Chapter 1
I guess I should start by saying that I never asked for this to happen, in fact if I could change one thing about my life I would stop myself from reading IT. No I'm not talking about the Stephen king novel, I'm talking about the diary of the 44th president of America, Barack Obama.
Before I get to that though I guess I should introduce myself. Hi my name is ashnah creevly and I'm 15 years old. I work as a maid for lord bingan and I want to be an astronaut. Yeah I know it's impossible humanity gave up space travel almost 300 years ago, but a girl can dream right?
Back in the old days lots of things were different. For starters there wasn't earthquakes and eruptions almost every day in Africa and there was A lot less poverty. Also humanity was on the brink of..... Well I'm not really sure what exactly but I'm pretty sure it was understanding or finding the meaning of life and curing all illnesses. Well whatever it was something went terribly wrong and humanity plummeted. Only lords, barons and dukes lived comfortably after that, well except for the servants, that is where I come in.
You see, while servants have to work hard it is the best kind of work because you get to live where there's running water and food, and if your employer was really nice you might learn how to read. Lord bingan is one of those employers. He's the kind of man that gives candy to babies and ice cream money to kids he sees on the street. So any ways I guess no one was surprised when he took in the orphan baby, namely me.
I was taken care of and more importantly, educated. So as soon as my chores were finished, I would rush to the library and read to my hearts content. It became a sort of joke after awhile. "Where's ash?"someone would ask. "In her room" they would reply. You see when lord bingan found out how much I loved books he had my bed and trunk moved toward the empty storage closet so I could be closer to the books. After awhile people even began to call me scroll-head but I didn't mind, as long as I had my books I was happy.
Anyways moving back to the subject, one day I was trying to find a new book when I found a folded up piece of paper tucked in between two books. It was weird, there wasn't much paper around nowadays, seeing as most people couldn't write or read. I unfolded it and saw it was a map of some kind. Then I realized what it was. A layout of the library. Only the layout was bigger then the actual library. Weird right? Than I noticed the little detail that changed my life. A door at the of the storage closet. The supposed "door" led Ito another chamber that was bigger than the library itself! Only it was impossible because the other side of the storage closet led to outside. I eventually decided it was a prank or maybe there used to be another room attached to the storage room when the building was first built but not anymore. It still haunted me through every waking moment.
Until one day I had a dream. I never have dreams, not ever. People say I just don't remember them, but they're wrong. Anyways in this dream, I was reading at the table closest to the window in the library when a lady walked up to me. She was obviously wealthy, because she was dressed head to toe in the most exquisite red silk I had ever seen embroidered with golden swirls and pictures, only the pictures were gruesome. One was a man cutting open a child as if for sacrifice, another was eating what looked like the severed heads of women. Another scene depicted people lining up to use the chopping block, bloody bodies piled up on one side and unattached heads on the other. I was so engrossed in her dress I barely heard her when she spoke. She wasn't whispering she just wasn't yelling either. She said four words "listen to the parchment " what ?
" Listen to it" she hissed it this time. Yes she literally hissed it. She leaned in when she said it too and I caught a whiff of her perfume. It smelled... Well interesting. I'm pretty sure it should have been called rotting corpses for her. the stench of it alone was enough to make me want to vomit. however i still didn't understand her advice, so surpressing the urge to gag I opened my mouth to talk. no sound came out. instead the lady, now walking away turned around and said one last thing "trust me". Then the library started dissolving, the last words the lady said echoing through my head until i sat up in my bed breathing heavily. it had been my first dream but certainly not the last.
