Prologue: Vampiric Transformation
Moonlight cascading across the manicured lawn, Julianna Lennix's white gown trailed behind her as she made her way up to the large mansion.
Looking up, she noticed the single light on in the downstairs study. Peering out the window was Jedediah Jones, a cheerful expression on his face.
Seeing this expression, Julianna felt guilty of what she was about to do.
She swallowed hard, taking the final steps towards the Mansion and entrance.
She held her hand out shakily and hit the knocker onto the door.
Instantly, she was allowed inside and led to the study.
"Julianna, my love." Jedediah walked over and pulled her into a loving embrace. Sensing her tenseness, he pulled back. "What's wrong?"
"We need to talk. . ." She replied, not being able to look him in the eyes.
"Oh okay. What do you want to talk about?"
"Maybe you should sit down."
"Hmm. . . Alright." He sat in the chair behind the mahogany desk.
Julianna paced back and forth, fiddling with her hands.
"Jedediah, we can't see each other anymore. . ." She spoke slowly.
"What do you mean? Of course we can. We're doing that now." He stood up briskly, walking over to her.
Julianna looked directly into his eyes. "We can't be with each other anymore."
"Julianna, why are you doing this?" He seemed to finally understand what she was saying.
"It's not right, Jed. . . My people need me. . . Your people need you. . ."
Jedediah took her hands in his then saying, "My love, it doesn't matter to me that we're different."
She pulled away from him, not being able to look him in the eyes any longer. "I'm sorry, Jedediah. We can't be together anymore. . ."
She walked towards the door then, frowning sadly.
"NO!" Jedediah shouted, in front of Julianna in less than a second. He grabbed her arms and spun her around to face him. "You will not do this to me."
"Jed, please let go of me. . . You're hurting me. . ." She looked frighteningly up into his eyes.
His grip grew tighter.
"Julianna, you won't do this to me. To us. . . We will be together." As he said this, he opened his mouth wide, white fangs glistening as they slid down.
"Jed, what are you doing? It's against the rules!"
His eyes locked with hers as he bent his head down to her neck. "I'm sorry, my love, but if I can't have you, then no one can."
Julianna screamed out in agony as Jedediah sank his fangs deep into her neck.
* * *
Julianna groaned as she ran from the mansion, her throat feeling like sand paper.
How could he do this? She thought to herself, feeling her body already starting to change from his vampire venom.
She reached the entrance where the iron gates still stood open. Not wanting to stop, she continued running, not at all tired. She quickly realized this to be a side effect of the vampiric transformation.
She continued running, shocked at how much distance she was gaining between her and Jedediah's mansion. Before she knew it, she was back at her own mansion, going inside through the back entrance.
She went upstairs through the kitchen staircase, not making any sound. Another side effect, she assumed.
She found her way to her bedroom, instantly being greeted by bright light as she closed the door behind her.
"And where have you been at?" A familiar voice said from behind her.
She spun around, spotting her fraternal twin sitting directly in the middle of her bed.
"Nowhere, Savannah." Julianna lied, trying to keep calm. She couldn't bring herself to look her sister in the eye. Her twin noticed this immediately and walked over to her.
"What's wrong, Jules?" She looked her sister up and down. "Is that blood on your dress?"
"It's nothing." Julianna turned from her sister and walked over to her closet.
"Who's blood is that, Jules?" Savannah asked persistently. When she didn't answer, Savannah asked, "Julianna, is this your blood?"
She frowned, not being able to answer right away.
"Yes. . . It's mine."
"What happened?"
"Jedediah Jones attacked me. . ."
"What?! Why did he attack you? Why were you even with him?" Savannah's baby blue eyes went wide.
"I. . . I. . ." She didn't know how to explain that she had been dating a vampire.
"Jules, why were you with Jedediah? He's a vampire!"
Julianna frowned again, tears threatening to spill out. "I know, Savannah. . . But it didn't matter. . . Him and I. . . We. . . We were in love. . ."
"That's against the rules! Vampires and witches can't be together!"
"I know, Savannah. . ." Julianna was beginning to grow irritated at her twin and her throat began to feel like sand paper again.
"How long has it been going on? Do our parents know? What were you thinking, Jules? He could have turned you!" Savannah was beginning to shout, pacing back and forth.
She reached up and grabbed the side of her neck, hiding the puncture wounds. "I know, Savannah. That's why I was going to end the relationship tonight. . ."
This stopped Savannah's raving and caused her to look up at her sister. "What?"
"I realized that Jed and I being together wasn't right. . . And so I ended the relationship. That's when he attacked me."
"And by attacking you, you mean what?"
"He. . . He. . . bit me. . ." Julianna paused, holding back the tears already starting to fall. "I have his venom in me, Savannah. . ."
That's when her twin rushed over, pushing her hand away and seeing the puncture wounds directly on the side of her neck.
"I can't believe this. . ." She touched the punctures. "We have to tell Mom and Dad."
"No, Savannah! They won't understand." Julianna's voice raised an octave, her eyes beginning to change from her normal color to a silver back to her normal color again.
"Jules, what is happening to you?" She whispered, fear in her eyes.
Her vision blurred and her throat throbbed endlessly.
Dropping to her knees, Julianna knew Jedediah's venom had worked its way into her entire bloodstream, finally reaching her heart.
She looked up at her twin, reaching out for her.
"He. . . Help. . . me, Savannah. . ." She struggled to say through the convulsions.
Savannah rushed forward to her aid, tripping and busting her lip open.
The throbbing in Julianna's throat became unbearable as she caught the scent of her sister's blood.
"Jules, what're you doing?" Savannah questioned as her sister began climbing to her feet, her mouth open wide, revealing the newly grown fangs.
She shook her head back and forth, regaining herself again. "Savannah, you need to leave. Now!"
Before either could make a move, their parents, along with a bunch of other witches, rushed into the room, magical shields surrounding them.
"What's going on? We sensed a vampire." Their father, Nathaniel, questioned.
"Julianna, what are you doing?" Their mother, Juliette, was the first one to notice the change in their daughter.
"Jedediah attacked her." Savannah stated, standing up. She moved Julianna's black hair away to show them the puncture wounds. "See? He bit her! She's turning into a vampire."
Everyone stared at Julianna in fear, not sure what to do.
"I'm still me! I won't hurt you!" She declared, fangs glistening white as she talked. "I won't hurt you guys. I swear to it!"
"No! You're no longer one of us. . ." Nathaniel couldn't bear to look at her. "You're no longer our daughter."
"But, Dad! I'm still me. I'm still Julianna Lennix!" She couldn't believe he was turning on her. She faced her mother. "You know it's still me, Mom! You must. I'm still the same me!"
Her mother dropped her head, tears flowing silently down her cheeks.
Finally, Julianna turned to her twin sister. "Savannah? It's me, Jules. Your twin. Your best friend?"
"You aren't my sister. . . Julianna was my sister. But you. . . You're not her. . . You're an abomination!" Fear and tears showed in her eyes.
"No. . ." Julianna dropped to her knees, her tears from earlier flowing freely now.
"Julianna, you are no longer welcome in this home. Nor this town." Her father spoke harshly.
Hearing her father say this caused something deep down to snap inside Julianna.
"You would banish your own daughter? Your own flesh and blood?" With one swift movement, Julianna stood to her feet and was in front of her father in less than a second. "I thought I was your little princess, Daddy?"
"You always were the rebellious one, Julianna. We've always had trouble from you, but this time. . . This time you crossed the line. You got involved in something that we can't save you from. You're turning into one of them!" Her father shouted. "Why couldn't you be more like Savannah? We never have problems from her. Especially not her getting involved with vampires."
This caused Julianna to start laughing maniacally. "More like Savannah? You mean scared of life and hiding behind Mommy and Daddy all the time? A common household mouse lives more life than she does!"
"Julianna, that is no way to speak of your twin." Her mother finally looked up, a chastising tone in her voice.
"Oh, so you finally want to act like a mother? Where were you when this all started? You're always more concerned with making sure the town had their supply of potions and spells than concerned with showing any parenting or care to your daughters! Savannah won't say anything, but with this new change, I no longer am afraid to call you out on it!"
"That is enough, Julianna." Her father spoke with firmness. "You will not talk to your mother like that."
"NO. You don't get to tell me what to do anymore! You lost that when you banished me!" Julianna felt the rage start to build up inside her and her throat was starting to throb again. "You will regret ever doing this, Father."
With one quick motion, Julianna rushed forward, pushed Nathaniel's head to the side, and sank her fangs into his neck, blood staining her chin and mouth. It took only moments before she had drank him completely dry, tossing him to the floor like a dirty shirt.
Wiping her mouth with her white sleeve, she felt regret at what she had just done, but that quickly was replaced with rage when she saw all the frightened and angry faces looking at her.
"Monster!"
"Abomination!"
"Demon!"
The crowd started shouting and calling her horrible things.
Julianna glared at them angrily as she spoke, "You are the monsters! And one day you will pay."
With that, Julianna jumped out the window, landing on her feet gracefully, realizing her vampiric transformation to be complete.
