Chapter IV: Distortions

All of them stood in shock as they watched the smoke cover the dark room. No one knew what to do. They never had imagined being trapped in a detention room with dangerous smoke filling the room. But in time, Cadence and Veronica looked at the window in unison and looked at each other.

"The window!" They both blurted. No one got what they had meant, but Veronica was quick to their confusion.

"Everyone grab something and break the window!" Veronica neared a chair that lined perfectly with the rows of other seats. Veronica snatched the chair, trying her best to keep away from the smoke that came closer to them.

Scarlet and Cadence grabbed a chair that was placed nearest to them and began to whip the pegs of the chair at the thick pained window. The glass didn't break, but did crack with every labored hit.

As they made their attempts to break the glass, they all began to feel light headed as the gas neared their bodies. They weren't going to give up though. They didn't want to die, or at least that's what they thought was going to happen if they didn't do anything.

With the window keeping its shape, they all thought that the window would never break. Lincoln and Zachary then decided to try something bigger. The two rushed to a large wooden table that still wasn't submerged in smoke and grabbed it weakly.

Before they had time to aim anything else at the window, another noise came from the door. Everyone froze, and looked at the door.

With close to no light in the class room, they were surprised to see a bright light from the hallway illuminate in the doorway. They all watched as a silhouetted man approached the door. The man had what looked like a gas mask attached to his face, making his head look uncanny in the silhouetted light, but what caught their eye was what he carried with his hands.

It was gun. A Glock in fact. Cadence can remember seeing that in a random internet forum he read. Even know he has never shot a gun, he likes to know about them.

As they looked closer into the figure, they began to see a resemblance. The lose dress shirt and tie almost gave it away, but what confirmed their outlandish thoughts was the bald head.

The man was Mr. Woodman.

Why is Mr. Woodman carrying a gun? What is going on?! Everyone ravaged in their heads.

Tension grew as they feared they would be seen. They all quietly dropped what they had in their hands and hid behind the mess of tables and chairs in hopes of not being found. They all were crouched as they slowly watched Mr. Woodman step into the room.

The room was silent except for the sounds of heavy rain that abused the windows.

Mr. Woodman slowly neared the group with his slow and agile footsteps, but he didn't see the students. All he could see is large amounts of smoke around him like a dark hazy morning. He then stopped suddenly, almost running into Emerald with his dress shoes. He looked down and realized Emerald was not moving. He kicked her arm a few times to ensure she was not going to move again.

Dennis was not happy that Mr. Woodman was toying with her, he deepened his face and made an angered look at him, but remained still as Scarlet signaled him not to do anything. They didn't have a choice unfortunately.

After Mr. Woodman confirmed that Emerald was not moving, he moved on and neared the innocent students again. His steps became more intense as they could now hear each soft pound of his feet. Everyone was scared shitless, their hearts raced as he neared the group. They didn't know what to do. Attack him? Distract him? Everyone hoped that something would happen to aid their escape, but time grew scarce.

Before Mr. Woodman took another step closer, a muffled roar sounded outside. Everyone had thought it was thunder, but the noise faded out quicker then thunder would. The noise was unique, it was instead more aggressive and only lasted a second before the sound was taken over by the sounds of convoluted rain.

Confused, everyone, including Mr. Woodman looked outside into the sheer darkness.

Everyone had a second of silence before a huge flying object smashed into the window the group was previously trying to break. No one could tell what the thing was, but they watched it run right into Mr. Woodman, knocking him into the wall. The sound of brick cracking echoed through the empty room, startling the students.

With no time to waste, everyone got up and looked at the now shattered window. The window was almost broken clean, only some shards of glass still held its place on the edges of the window.

A strong force of wind blew past them as they began to jump out of the window like frightened gazelles.

One by one, everyone had jumped out of the window in panic. Cadence, who was the last one to leave, looked back for a second. He adjusted his glasses to see the room a bit clearer. Cadence could see moments of clarity as the two figures fought in the lingering smoke. He heard loud punches and kicks in the room, but what caught his bad eyes was what he saw in the smoke. He watched as large, burly arms swung about in the smoke. The figure was large, but with the smoke blurring his already bad vision. He struggled to make a consensus on what it was.

Cadence was so invested in his sight-seeing, he didn't even realize the precious time that went by. "Cadence! Get your ass over here now!" Veronica demanded. Cadence hesitated, looking into the dark room once more before jumping out of the window and onto the water saturated grass.

It was now aggressively raining. Clouds in the sky were a glum and dense gray. Everyone ran as thunder and lightning actively struck down on Earth as if Mother nature was having a tantrum. The storm abused the trees and grass with harsh winds and heavy rain. Rain drenched the students, sending chills down their spines.

Time progressed as everyone rushed to the parking lot. Luckily since the window they had exited was on the outside of the school. A turn of a corner was all that was needed to reach the parking lot.

When they reached the old and worn out parking lot, Lincoln and Veronica obtained their car keys to leave the school. The group had no intention on staying here.

"I don't have my keys!" Dennis squawked, patting his pockets as they ran.

"Just drive with me and Lincoln!" Scarlet yelled. Lincoln looked back, unpleased about what she had said. Lincoln was never a fan of Scarlets friends, and he would do a lot to stay away from them. But he had to make an exception for this, he would rather stay alive then fight with Scarlet about her friend.

Finding the cars was thankfully the least of their worries. With the parking lot being near empty, it took little to no effort to see their beat-up cars.

Everyone still ran vigorously, anticipating for something to happen behind them. They were so shocked, they didn't know what to expect.

Veronica and Cadence split up from the rest of the group as they headed to Veronica's car. The two cars were on opposite sides of the parking lot.

Veronica looked over to see Lincoln, Zachary, Dennis and Scarlet move away from her, heading toward their car.

"We will talk in second hour! You don't tell anyone about this, not now at least!" Veronica yelled across the lot.

Everyone agreed upon Veronica's request and made their final descent to the cars.

Drenched, Veronica and Cadence got into her car, started it and drove off with no time to waste.

The two sat in silence they headed home. They couldn't comprehend anything that had just happened. Questions filled their minds like a cluttered room. They didn't know where to start.

---

Blood covered his white shirt. He was hurt, but it wasn't fatal. He was suffering from a few broken bones and a few ruptured organs, but he would do ok.

Before he had another chance to make a move on the enemy who bested him, it was gone out of the window in a heartbeat.

He stood in silence, rain covering the sound of his defeat. He took a deep breath before putting his finger tip to his ear. With a click of a button he brought his bloody hand back down to his disfigured waist.

"There is an update." He simply spoke, trying to hide the hurt in his dampened voice.

Some static filled the ear piece until he heard it silence. Someone heard him.

"Please elucidate." A deep, raspy voice sounded. He paused for a moment as he tried to confess what happened.

"They escaped." He stated.

He then heard a low scowl ocellate through his ear. He waited for what it was going to say next.

"What happened?" It snapped.

"I was attacked." He kept his words short, feeling humiliated for his failure. He also feared his future punishments for failing his simple job, but he kept that to himself.

"By who?" It ridiculed.

There was a pause as he gathered his few words to state.

"By one of your own." He told, looking around the room that had begun to clear of smoke.

He waited for a response but received nothing. He could tell it was upset with the response.

"Did you subdue any of them?" It finally released, ignoring the previous statement.

"Just one, but it's not one of them. it's just a student." He responded quickly.

"She will be enough," There is a pause for a second. It chuckled for a moment before finishing its words.

"She will be plenty..." It grimaced, letting out the rest of its rumbling chuckles.

The communications on the earpiece then went back to silence, leaving him alone in the darkness.
