Chapter 8: Answers
A/N: Hello, guys! So sorry it's been a long time without an update. I've had a major case of writer's block the past couple months and haven't had any inspiration to finish this chapter until just now. I hope it was worth the wait for this chapter and I apologize if it seems like just a filler. I promise the next one will be better and have some more action in it. Anyways, enjoy and I'll catch you all on the flip side :) -Vanessa
Humming of machines sounded throughout the small room Elle lay unconscious in.
"NOOO!!" The young blonde jolted awake, machines going off as she sat upright in the bed.
Heart racing, she began looking around the room and taking in her surroundings.
She was in a dimly-lit, medium-sized room with grayish-white painted walls, light blue tiled flooring, and a white ceiling.
The bed she lay in was hospital standard, complete with metal bars on either side and a button on the inside that alerted a nurse if she needed assistance.
"Where am I?" The blonde muttered aloud, beginning to reach down and scratch her arm where it began stinging. She froze when the realization hit that she was hooked up to different machines. "What the heck?"
"You lost a lot of blood so they had to give you a transfusion." Her mother walked over to the bedside, blonde hair messy and out of place, a tired expression on her face, and large bandage on her forehead. "And as for the where. . . You're in a hospital underneath the Rosewood's house."
"Hospital? Carrington and Ethan have a hospital under their house?"
"Actually under the town." His masculine voice sounded throughout the room and oddly, brought comfort to the blonde, as Ethan stepped over the threshold. "How're you feeling?"
"Like I got hit by a bus." Elle groaned, fully sitting up and feeling the after effects of what she'd gone through. It didn't take long for her to realize what Ethan said before she asked, "Wait, did you say under the town?"
He let out a nervous chuckle. "Uh, yeah. . ."
Flashbacks of before she blacked out began playing in Elle's mind. "Your eyes changed. . . Before I passed out. Ethan, are you a-"
"Werewolf? Yeah. And you're all witches and warlocks." He looked over to her mother who had remained silent while Ethan talked.
"How'd you know that? On the street you said you knew what we were too."
"Werewolves have a sort of sense that alerts them of supernatural beings." The deep, masculine voice of Malik filled the room and called everyone's attention over to the patriarch of the Rosewood family. "When you guys moved next door we felt a strong sense and knew you were supernaturals of some kind."
"Wow. . ." Elle was dumbfounded and felt kind of used in a way. "But you all acted like you never knew anything. I even had to spell my magic books so Carrington didn't find me out. It was quite a pain."
"Uh, yeah. We didn't know exactly what supernatural you guys were. Whether it be vampire, werewolves like us, or witches. We had to be safe about it until we knew for sure." Ethan added. "The day you made the clock turn back so you were on time to class, I knew what you were."
"And you still pretended? Do you know how hard it is keeping my true self a secret?" Elle began rising from the bed, ignoring the sharp pain shooting up her arm and the deafening roar of the machines as she yanked the wires out of her arm. "Ever since my family moved us here a week ago, I've been miserable not being able to practice my magic or study to further my skill openly. It's been HELL!"
The blonde's electric blue irises flashed with irritation and an almost cobalt shade of blue. Turning to her mother, they turned even darker in shade, almost an azure. "And you and the rest of my family have been keeping Julianna a secret from me! She's a VAMPIRE! And she needs me to find some girl named Abigail Williams, whom-"
At the mention of the name, Malik and Ethan simultaneously let out a very audible gasp that had Elle spinning back around to face them.
"If that vampire gets a hold of Abigail we'll all be in trouble." Malik's amber eyes filled with trepidation.
"That's why she's never going to. And she's not going to get my daughter either." Elle's father stepped into the room in all his six-foot one glory. He wore a dark button up, short sleeved shirt, dark denim jeans, and black shoes that weren't exactly dress shoes, but looked nicer than tennis shoes. His slightly shaggy dirty blonde hair was combed back and gelled, his robin blue eyes held a fierceness in them, and his mouth was twisted in an almost scowl. "Julianna Lennix has another thing coming if she thinks she's going to take my family away from me."
"Dad? I saw you during the battle. But when did you get back? I thought you were doing Magical Counsel business?" Ever since they'd moved, Elle hadn't seen much of her father, due to him being a major member of the Counsel and always needing to leave for days on end and handle the vampire crisis back home. "How is the crisis?"
Samuel frowned, rubbing his chin, all the indication Elle needed to know the crisis probably was worst. "The vampires have stolen more young witches and Jedediah has attacked Counselor Harrison. . ."
Elle and her mother let out a gasp. Counselor George Harrison was one of the eldest and most powerful warlocks in all of New England, head of the Magical Counsel that protected the town, and beloved friend of the Lewis family.
"How is that possible? Harrison is resilient and strong. How was a wannabe dictator vampire able to even get close to him?" Elle had known the mentioned male for her entire life and never witnessed him show any sign of weakness. "Where were his guards?"
Being the most powerful warlock, Harrison normally had body guards around him everywhere he went, no matter the time of day. It shocked Elle that the Counselor had been attacked with so many guards looking out for him.
"A few of Jedediah's followers have been posing as normal witches and warlocks by concealing their aura with a spell." Samuel replied. "No one was able to detect them and so it was easy for them to attack."
"How is George now?" Elle's mother finally spoke after a long period of remaining silent.
"He's stable, but still badly wounded. They tried ripping his heart out, but George was able to evade it. They did inflict a pretty nasty gash on his chest though."
"Is this Jedediah you speak of in any way in league with Julianna?" Malik inquired, taking a step closer to the Lewis family patriarch.
"Well. . . He's the one who changed her. . ." Savannah replied with a frown. "We haven't seen Julianna in years, so it could be possible she is working with him. I just don't understand why she came all the way to Roseville."
"Julianna mentioned going back to Jedediah after you guys abandoned her." Elle muttered, wanting to scowl and lash out at her family for doing such a horrible thing, but after seeing how the brunette acted during the battle, she understood. Remembering her anger from earlier she frowned. "I can't believe you guys never told me about her. I would have understood."
"Honey, we didn't tell you because we wanted to protect you. If you knew of the truth, you would think less of us." Ellen's mother replied gently.
"I think less of you for not telling me. I should have known. From the looks of it, William knew. Julianna even acted as if they already knew each other!" Elle clenched her fists at her sides and turned to her father. "You guys kept me in the DARK!"
"Honey, we were protecting your feelings." Her father began to take a step near her.
"Don't! You guys never thought of my feelings." Elle took a step backwards, anger evident on her face again. "Did it ever occur to you that I might want to know why my mother's twin, my only aunt, was never around? That I'd want to know why a big part of my family wasn't in our lives?"
"Honey, you don't understand. . . Julianna is a maniac that is unpredictable." Savannah spoke softly, trying to reason with her daughter.
"Maybe she's a maniac because her only family turned their backs on her!" Elle shouted in annoyance. "How could you guys have done that? It wasn't her fault she was turned into a vampire. . ."
"Ariella, it is her fault! She fell in love with one of them!" Savannah blurted out, her voice cracking. "It's forbidden for witches to become involved with vampires."
"But, why? What's so wrong about it?" Elle was beginning to feel like there might be some hidden story her parents weren't telling her. "Is it because the vampire might feed on the witch?"
"No. . . It has nothing to do with that. . ." Samuel began, a solemn expression on his face.
"Then, what?" Elle crossed her arms across her chest, cringing when sharpness shot up her wounded arm. "Ow!"
"Elle, maybe you should get back in bed. . . You've been through a big trauma and your body hasn't fully recovered yet." Ethan suddenly walked forward and gently grabbed her by the unharmed arm, a genuinely concerned expression covering his handsome face.
"NO! I want answers." The blonde yanked herself free of the tall male, glaring over at her family. "Why is it forbidden?"
Her mother sighed, running her fingers through her golden hair. "Because of what Abigail Williams did between 1692 and 1693."
"You're referring to the Salem Witch Trials." Elle had learned about the historic event during her Sophomore Year in high school. "Abigail accused over one-hundred and fifty innocent people of witchcraft. In reality, she was the one involved with witchcraft, which she learned from her uncle's slave, Tituba. When Abigail began her accusing, Tituba was one of the first people she accused."
"That's the version they teach in school. But, in the real version, Abigail did so much more. . . It wasn't just about accusing people. . ." Savannah had a far-off look in her eyes, a few tears escaping from the corner of them. "Those poor innocents. . ."
"What did Abigail really do, Mom?" Elle grew nervous to hear the truth.
"She made a-"
"Um, sorry to interrupt-Elle, you should be in bed!" Her brother's familiar voice caused her to spin around.
William Lewis stood at his six-foot one height, his shaggy hair sticking up at odd angles and his blue eyes widening when he spotted his younger sister standing, no IV in and the wound their psychotic aunt inflicted starting to bleed. "And your wound is bleeding. Someone go get a bandage asap!"
Ethan rushed out of the room, William leading Elle back to the hospital bed. Seconds later he returned with a red-haired nurse who held a stack of bandages in her hands and other supplies. The nurse wrapped the young blonde's wound up and then inserted a new IV, the machines she was hooked up to earlier, beginning to hum again.
"There. All set. I must advise for you not to get out of bed again unless you take the machine with you, Miss. Lewis." The red head nodded towards the IV machine that had three wheels on the bottom of it and wasn't connected to the wall like the other ones were. "If your brother hadn't shown up when he did, you would have lost a lot of blood and needed another transfusion."
The nurse then sent a glare at everyone else in the room, disapproval all over her face. "Make sure nothing like this happens again."
With the nurse gone, Elle was able to finally speak to her brother. "Will, how are you? Where have you been? You knew about Juliana, didn't you? Why didn't you tell me? We don't keep secrets! Oh my gosh! Your car! I crashed it. . ."
"Whoa, whoa, slow down. I'm not worried about that damn car! I'm worried about you. How are you? What does your arm feel like? Are you in pain? Do I need to call the nurse back in and get you some pain meds?" The older male had that same concerned expression on his face as when he first entered the room.
Ethan smiled, finding it refreshing how concerned the two siblings were about each other and how quickly they got caught up into their own conversation while everyone else watched in silence, not sure how to jump in.
"I'm fine. Just irritated you and our parents kept this huge secret from me!" Elle was back to being angry again. "You guys should have let me know and this probably wouldn't have happened."
She gestured wildly to her injured arm and her family grimaced.
"Well. . . This seems like a family issue, so Ethan and I will leave you guys to it." Malik remarked, wanting desperately to get away from the awkward scene unfolding before him.
"No. I'd actually like for my family to leave the room. I want to speak to you and Ethan alone." The blonde actually surprised everyone by saying this.
"Um, okay. We'll be down the hall. . ." Her mother led the way out of the room, glancing one last time at her daughter with a sullen expression on her face as she left through the door.
Elle didn't respond to her mother's comment, feeling a little betrayed with the discovery of what they had been keeping from her.
