Chapter 22 -- We Aren't Coming for Tea
Project X paced around her cell.
She'd graciously been given one of the very few cells with a porthole. Unfortunately, when the prison was submerged, she was down too far to see anything. But the cell was nice enough.
Nicer than her accommodations at HYDRA.
She had three meals a day, an hour of exercise in a special room that disabled her powers, and a soft bed.
She'd learned the name of her guard, Kurt, and he called her Chimera, no matter how many times she tried to tell him that she was Project X. He'd shown some interest in learning Russian, so she taught him some basic phrases and words during exercise.
Project X decided to use his liking of her to her own advantage. Perhaps she could escape next time one of the Avengers came to visit.
Natasha had come twice.
Both times, Kurt had placed a chair on the other side of the glass, and she had sat down.
All she'd come to do was ask for information about HYDRA. Apparently the Winter Soldier was beginning to remember things, and the Avengers thought she would too.
Natasha left disappointed.
But now Project X was waiting for the redhead's visit.
She had a plan.
She'd told Kurt that she remembered something important, and he'd left to notify the Avengers.
She really did remember something important, but she was smart enough not to just give away the information. she could use it for her own benefit.
Instead of only Natasha coming, Tony, Wanda, and the Winter Soldier all came.
They stood in front of the glass. She kept her back to them, fiddling with the little bit of power the magnetic field allowed.
Tony cleared his throat impatiently.
She pretended not to hear.
He cleared his throat again.
Project X could sense the Winter Soldier's glare and cracked the slightest bit of a smile.
"Well, if you have nothing you'd like to tell us, we'll just leave now," Tony said.
She rolled her eyes and stood. "Were you never taught patience, Iron Man?"
They stopped as she approached the glass.
Project X placed her hand on the window and the Winter Soldier took a step forward. "It won't break," she told him in Russian.
"I almost wish it would," he responded.
Tony didn't ask for a translation. "What is it you have to tell us?"
"I know where the HYDRA base I was in is."
"We already found the one in Sokovia. Nobody was there except for us and some super soldier, all of whom were dead."
She shook her head. "I was in Siberia. I cannot tell you exactly where it is, but if we fly over the area, we might be able to find it."
"I don't remember there being one in Siberia," the Winter Soldier said.
"I was moved there from somewhere else, and that somewhere else was abandoned. That's why there was nobody in the one in Sokovia. They abandon some of the bases, to make sure they aren't found."
"What region of Siberia is it?" Tony asked, flicking his wrist so a map appeared in the air.
"There were mountains. I only saw it from the air."
He somehow pulled the image back into his phone, and turned to Wanda.
They seemed to come to an agreement all together without speaking, and she tried to tap into the dark-haired girl's mind, but it was too late.
Tony walked off and returned with Kurt. Her guard was carrying a pair of power-cancelling cuffs, with a similar magnetic field to that in the exercise room, but stronger.
He started to unlock the door.
She held out her hand. "Can I put them on myself?"
Kurt glanced at Tony, who nodded, telling her, "I'll check them after you put them on."
The guard slid them through the hole that he usually put her meals through.
She examined them, seemingly to see how to put them on, but mostly to figure out any weaknesses. She found none, and, disappointed, put them on, tightening them so they were snug.
Kurt unlocked the door and she stepped out.
The Winter Soldier grabbed the chain between her wrists and yanked her forward. She barely flinched when the cuffs pinched her skin.
"Bucky," Tony chastised, using a tiny key from his wristwatch to unlock and loosen the cuffs.
The older man scowled at the wall, then walked towards the exit. The other three, with Project X in tow, followed.
Tony began to explain to her what they would be doing, mostly for himself and his team's benefit. The Winter Soldier suddenly stopped. Project X, almost sensing it, stopped before she crashed into him. She lurched forward when Natasha ran into her back.
She turned and scowled at the redhead, who looked at her indifferently.
Once in the helicarrier, Tony darkened the windows. Thirty minutes later, he pressed a button, and they became transparent again.
Project X looked out the window.
"Anything you recognize?" Tony asked.
She shook her head. A peculiar feeling spread through her mind. She glanced over at Wanda, whose hands were glowing.
Project X didn't stop to wonder if she could push Scarlet Witch out of her mind, she just did it.
They circled a peak and she recognized a canyon coming down and away. She pointed the direction and Natasha told Tony.
The Winter Solider looked oddly pained. Probably because he was sitting in a helicarrier with his best friend's murderer.
She guided them to the base.
Tony left it hovering about twenty feet above the snow. "Get suited up. Call the team. I'm going down to scout it out."
He took off his watch and left it on a table. Then he walked over to a seat and pressed a button. His suit began to encase him.
"You can't get in without me!" Project X called.
"I don't need you to get me in. We aren't coming for tea. We're coming to get rid of them." And then he was gone.
She scowled at the wall. The Winter Soldier emerged wearing a version of Captain America's suit. She recollected Kurt telling her that he'd taken over the title of Captain America.
The two women came out not too much longer, and they jumped down also, leaving Project X alone.
She stood up and looked around. The watch was still on the table.
She picked it up, and, after much fiddling around, found out how to unclasp her cuffs.
Project X looted the helicarrier for weapons, and finally jumped down with two guns and her muzzle.
