Chapter 1 -- On Your Left
"On your left," Steve called.
Sam picked up his speed. "That's your twelfth lap. You've lapped me ten times. Give it a rest?"
He smiled. "No. I've only got eighteen more to go." An earpiece in his ear beeped. He touched it, slowing to a jog. "Steve Rogers."
"Someone's causing a commotion outside of the Tower," Tony said.
"Fans?"
"No. Someone else. You and Sam get here as quickly as possible."
"We don't have our suits."
"Use the back door."
Steve sighed and ran up behind Sam again. "Tony needs us at the base."
They jogged back to the newly finished D.C. base and noticed what was going on. A lone figure was standing in a red bubble. The other Avengers were circled around the figure.
"Is that Wanda?" Sam asked.
Steve looked again as they raced around the corner. "No. Someone else."
They got into their suits as quickly as was humanly possible, or, in Steve's case, superhumanly possible, and ran out to join the battle.
The bubble had come down and the figure was dodging blows from Hulk, while shooting bullet after bullet at Wanda.
Tony's voice came through the earpiece. "Before Banner went into Hulk mode, he wanted us to try and get some sort of DNA thing from her so see if you can get some blood or hair from her."
"Her?" Steve asked.
"Yeah. Her. Squeamish about hitting girls?"
"If she's hurting people, no."
Sam got up into the air for a better vantage point. Steve ran into the middle of the battle and flung his shield.
The girl caught it. Everyone paused for just a moment and that gave her the advantage. She turned, whipping her blond ponytail behind her, and threw the shield at Tony. He blocked the vibranium circle and dropped it towards Steve.
He caught it just in time to block a bullet.
"Do we know her mission?" Steve asked.
"She came up to Wanda as she was going out and asked for you. When she wouldn't say where you were, she attacked."
"Great. I'm the mission again." Steve took a step back to gather himself and ran at the girl.
He kicked at her and she blocked it, grabbing his ankle to throw him to the ground. In a second, Natasha was in, throwing a few punches to distract her while Steve got up again.
"What are we calling her?" Steve asked, ducking under a punch to dive at her legs, intending to knock her down.
"Getting sentimental?" Tony asked.
"No. Just crossed my mind."
"This is probably not the time for naming the super villain."
A green mass flew over Steve and he rolled out of the way as the Hulk landed in front of the girl.
"Get Hulk out of here!" he yelled.
Natasha sighed. "I can try."
While she tried to get him out of the area and calmed down, Steve reached for the ponytail. Securing a hair, he tried to get a glance at her face.
The bottom part of her face was covered by a muzzle, not too dissimilar from the one Bucky had worn. Her eyes were blue. They narrowed and she lunged at him.
Her gun had disappeared, to be replaced with a knife.
Steve used his shield to keep it away from his face, and grabbed her wrist. He didn't know he'd been back up towards the wall until his back hit something hard. The blade came closer and closer to his face. With a grimace, he pushed it towards her.
While she was off guard, he moved so that where they were was reversed and the blade was almost at her face instead.
What little expression the muzzle allowed was a mix of fear and hatred.
Steve pulled back for a moment. That was enough for her to wrench the knife from his hand and sprint off down the street.
"Track her," Tony called.
"On it," Sam reported.
"No." Steve stood under the doorway, out of breath.
"Pardon?" Tony landed next to him and his suit began to retract.
"No. Leave her. We should figure out who she is first." He held up the hair.
"Are you daft, Rogers? We need to catch her. We can do her DNA with her in captivity."
Sam landed behind the metal man. "It's too late now. She's gone."
Tony cursed.
Bruce, looking rather disheveled, walked up with Natasha. "You got the DNA sample?"
"Yeah. Here you go." Steve passed the hair over.
Bruce walked past the group and went straight up to his lab.
"Once we find out who she is, we can check the missing person records and find her family so they know she is alive." Steve stared at Iron Man's expressionless mask, before turning and following the scientist.
Bruce puttered around with his equipment for a few hours while the other Avengers waited on couches in the media room.
"I ran a facial scan on her while we were fighting," James said. "It came up negative. I think it was the mask."
"The eyes would have made it work," Tony pointed out. "I've outfitted you with a retina scan, too."
"Maybe she isn't in the register," Natasha suggested.
"Unlikely. Especially now."
"Hydra could have erased her," Sam said.
"Slightly more likely. But still unlikely."
Bruce poked his head out of his lab. "I've got the results. Come in here."
He enlarged a picture of her DNA to show everyone. "I analyzed her DNA. She didn't come up who I expected. The first name that came up was James Buchanan Barnes."
"Well she's obviously not Bucky. She's, well, a girl, and her hair's blonde--" Steve trailed off. Everyone was looking at him.
"We know," Natasha said.
"But there were other sections in the DNA that matched up with other people. Steven Grant Rogers was the fourth one on the list. Two and three were Wanda Ana Maximoff and Pietro Django Maximoff. Five was Robert Bruce Banner." Bruce paused to let that sink in.
"All of the modified humans they've had access to," Sam said to himself.
Tony leaned against a table nervously. "It appears Hydra has created the ultimate super soldier."
