Chapter 9 -- The Prisoner's Dilemma

"So.  We have two options," Steve said, looking up at the projected live feed of Chimera's cell.  "We can let her go and have her be a continued threat to Bucky and I, or we can execute her and be over with it."

"Or just leave her in there," Natasha suggested.

"I would actually prefer letting her go out of those options," Wanda said, twisting her fingers so the red mist danced between them.  Peter stared at it, hypnotized.

"So we've got a bit of a dilemma then."  Steve rested his chin in his hand.  "Because it's pretty dangerous for Bucky and I if she runs free."

"I understand that you four," Natasha said to Bruce, Bucky, Steve, and Wanda, "might feel differently about all of this."

"She tried to kill Steve and I," Bucky said, glaring at the table.

"And she tried to use the trigger words to turn him against me," Steve said.

"Okay, so you two don't like her much--"

"At all."

"But we can't treat her like an animal."

"Right.  That's how HYDRA treats her," Bucky said.  Everyone looked at him.  "That's how they treated me.  Like I had no mind of my own."

"That's how they treated Pietro and me," Wanda added.

"So the difference between us and HYDRA is that we haven't treated her like an animal?" Steve asked.

"We kind of have," Bucky said.  "She's stuck in a cell.  We feed her twice a day."

"It's the same way any other prisoner would be treated," Tony said.

"Maybe that needs to change," Bucky scowled across the table.

"We don't need to start another war," Wanda said, glancing at both men.

"No, we don't," Peter repeated.  She looked at him for a moment before watching her fingers again as the mist wove around them.

"What do we do with her?" Sam asked.

"I think we should take a vote," Steve said.

"Mr. America has spoken, we'll vote," Tony said.  Steve shot him a glare.

"Okay.  All for letting her go raise your hand," Tony continued.

Nobody raised their hand.

"Keeping her in her cell indefinitely?"

Again, nobody raised their hand.

"Executing her."

Only Tony raised his hand.

"Wow.  Not even America's Sweetheart voted."

"That's a new nickname," Steve noticed.

"A true one," Tony pointed out.

"Why do you want to kill her?" Wanda asked.

"It'll take care of the problem."

"But then we'll be on the same level as HYDRA.  They're trying to take care of their own problem by sending her to kill Bucky and Steve."

Tony sighed.

"This isn't just a normal dilemma," Steve said.  "This is a moral dilemma."

"The prisoner's dilemma," Peter mused.

"What?"

"I learned about it at school.  Two prisoners are given the choice to either confess or betray their accomplice and, whatever their answers are, certain scenarios are put into action."

"I know what it is.  Why did you bring it up?"

"Could we use it?"

"It only works with two people, Peter," Sam said.

"Oh."

"But good thinking, kid," Tony said.

"Really?"  His face lit up.  "Thanks, Mr. Stark!"

The door opened, and they all looked.

"Hey guys!"

It was Scott.

"Hello," Steve replied.

"Wow.  I can't believe you guys wanted me to come help you!" he exclaimed, sitting down next to Natasha.

She subtly moved her seat over, closer to Wanda.

Steve looked up at the screen.  "She's sitting really still."

"Who is?" Scott asked.

"Chimera."

Tony rewound, then went forward.  She was staring at the camera intently the whole time, but when her chest should have been moving while she breathed, it was still.

"She did something to it," Tony said.

Steve grabbed his shield and sprinted down the stairs.  Bucky followed.

The cell was empty.  Somehow, she had busted a hole in the bulletproof glass door and bypassed all of their cameras.

Tony reached them a minute later, already in his suit.  He cursed, kicking at the wall.

Steve just sprinted off out onto the street.  He stopped three streets away from the tower when he realized she could be anywhere, and he could be going in the wrong direction.  He walked back slowly, having to stop to take pictures with people on the street as fangirls gushed over his autograph.
