The Signs
On the way to Robyn and Atlanta's house, Kat and I learned that extended awkward silences had no effect on the health, Clayton. All he had said the entire way to their apartment was that the girl had also asked to see Robyn. I didn't know how the girl knew my sister, and I didn't even know if Robyn had even been at the lake when she woke up, but I didn't question it. I would wait until I spoke with her in person.
When we finally reached Robyn and Atlanta's door, Clayton knocked on it smartly and it swung open after a few seconds of silence. Atlanta had been the one to open the door, and when she saw us with Clayton, a puzzled look came across her face. "What's going on?" she asked. "Rhea, we heard about what happened at the lake. People are saying it was you they found. Robyn's been worried sick!"
Clayton started to speak, "Hello, ma'am. I am a representative-"
"We're here to get Robyn," Kat interrupted. I could tell she had been miffed by the silence, and now she couldn't stand it any longer.
Atlanta narrowed her eyes. "What for?"
Clayton tried again, "We-" but he was once again interrupted by Kat.
"We're going to the hospital to see the girl from the lake," Kat said.
Clayton seemed irritated at being interrupted, but I could tell that he was also glad he hadn't had to explain anything.
Atlanta turned to face the inside of the apartment and called out, "Robyn! Door!" She turned around to face us again and she titled her head to the side. "Why does Robyn need to be there?"
"She's asked for us," I said before Kat or Clayton could.
"But why does she want you guys?" she pressed.
"That's what we're hoping to find out," I said as my sister appeared beside Atlanta in the doorway. When she looked at me, a look of relief came across her face as she embraced me in a hug.
After we explained everything to Robyn, she looked as confused as I felt, but she grabbed her coat and slipped it over her shoulders.
"I'm coming, too," Atlanta said as she pulled her own jacket over her body.
Clayton looked like her wanted to argue, but he wisely kept his mouth shut. If he got Atlanta mad, he'd be the one waking up in a hospital bed every morning.
~~~~~~~~~~
The walk to the hospital wasn't long, but it seemed to go on for miles, due to the adrenaline rushing through my body. I was light-headed and tired, and my stomach seemed empty of the sandwich I had eaten that morning.
"How much longer?" I groaned.
"About a hundred yards less than the last time you asked," Atlanta said, irritated. I couldn't help but think of her as a parent scolding their child for asking the same question in a large car ride. Then what Lyra said came back to me. Why did I remember these things, but never had seen them or experienced them before?
I guess Atlanta was expecting a witty, snarky, sassy retort from me, because when I didn't say anything, she look sidelong at me and said, "Are you feeling alright?"
"Sure," I said. "Some random girl that no one's ever met before comes out of a lake forbidden to swim in and wants to speak with me, my sister, and my best friends. What's not normal about that?"
Robyn snorted out a laughed as the tall, white, majestic hospital came into view. There was a large sign announcing it as the Omega City Hospital in big gold letters against a black backdrop. It was about three of four stories high, and it was plastered with gleaming glass windows. There was a large revolving door in the middle of two regular swinging doors at the entrance.
When we came up to the revolving door, I was the first to go through, taking three laps around in it before exciting inside the waiting area where a small brown-haired girl about twelve sat behind a desk as the receptionist. I could imagine her doing the same job in twenty years, with her hair in a tight bun and glasses on the tip of her nose with those strings attached to them so she could never lose them.
Once again it hit me that I had never seen an old receptionist before, but I could still imagine it. Lyra was right. As much as I loved the city, there was definitely something fishy about Omega.
Author's Note: Sorry this one was so short guys! The picture is one of the girl's eye. Speaking of the girl, what are some good names that you think hers should be? I was thinking something that starts with an 'R', but it's up to you. Just because you suggest it, does not mean that's what it will be.
