pin, breaking it in half purposefully as she pulled it out.

"What are you doing?" Anthony said with a little concern.

"Opening this door." Veronica blatantly stated.

"Wait Veronica, I don't think we should be picking locks now." He hesitated.

"I don't think we should be breaking into schools either, but we did that, why not push it," Veronica shrugged bending one of the pieces of the pin. Veronica delicately grabbed both pins and set them inside the lock. She began to listen closely to the lock as she jittered the lock.

"Why? Are you scared?" Veronica smiled a little as she continued on the lock.

"No. Of course not. Just looking out for you." Anthony said, watching Veronica. Veronica rolled her eyes with humor and continued on the lock.

Anthony stood silently as Veronica picked the lock. It was so silent, Anthony could almost hear the mechanics in the door themselves, and he stood back quite a distance. With a sudden pop, Veronica stood up and opened the door with a few jerks of the knob.

"Inside we go." Veronica gestured Anthony inside.

---

Lincoln, Scarlet and Zachary have managed to reach the teachers hallway in good time. They took a left into a long corridor with doors being laid amongst the narrow passageway.

They didn't know where to start.

They started with the first door. Zachary turned on his flashlight on his phone. Scarlet grabbed at the door knob and turned it. Good news was that it opened without a fuss. Bad news is that it was just a room full of text books that have been outdated for years and years.

"Dude look how old these are!" Zachary whispered with amazement as he looked at the old dusty text books. Zachary studied the books that slowly collected stagnated dust on the floor. Zachary opened up on of the books and blew the generous amount of dust that the book has collected over the years.

"C'mon we have other things to looks for." Lincoln almost laughed at Zachary's amazement of the old books. Zachary looked to Lincoln in the dark and moved the flashlight away from the book and back on the door. He then got up and headed to the door a little disappointed he didn't get more time to look at the books.

"I wonder why they didn't lock the door." Scarlet waited for everyone to leave the room before she closed the door.

"They must have forgotten to lock the door last time they went into the room. Which was probably a while ago" Lincoln stated. Lincoln felt a little more suspicious about it, but he didn't want to say anything. He already is paranoid about the whole breaking into school.

They traveled to the next room where a solid wooden door similar to the previous one stood. Scarlet then reached for the knob and tried to open it. This time it budged and didn't want to open. It was locked.

"Shit I knew this was going to happen." Scarlet tried the knob again to have no luck follow.

"Just try another door." Lincoln said, advancing down the hall.

"What is every door is locked though genius?" Scarlet sassed looking at him.

"We're going to have to find another way through the doors." Lincoln simply shrugged.

"And how are we going to do that?" Scarlet retaliated.

Lincoln approached the next door and tried opening it. With a good turn of the knob, the knob kept its place and didn't rotate. Lincoln sighed and let go of the door knob.

"Great question." Lincoln looked over to Scarlet.

---

Cadence and Colleen were the last ones to arrive to their place. It took them a lot of navigating just to have them end up at the computer labs.

"There they are." Cadence rushed to the large pull out doors that stood midway through the hallway.

Cadence pulled on the doors and they opened with a slight squeak. Cadence slowed his opening, worrying that it would make too much noise. One the doors opened, the two entered, and Colleen let the door slowly return back to its old closed phase.

Colleen, who already had her flashlight equipped, glazed the flashlight over the huge computer lab. Rows of computers laid dormant with the screens turned off. Steps leading to each row of computer rose the level of the room, much like an inverted theater. The tall ceiling still made it look like a gigantic cathedral of a room.

Cadence looked around for a quick second in the almost pitch black and found something on the other side of the room. A corridor was attached to the lab. It wasn't a big surprise to him, he has seen it many times before, but he has never entered it in his vary few years he has been here. "It may be down here." He pointed down the corridor.

As they walked down the room Colleen walked next to him keeping the flashlight trained on the room. "So you have never been to the server room before?" Colleen seemed actually surprised by the realization of it. Ever since Colleen has known him, which isn't too long, she had always thought he knew where the server room is. With all of the different things he hacks into with the school, she almost thought by default he knew where it was.

"Nope. Never had the need to. Most everything that I do with getting into the schools server can be done outside of the room. Which has deemed to be useful." He contemplated.

"Why do we need to go to the server room if you can do the stuff away from it?" Colleen asked.

"I said I can most everything, gathering files from a drive is a bit more direct then wireless transfer." Cadence gestured.

When they entered the corridor, they observed the doors that spread down the hallway. Colleen kept the flashlight trained on one of the doors, and Cadence approached it. He grabbed the knob with the large sturdy wooden door and twisted it. To his non-surprise, the door budged and didn't open. "Well crap. I knew that was going to happen." Colleen stated, still training the flashlight on the door. "Yeah." Cadence moved away from the door, stuck in thought.

"Wait." Cadence walked up to the door and slowly put his ear up to the door. "What are you doing?" Colleen asked curiously. "Room with a lot of power require a lot of power to run. A lot of power needs cooling so it doesn't overheat. Fans are used for cooling computers and stuff like that. What do fans make?" He still listened contently to the door.

"Noise?" Colleen guessed. "Exactly! If one of these doors has a loud whirring sound or what not. It might be the room." Cadence explained, moving away from the door that didn't have any kind of noise. "And I know for a fact that Veronica can pick locks so if we find the right door. We can have her unlock it somehow." Colleen added.

"Heh. Yeah." Cadence went to the next door.

Cadence could remember when Veronica showed him how to pick locks. When he was just ten in fact. Veronica had a lock with her and was able to unlock it with only a hair pin. He thought it was so cool back then how she managed to unlock it without having to use the key. He almost saw it as magic. That was until of course the magician showed its trick.

Cadence was lost in thought as he listened to the doors intently. He noticed the flashlight was not trained on the door and instead covered in darkness.

"Colleen. Can you turn the flashlight back on please?" Cadence asked as he wondered away from the door in the dark. There was no response, and no flashlight that lit up the corridor. "Colleen?" Cadence stared in the darkness and looked around clueless on where she might be. Cadence quickly fetched his phone and turned on the flashlight as he walked out of the corridor.

"Colleen, stop joking please. You know I hate scares." Cadence complained. He moved the flashlight, trying to see where she went. Worry flooded Cadence as he searched the empty room. Lost in his footsteps, he wandered near the front door and opened it, tension rising.

Right as he left the door, he looked to his right, nothing there. Suddenly, something grabbed him by the waist and he tried to escape it. Cadence lost it and yelled in fright.

"I got you! I got you!" Colleen's voice hissed in laughter. "Get off of me!" Cadence ripped Colleen's arms off of him and drew a few feet away from her shining the flashlight at her.

Colleen's eyes squinted and she covered the light. "Oh c'mon is that necessary?" She said, trying to get out of the light. "Was that necessary?" Cadence exclaimed at Colleen, a little upset about the scare.

"Yeah a little." She chuckled. "Anyway, Veronica called," Colleen started walking down the hallway. "She found the room." She showed her phone, smiling intently.

Cadence looked angrily at her, before taking an uneasy breath and following her.

---

"So this is what it looks like." Zachary stated looking around with his flashlight, astounded by the amount of machinery in one room.

Everyone was gathered in a class sized room. Most would think the room would have plenty of space. The only problem was the immense amount of large computers there were took up that vast amount of space. Large black metal cases snaked all over the room. Creating a small labyrinth of whirring fans and flashing L.E.D lights that went about effortlessly.

"Cadence have you ever been here before?" Veronica asked following him around the crowded room.

Cadence looked back for a second, pausing his search for something. "No, I haven't." He responded, continuing his search.

"What are you looking for then?" Veronica led on to another question.

"The hard drive that contains the security footage files," Cadence crouched down wondering slowly along the maze of computers.

"They at least had the decency to label the drives, which will make it a ton easier to find the right one. But dear god, the cable management is atrocious." Cadence rambled on.

Veronica looked at one of the computers and saw cables vining around the computer like a vine garden that hasn't been touched in years.

"Why are you going on a hard drive? Wouldn't it be on the computer in like the principal's office or something?" Anthony asked.

"Yeah, you would think that at first. The files on the footage are automatically backed up onto a drive in case the computer in his office is stolen, broken, etcetera." Cadence explained, still looking for the drive.

"Is this it?" Lincoln voiced.

Everyone looked to him to see him crouched, pointing at one of the large computers that was flashing a few dim L.E.D lights. There was a label on the drive that read 'Surveillance Archives'. Cadence rushed to it and most everyone assisted on shining a flashlight on the label.

"It has to be." Cadence dropped on his knees and fetched his book bag from his back and laid it on the ground gently.

Cadence opened the computer with haste and grabbed a bulky laptop, laying it on the ground. He opened the computer lid and booted it with the press of a button. As the computer booted up, he grabbed various types of cables, all with different connections and began to hook them to the large computer.

"Jesus Christ." Scarlet muttered as she watched Cadence.

Everyone watched in astonishment as he did this in lightning speed. By the time the computer started up and prompted a password, which did not take long, he was done.

"Ok we're hooked up," Cadence quickly typed in a password into the laptop and waited for a few seconds before it brought him to the home screen. A picture of his pet lizard appeared on the home screen.

Within a minute of various clicks, Cadence was prompted to give a password for something.

"Ok. We're close." Cadence stated.

"What do you have to do now?" Anthony asked dumbly.

Cadence fetched an odd looking device from his bag and hooked it up to the computer. "I have to run an algorithm with this device so the computer can put in a correct password for the drive." Cadence explained.

"How long will it take to run an algorithm?" Anthony said, stuttering upon the new word he just learned.

Cadence pressed a button on the tacky device and the laptop went black.

"It depends on how complicated the password is-." Cadence was interrupted with a sharp ding to his laptop. The screen went back to its normal state.

"In that case. It was a really simple password," Cadence clicked a few more times. "We're in." Cadence smirked in satisfaction.

"That was quicker then I would've thought." Zachary stated.

"Mount Morrison doesn't have the best protection when it comes to technology. This was a breeze, trust me." Cadence glanced back to everyone who watched over him.

There was a pause as Cadence proceeded to get the videos. "Now we just need to find the right room." Cadence clicked a few more times, searching through the copious amounts of folders that were in the drive. Each of the folders has a name containing the room number or abbreviation. It only took a few seconds for Cadence to locate the file 'DET-RM150'. He opened the folder and videos began to pop up on his screen.

"It looks like these videos were all cut in hour intervals." Cadence stated.

Each of the videos had a name signifying the date and time of when the video was taken. It took close to a minute for the folder to load all the files, being that it carried thousands of videos from the year.

Cadence quietly looked for the correct video and date. An impatient minute passes and Cadence wasn't able to find anything.

"The video isn't here." Cadence backed up from the computer, surprised.

"Look," Veronica pointed at the screen, catching something. "They deleted all of the videos from when we were there." Veronica studied the screen.

She was right. Cadence looked at the files and found the lack of videos from when they got there that Thursday afternoon to somewhere in the middle of the night on Friday.

"Who would delete the files?" Scarlet asked, shifting her weight to one weight.

"Someone who knows how to get into the drive or the computer." Cadence said, leaning back toward his computer.

"You don't think the school has to do anything with this? Did they delete it?" Anthony commented.

"Anything is possible at this point." Veronica replied, glancing at him.

"How are we going to know that anything happened if the video was deleted?" Scarlet cautioned.

"The video might not be deleted." Cadence stood up from his crouch.

"We need to look for the-." Cadence was interrupted with a loud, muffled bang.

Everyone startled, Scarlet and Lincoln let out a small yell. Everyone froze in their position and looked around the dark room.

"What was that?" Zachary whispered.

Lincoln urgently gestured Zachary to be quiet. Everyone stood for close to thirty seconds, waiting for another noise, but nothing happened.

"Guys, I think we should get out of here." Lincoln stated.

"What are you afraid or something?" Scarlet mouthed.

"No. If someone is in this school and catches us. We're in deep shit." Lincoln whispered.

"I'm with Lincoln on that." Colleen stated.

"We need to find that video though. I am not leaving here empty handed." Veronica began to walk back to Cadence, who is frozen still.

"What do we need to look for Caden?" Veronica asked urgently.

"There should be a drive named 'Scratch Drive' something like that." Cadence answered, standing up from his lowered position.

Everyone began to move slowly around the server room to look for the drive.

"Guys, look." Zachary called quietly.

Everyone went to Zachary, who was pointing at a drive that read 'Scratch Space Drive'.

"That has to be it." Cadence took a look at it and went back to his laptop where he began to unplug everything, bringing it over to the other drive.

After Cadence was done plugging everything in. He waited for his computer to load the new drive. When the drive loaded, everyone was urgent to see what was in the drive. Cadence entered in the same password that was prompted on the surveillance drive and with a quick code, he was through.

Suddenly, files of all sorts began to pop onto the drive. Assignments from different classes and various tests that have already been taken.

"Holy crap that's a lot of stuff." Zachary stated, watching .

"The scratch drive is basically a recycle bin that deletes its files weekly. So if they deleted the videos, they would be in here. Unless they deleted them off this drive too." Cadence explained.

Everyone was silent as Cadence searched through the drive for the videos.

Cadence froze and stopped scrolling on the laptop. He began to see thumbnails of the detention room. Everyone looked to see the videos that were missing on the drive. They were there, all of them. From when detention started to in the middle of the night.

"Watch them!" Veronica broke the silence with a loud whisper

Cadence quickly clicked on the video with the title 'DET_11/25/18_6:00PM'. The video loaded, revealing a video of everyone sitting bored in the room. Cadence skipped through the video, suddenly stopping at the part where everyone was scattered around the room.

They watched as Emerald walked to the door, complaining just like she did that Thursday. Everyone was still silent as they watched the footage, still shocked that they found the videos. Just like Thursday, the video betrayed all of the events that had happened. From when Emerald threatened Zachary to everyone running up to stop the fight. They were anticipating what happened after that.

That's when a canister entered the room. The video showed the smoke spreading across the room and everyone moving to the corner of the room. Everyone was shocked as they watched the video play on.

So everything that did happen on Thursday was true, but how was it possible? How did the room look flawless the day after that detention? Their minds were occupied with question as they tried to figure out what was going on.

The speaker played back loud crashes as everyone threw desks and chairs at the wall. Everything fell silent as Mr. Woodman walked in the room. The camera picked up him walk into the smoke, looking for the students.

That's when the roar came again. Everyone watched intently as the video played in silence.

Suddenly, the object flew through the window, tackling Mr. Woodman just like it did the day it actually happened.

"Pause it!" Veronica blurted, keeping her voice down.

Cadence paused the video with a start and everyone observed at the screen. The object looked much clearer than it did the day it actually happened.

The object like Cadence predicted wasn't human. It had the structure of a human. It stood on two lean hind legs. Its body almost towered over Mr. Woodman, making it look like a playground bully. Its skin resembled a jagged dark grey skin with smallish horns that ran across it back. Along with that, large wings clenched close to its back, looking as if it was stuck to his back. The creature also wore some sort of armor. The clothing resembled a leather type of armor that covered most its body. It also has a large helmet that look like it would fit one of a short snouted alligator. They couldn't make out details of it, but it covered its face almost entirely.

Cadence readjusted his glasses, staring at the unbelieve creature. No one said a word as they studied the picture.

"Holy shit," Anthony looked dumbfounded at the screen. "You weren't joking about this." He commented nonchalantly.

Right as Veronica was about to reply, a loud bang happened again, it was much louder this time.

The noise was in the room.

Before they could react. Everyone's flashlights turned off, leaving the room completely dark. Most of everyone got up with a jump and began to scatter around the room, searching for the door. Scarlet, Zachary, Anthony, Veronica, and Lincoln were the first ones to leave the room and run out of the office.

As Colleen was about to leave the room, she looked behind herself to see Cadence still on this laptop.

"What are you doing?!" Colleen yelled angrily.

"I'm transferring the files to my computer!" He remained at the computer waiting impatiently.

"No! We need to leave now!" Colleen ran up to Cadence and grabbed him.

Colleen used her short but strong body to lift the lanky Cadence off the ground. He resisted as Colleen dragged him away from his computer.

"Colleen what are you doing! Stop it!" Cadence left her grasp running back to his laptop. Before Cadence could do anything else, something clawed at his chest. Cadence fell on his bottom and skootched back in terror.

Cadence let out a fearful yell, and got up as quick as possible, running to the door with Colleen.

The room fell silent as the one who tried to grab Cadence didn't chase him.

With the room empty and dark. The only thing keeping any light was the vacant computer that still transferred the videos.
