Chapter 16 -- August 12

The following obituary ran in the New York Times, accompanied by a front page article.

Captain Steven Grant 'Steve' Rogers

"Captain Steven Grant Rogers, known more commonly as Captain America, was killed in action August 12, 2022.  He was born in Brooklyn, New York on July 4, 1918 to Sarah and Joseph Rogers.  His father was killed in action before he was born, and his mother died from tuberculosis when he was eighteen.  For much of his life, before he was frozen, he was sickly.

"He enlisted in the United States Army in World War 2 many times before finally being accepted into a special program run partially by Howard Stark, the late father of one of his teammates, Tony Stark, alias Iron Man.  He was selected to be experimented on to create a super soldier to help win the war for the Allies because of his selflessness, ingenuity, and overall heroism.  Shortly after the successful experiment, he toured to various army bases with show girls in an attempt to raise morale.  After one group, the 107th, booed him offstage, he investigated and was informed that many in their ranks had been captured by Nazi group HYDRA, one of whom was his childhood friend, James Buchanan 'Bucky' Barnes.

"He single handedly invaded the HYDRA base, rescuing most of the American troops held captive.  Shortly after, Barnes, Rogers, and a small group of soldiers, the 'Howling Commandos,' began to systematically attack HYDRA bases to free prisoners, gain and destroy information, and attempt to capture any prestigious officers.  On one mission, Barnes fell from a train to what was supposed his death.

"Rogers continued half-heartedly, eventually crashing his malfunctioning plane into the Arctic polar ice cap.  He was found and unfrozen nearly seventy years later by S.H.I.E.L.D.  Because of the serum that had been injected into his body, he was able to withstand the cold, staying in a coma-like state until he was unfrozen.

"Eventually, a group of other 'superheroes' was formed, the Avengers.  Rogers was often referred to as 'the First Avenger,' not only because he was the oldest of the group, but because he was the first known Avenger.  This group is known for being a mostly tight-knit group, though they are not without their skirmishes.

"Around the time of the collapse of S.H.E.I.L.D., a mercenary sent by HYDRA, known as the Winter Soldier, assassinated director Nick Fury.  He also attempted to kill Rogers.  The Captain recognized the Winter Soldier as none other than his old friend Bucky Barnes, his fellow soldier who'd fallen from the train in Sokovia.  Barnes eventually disappeared again, not to emerge in public until very recently, when an anti-HYDRA anti-Avengers Sokovian who called himself Zemo disguised himself as Barnes, blowing up a building in which representatives from over a hundred countries were gathered to sign an agreement.  Among those killed in the blast was the former king of Wakanda, T'Chaka.  This set a worldwide search for Barnes, with various groups racing to find him first.  Rogers was the first to locate the man, and this, as well as many other factors, created a feud between the Avengers, namely Jones and teammate Anthony Stark, also known as Iron Man.  This fight ended in Sokovia, with Rogers relinquishing his title as Captain America.

"Barnes and Rogers retreated to Wakanda, where Barnes was placed under cryo, a chemical designed to freeze tissues but leave the mind and other vital organs intact, while causing whoever is under it to stop aging.  The Wakandans crafted for Rogers a new shield, and Stark and he eventually were able to settle their disagreements.

"Rogers moved back into the Avenger's base, at an undisclosed location, and recently, the brand-new D.C. base, as well as the rest of the team who had sided with him.

"A few days ago, a super soldier, who called herself 'Project X' arrived in New York City.  She escaped them the first time, and later emerged in the Lincoln Memorial in the District of Columbia.  The Avengers nicknamed this soldier Chimera, a play on the HYDRA motto and the fact that she was created using a bit of DNA from Barnes, Rogers, Dr. Bruce Banner, and twins Pietro and Wanda Maximoff.

"She threatened to blow up the Avengers Tower if Barnes and Rogers did not fight her alone in Central Park.  It was during this battle that Rogers was fatally wounded by a knife in his stomach.  Barnes stated that Chimera had threatened to detonate a bomb that she said had been placed by the other Avengers if they did not surrender, and Rogers' inner heroism was too much to avoid his apparent doom.  The Avengers did not wish to further comment on Chimera.

"Steve Rogers is survived by his friend Bucky Barnes, and the entire Avengers team, whom he considered to be his family when he had none.  There is to be a private funeral ceremony on Saturday, August 20, 2022, followed by a public memorial in the Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D. C."
