Chapter 7 -- Got Her

"Have you been able to find her?" Natasha asked, leaning forward on her hands.

Tony shook his head, flipping through to another clip of footage.

"What's that?" she asked, pointing to a blur.

He stopped the screen, and went back a few seconds.  The screen showed a bluish blur.  "It could just be a lens flare.  See, there's a car right there, with its headlights on."

"Or it could be Chimera.  Go to the next camera."

"Already doing that.  Seriously, do you think I'm that slow?"

"Tony."

He flicked to the next camera.  The blur was there too.  They followed the trail until she disappeared.  Tony moved his hand so four different cameras around the area she disappeared showed footage.  Finally, at 21:39:13, the top right screen had the image of a blonde girl in a dark jacket entering a convenience store.

One camera inside caught her face.  "Got her," Tony said, zooming on her face as she glanced up at the camera.

"Are you sure that's her?" Natasha asked, crossing her arms.

"Cover the bottom part of her face if you're not sure."

She held up her hand.

The door opened and closed behind them.  "What are you guys doing in the lab at..." Steve paused to look at the time, "oh-two hundred hours?"

"Normal speech, Steve," Tony said.

"It's two o'clock, Tony," Natasha said tiredly.

"I know, but most of society doesn't."

"So what are you doing?" Steve asked again.

"We found Chimera."

"Where?"  He walked towards the screen and put his head behind Natasha's to see what she saw.

"Bob and Marty's Convenience Store, south D.C."  Tony glanced at his former enemy.  "And no, you aren't going right now."

"She could move."

"She won't."

"You don't know her."

"You don't either.  I'll have Vision keep an eye on her."

The aforementioned program drifted through the wall.

"Speak of the devil," Natasha muttered.

"What is it you want me to do, Tony?"

"Keep an eye on these cameras.  If you see a blur, pause all footage.  If you see a girl in a black hoodie coming from the alleyway, pause all footage.  If you see a girl with a muzzle, pause all footage."

"Understood."

Tony all but pushed Steve out the door and escorted him back to his bedroom.

"I should just go after her," he protested again.

"No.  You're not ready to."

"Of course I'm ready!"

"The four inch stab wound on your abdomen kindly begs to differ."

Steve sighed.  "Fine.  I'll wait until tomorrow."

The next morning, Vision did not notify Tony of anything until after everyone had eaten.

"Sir, the target left the alleyway at four in the morning.  I paused the footage, as you asked."

"Why didn't you come earlier then?" Tony asked.  "And seriously guys, coffee grounds in the sink?  I already talked to you guys about that."

"Though I have never experienced the need for food, humans tend to perform better after they have eaten a balanced breakfast."

He sighed.  "Alright.  We'll go look for her."

Everyone followed.  All together, they watched the footage.  She walked out of the alleyway wearing her hoodie with the hood down and the muzzle on.

Chimera headed north, back towards the tower.

They tracked her back, eventually getting to across the street at 9:32:16.

"What time is it?" Peter asked.

"Nine thirty-three," Bucky answered.

"Get down!"

Everyone dropped, surprised at Wanda's yell.  A disk-shaped bomb flew through the glass and landed on the metal floor.  Steve dove for his shield and put it over the bomb, holding it down with his body.

"Get back!"

They all took shelter.

They waited for a whole minute for it to explode, but the blast never came.

Steve got up slowly, crouched behind his shield.  He was about to poke up his head when the bomb exploded, throwing him backwards into the desk.

Peter was the first to react, somehow taking off his street clothes to be in his suit almost immediately.  He dove through the window, catching himself on a nearby building.

Chimera took aim with a small pistol and he barely dodged the bullets.

She put the gun back into her pocket holster, then flew up towards him the way Wanda did.

Peter tried to swing out of her way, but she landed on his back, dragging him down towards the ground.  "Mr. Stark?  Can I have a bit of help?" he called as he flipped over.  She pinned his wrists to the concrete palm-down so he couldn't shoot out the threads he would usually use to disarm her.  She moved her leg up to hold his left wrist, and a knife was in her hand in a split second.

The eyeholes of the spider suit contracted as he flinched, awaiting the strike.

A flash of red and yellow flew by overhead, followed by black and silver.  Chimera looked up, and Peter took the advantage to buck her off, tying her up.

Tony circled back to stand on one side of her and James stood on the other.

"Stand down," James said sternly.

She glared at Peter, twitching as she attempted to "Quicksilver" her way out of it.

The three of them brought her back to the tower and took her down to the basement, where Natasha patted her down and removed every weapon from her person.

She also confiscated Chimera's muzzle, jacket, shoes, and gloves, just in case.

Then she was cuffed and brought to an interrogation chamber.

The interrogator was carefully screened, to prevent anything from happening like what did with Zemo and Bucky.

She took her seat at the table and smiled at Chimera, who was sitting in a pod not unlike the one Bucky had been in.  It was almost as though Tony were recreating the scene.

Bucky left before the interrogator even opened her folder.

Everyone else stayed where they were.

"What is your name?"

"Project X."

"Is that what you are called?"

"Yes."

"Who are your parents?"

"I have none.  I was raised by HYDRA."

"How old are you?"

"Seventeen."

"You mentioned to Captain Steve Rogers about a mission.  What is that mission?"

"Destroy Captain America and the Winter Soldier."

"And why is that?"

"They are my orders."

"Can you disobey those orders?"

Chimera was silent.

The interrogator repeated the question again.  Then again.  Finally, she said, "We cannot continue until you answer the question."

"Nyet!"

"That means no," Tony said into a microphone, feeling smart.

Chimera started at the noise.  The interrogator merely nodded.  "I was aware.  Project X, where did you receive these commands?"

"I do not remember."

The interrogator glanced at the screen next to her.  Chimera was telling the truth.

"Was your memory wiped?"

"I do not know."

"Did you come over by plane or boat?"

"I do not know."

"Where were you trained?"

"In a HYDRA facility."

"Where is that facility?"

"I do not know."

As the interrogation continued, it became apparent that Chimera's memory had been compromised.

Steve was ready to exit when the interrogator said, "Project X, I am about to stop the recording.  Is there any last statements you would like to make before I do?"

She lifted her head for the first time.  "Heil HYDRA."

Steve slammed the door on his way out.
