xxi. project execution

The sound of the gun firing had always been so satisfying to Jungkook.

He smiled innocently at Jimin, pointing the gun at the door, waiting for Namjoon to show. He put a finger over his lips, leaving Jimin shaking in the corner. There wasn't anything Jimin could do, even if he wanted to.

"Feel free to look away," Jungkook said, never taking his eyes off Jimin as the door started to open. "The sight won't be pretty."

Jimin shut his eyes as he heard the gunshot, covering his ears as the shot rang out the second that the door opened, a strangled cry escaping his mouth as Jungkook grabbed his arm harshly, grinning at him psychotically.

Hoseok had been right in warning him.

"You're joking."

Hoseok shook his head, gesturing to the files on his desk. "I'm telling you this because I care about you and Namjoon. I managed to get the bounty off my head, but this Jeon Jungkook fellow, I don't have any way of stopping him. I found out too late for Seokjin."

"I don't believe you," Jimin gritted. "He wouldn't kill Namjoon and me. He sought us out, told us himself! How could Minjun be plotting to kill us?"

"He wasn't plotting to kill you guys," Hoseok answered. "He was paid to do so—two different things. Minjun isn't his name. I told you already. It's Jungkook. Jeon Jungkook."

"You're lying!"

Hoseok pressed his lips together. "You don't want it to be true, do you?"

"Because it's not." Jimin snapped, folding his arms. "How could he be lying about his emotions? Why would he lie about having feelings for me? It doesn't make sense."

"Does it not?" Hoseok questioned, arching an eyebrow. "You and Namjoon do the exact same thing. The only difference is, you don't kill people for it. Jungkook and Yoongi, it's their job. They derive pleasure from breaking hearts and ending people like us."

Perhaps it had been Jimin wanting to give Jungkook the benefit of the doubt. Maybe it was the way Hoseok, despite knowing Yoongi was out to kill him, still wanted to be with him and had gone through great lengths to do so, which made Jimin reluctant to accept the truth. He hadn't even bothered to look at the files Hoseok had tried to give him.

Now, his lover was dead at the doorway, and he was about to be next.

"Jungkook, please don—"

Jungkook's eyes flashed towards him. "How do you know my name?"

Jimin winced as Jungkook's hold on him tightened, managing to stammer, "H-hoseok told me about what you and Yoongi do earlier today. What Taehyung did to Seokjin."

To his surprise, Jungkook let him go, a confused expression replacing his formerly thrilled one. Jimin's eyes gazed at Namjoon's lifeless body before immediately looking away, attempting to wipe the tears spilling in his face. Jungkook continued to look at him, devoid of sympathy at Jimin's suffering.

"That bastard snitched then," Jungkook's jaw clenched. "Stupid investigator. What I don't get, Jimin, is if you knew what I was going to do, why did you still let me in?"

"I didn't believe him," Jimin whispered. Jungkook burst into laughter, looking at Jimin incredulously.

"You didn't believe him?" Jungkook echoed, wiping the corners of his eyes. "Oh God, Jimin, just how in love are you with me that you ignored the warning given to you? Pathetic."

Pain flared up Jimin's shoulder as the bullet ricocheting off Jungkook's gun passed through it, his screams only causing Jungkook to laugh harder. Jimin fell to his knees, his free hand over his shoulder, staining it upon contact. Jungkook only looked at him impassively, shaking his head.

"What happened to the Park Jimin that broke people's hearts, hm?" Jungkook hummed, forcing Jimin up. "When you first found me, it was your intent. You couldn't resist the sad, lonely, helpless boy sulking to himself in Lenocinium. Look where that has gotten you? The love of your life, dead, and the second one ready to finish you off."

"You don't have to do this," Jimin said, whimpering in pain as Jungkook pulled Jimin closer to him. For a split second, Jimin could see the hesitation in his eyes, the slackening of intent. "You couldn't have been lying about not feeling something. You don't have to do this. I won't tell anyone, I promise, j-just please, K-kook don't do this."

"I'd always wondered how a nickname would sound coming from your voice," Jungkook voice lowered. "But I have someone else waiting for me, and I'm not going to let him down. He's killing Hoseok, I'm killing you, and then we'll start building our future. I've waited for him for years. I won't let the opportunity go because of someone like you."

He must be talking about Min Yoongi.

"Yoongi won't kill him," Jimin interjected, looking away as Jungkook's expression hardened. "Hoseok won't be killed."

"And how would you know that?" Jungkook nearly growled, eyes flashing in anger as he pressed the gun against Jimin's head. "You don't work with us."

"Hoseok told me so," Jimin answered, gulping at the feel of the cold, metallic gun on his head. "Y-you know he doesn't care that Yoongi was assigned to kill him, right? He wants Yoongi for himself."

"You're lying," Jungkook sneered. "Yoongi went to kill him a few minutes before I made my way towards you and Namjoon. Your friends will end up the same way that you will. Jung Hoseok isn't an exception."

"I'm not," Jimin whispered, whimpering once more. "Please believe me. I wouldn't lie to you."

Jungkook chuckled, his eyes darkening. "Just like you wouldn't lie to all those other girls, huh?"

"You're different," Jimin pleaded, noticing another streak of falter in Jungkook's expression. "I know you don't want to do this. Please, Jungkook. Things could work out between us."

Jungkook's eyes narrowed. "I killed the love of your life. There's nothing that can make us work out. Switching loyalties, already Park? What a shame. Your love would not be pleased with you right now."

Jimin yelped as Jungkook suddenly leaned in, taking a moment to kiss Jimin, leaving Jimin momentarily dazed before his eyes focused on Jungkook once more. A pitiful look prevailed in Jungkook's face, half a smile lighting his face— the smile of a cold-hearted, merciless killer.

"I'll be your last," Jungkook smiled wider as he readied the gun. "For the record, Jimin, you were always my favorite."

He pulled the trigger.

As Jungkook threw Jimin's lifeless body next to Namjoon's, he ignored the stab of pain in his chest, forcing himself to smile that he'd completed his mission. He made a mental note to thank Yoongi sometime later for being that final push. Without Yoongi, Jungkook knew he wouldn't have been able to finish his tasks.

You know, Yoongi is only a couple of floors from me. Top penthouse, if I remember correctly.

Making up his mind, he smiled as he dialed the number on his phone.

"Park Jimin and Kim Namjoon have been terminated."

He hung up the phone just as quickly, glancing pitifully at Jimin and Namjoon's bodies before finally walking out, walking towards Yoongi.

🥀

"What took you so long, sweetheart?"

Yoongi pressed his lips together, feeling his heart ignite at Hoseok's words. He walked into the room, eyeing Mingi sitting on the couch, giving him a lopsided, awkward smile. Yoongi bared his teeth at him, giving Mingi a menacing look, to which Mingi jumped back in surprise before shaking his head and maintaining his composure.

"We've been waiting for you, Yoongi," Mingi said, without skipping a beat. "I'm sure you know why."

"I didn't think you wanted a front-row seat to Hoseok's murder," Yoongi remarked sarcastically. Hoseok raised an eyebrow.

"You're not going to kill me, Yoongi," Hoseok sighed, shaking his head. "I told you this yesterday. Nothing has changed from then and now."

"To hell, it hasn't," Yoongi sneered, taking out his gun. Hoseok looked unimpressed, eyes flitting to Mingi, who looked at Yoongi questioningly.

"Have you not received a call from your organization yet?" Mingi inquired, adjusting his glasses. "I would have thought by now; you would have."

Yoongi paused, arching an eyebrow at the news. Instinctively, he reached for his phone, and without letting his eyes off Mingi, he dialed Jooyoung, who immediately picked up.

"Yoongi, I was just about to call you!" she chirped, voice staining with relief. "You haven't killed Jung Hoseok yet, right?"

"Correct," Yoongi responded, his eyes fixed on Mingi's. "About to. Why?"

"Don't do it," Jooyoung said. "There's been a change of plans. President's daughter's pregnant, and she urged to call off the mission. She did say she'd give you the money regardless of working all this time."

"Oh, you've got to be kidding me," Yoongi rolled his eyes. "What are the chances that she isn't pregnant?"

"It's a risk I'm unwilling to take," Jooyoung's voice hardened. "Do not kill Jung Hoseok. He remains alive."

As Yoongi hung up the call, his gaze fixated on Hoseok's and at the smirk that was embedded into Hoseok's lips. Mingi nodded once, already knowing what the call was about.

"I'm a father to be, aren't I?" Hoseok laughed, leaning against his desk. "At least I don't have to worry about myself or you going missing for that matter. You should be thanking me right now."

"Thanking?" Yoongi scoffed, lowering his gun. "Why the fuck would I thank you when you've taken the opportunity from me carrying out my job?"

Hoseok's lips curled into a smile. "I gave you the option yesterday, and you refused. You're still getting money out of it. Aren't you a lucky one?"

Despite all the anger and disbelief coursing through Yoongi, there was one prevalent emotion that ascended over the others, one that rid Yoongi of any attempts to speak. He looked at Hoseok, heart thundering in his chest as his lips unconsciously let out a sigh of relief.

Alleviated coursed through Mingi as he noticed Yoongi's change in character. If anything, Yoongi looked more confused now. From the swirling emotions that Yoongi no doubt had going on in him to not knowing what to do now that his original mission was called off. Yoongi was a lost, aimless individual. He'd come with the intent to kill, and now he didn't have anything to do.

Still, Mingi knew that Yoongi was far more observant than he was given credit for. It was clear as day that Hoseok was giving Yoongi an unspoken choice, now that Hoseok was someone that knew too much about Project Heartbreak.

"What are you planning on doing?" Yoongi finally asked Hoseok. "Answer me, honestly."

Hoseok hummed. "A vacation sounds about nice right now. Lay low for a while, complete things remotely."

"And when people realize that Rose lied about her pregnancy, then what?" Yoongi inquired. "You know this won't hold forever. You may be immune right now, but if proven false, Project Heartbreak will hunt you down."

"If that happens, Yoongi, I'll release everything I know to the public," Mingi cut in. "Kill any one of us, both of us— doesn't matter. There's no way for your organization to win in the long run. Only if you play by our rules."

"You sons of bitches thought of everything." Yoongi scoffed, shaking his head. "All for what? So that Hoseok could have his hands on someone that doesn't exist? Give me a fucking break."

Hoseok walked towards Yoongi, hands reaching out to grab Yoongi's arms. In one swift motion, he pulled Yoongi towards him, an infectious smile playing at his lips. Yoongi's breath sharpened at the sudden proximity, his eyes raking over Hoseok, though his body remained unmoving.

"Are you opposed to the idea?"

It was a simple question, yet one that held so much meaning to it. The answer should have been a resounding no. It wasn't like Yoongi to remain silent when he didn't want something, much less someone. Yet, his mind could come up with no words as Hoseok held him, the only sound swarming in his ears that of his pounding heart, one Yoongi had no control over.

"It's okay to admit that you like me," Hoseok chuckled, leaning closer to Yoongi. "I know your records show you've never fallen for anyone, and you may not know what feelings are, but your hesitation should give you a clue."

Actions were louder than words, and Yoongi's inactions were proving more than he wanted to admit. Hoseok brought a hand up to Yoongi's cheek, gazing at him fondly as he caressed the younger's cheek, smiling softly. Sure, this expression was one that Yoongi had seen often, especially in Jungkook, but seeing it in Hoseok's face felt remotely different. When Jungkook looked at him like that, Yoongi couldn't help but feel guilt, but when Hoseok looked at him, it felt right.

Hoseok dipped his head lower, giving Yoongi a questioning look. At Yoongi's slight nod, Hoseok closed the gap between them, kissing Yoongi as if it were the last day on Earth. Yoongi's mind blanked at Hoseok's advances, feeling himself responding in ways he hadn't thought were possible for him.

Kisses for Yoongi were nothing more than the actions of two lips coming together. It was something that he had mastered, something that helped trap all of his targets. Every time that Yoongi had kissed someone, there was always an ulterior motive behind it— either for his pleasure (in Jungkook's case) or to help with making his targets vulnerable. That's how it had been with Hoseok at first.

But now, Yoongi was met with the foreign feeling of genuinely wanting to kiss Hoseok back. For the first time, he felt that feeling that he'd always made fun of when Jungkook would mention it. He was feeling the burst of butterflies in his stomach, almost as if there were fireworks around him. Yoongi had never expected to have these feelings bursting in him, but strangely enough, they felt right.

With Hoseok, it felt right.

Everything had faded into nothing, but background noise as Yoongi and Hoseok kissed, leaving Yoongi dazed. How could something that had once meant nothing to Yoongi feel so right coming from Hoseok? Coming from a literal target, someone that he was supposed to woo and kill? Maybe it was different now that he had been ordered not to kill Hoseok, but everything that he'd told Jungkook seemed to have flown out of his senses, and all Yoongi could focus on was the loving, tender feel of Hoseok on him, a feeling that was strangely addicting.

Yoongi would be lying if he said he didn't enjoy it. Even more, if he didn't admit he more than enjoyed it— he reveled in it.

"What the fuck is going on here?"

Yoongi's heart stopped at the familiar voice, wincing slightly at the intensity of it. He could feel Hoseok smile against his lips before formally pulling away, making sure to keep his hands hovering near Yoongi's. Yoongi turned towards Jungkook, looking away at the visible hurt in his expression, before clearing his throat.

"What does it look like?" Hoseok asked nonchalantly before Yoongi could say anything. "I'm kissing my boyfriend."

"Stop bullshitting." Jungkook gritted his teeth. "You should be dead by now, Hoseok. Yoongi, why isn't he?"

"Isn't it obvious, Jungkook?" Hoseok smirked, pulling Yoongi to him. "It's because he wants to be with me."

Hoseok was only making this worse, and Yoongi knew he was doing it on purpose. It didn't take a genius to figure out that Jungkook had an attachment to Yoongi, especially not now with how visibly hurt and angry he was at the scene he'd walked into.

"You knew he was going to show up, didn't you?" Yoongi murmured, looking at Hoseok. "That's why you kissed me. You used me to hurt him."

"If he's here, it means that Jimin and Namjoon are dead," Hoseok responded bluntly.  "I warned Jimin, and he didn't listen."

Jungkook gave Hoseok a hint of a smile. "That was on him and his stupidity. No one told him not to believe you."

"I'm surprised that you didn't save Jimin, at least," Hoseok commented. "The way Jimin talked to me about you, I assumed you shared some feelings in return."

Jungkook's jaw clenched. "It doesn't matter if I did or not. I made my choice the moment my future was made clear, my future with Yoongi."

Yoongi still couldn't find it in himself to talk. He didn't know how to anymore. The person who had loved him for years, the person he'd told that he would try to love was standing in front of him. The person had walked into him kissing someone that should have already been dead, and now that same person was taunting him, and Hoseok was enjoying every second of it.

Jungkook's eyes drifted towards Mingi's, who'd been watching silently the scene unfold. He raised an eyebrow at Mingi before his expression hardened. Mingi raised his arms, gesturing towards himself.

"I bear no arms, Jungkook," Mingi said, trying his best to remain calm. "I'm of no threat."

"You've always been a threat," Jungkook answered, taking out his gun. "You and Jung Hoseok, who should be lying on the floor, in a pool of his own blood. Yoongi, why the fuck are you still hesitating?"

"I can't kill him, Jungkook."

Jungkook's eyebrows furrowed. "What do you mean you can't kill him? Just pull the fucking trigger. I know you have your gun with you; I see it right there. It's not hard."

Yoongi shook his head, swallowing harshly. "Jooyoung's orders. No one can lay a hand on him."

"You're lying," Jungkook's eyes narrowed. "Why are you lying? Hoseok knows too much. Even if the President's daughter called off the assignment, Hoseok knows too much to be let off the hook."

Yoongi took cautious steps towards Jungkook, ignoring as Hoseok pulled at his sleeve. Jungkook jumped back at Yoongi's advances, his hands holding up the gun. Yoongi could feel himself drowning in guilt at the boy's confused expression, disbelief, and lingering rage.

"When did she tell you this?" Jungkook demanded, watching Yoongi warily. "When?"

"A few minutes ago," Yoongi answered honestly, only causing Jungkook to become more emotional.

"Then why were you kissing him?" Jungkook's voice rose in pitch, waving his gun in Hoseok's direction. "Why were you in his arms?"

"He kissed me!" Yoongi answered, walking closer to Jungkook. "I didn't do anything."

"But you didn't pull away," Jungkook said flatly.

"He didn't pull away because he wants me, Jungkook," Hoseok's eyes sparkled with cockiness. "You could tell, couldn't you? When you walked in. You've never seen that expression on Yoongi's face before, not even when you've kissed him."

Hoseok was loving the amount of power he had in the situation, and it was beginning to pain Yoongi. There was no way to tell what expression Yoongi had when Hoseok pulled away from him, but at the very least, Jungkook could piece Yoongi's continuous hesitancy to everything. The person who loves sees their loved one through a different lens, so if Yoongi did have an unrecognizable expression on his face, Jungkook would have detected it.

In the end, Jungkook would know any anomaly that arose in Yoongi. Unfortunately, the boy knew Yoongi more than Yoongi knew himself.

"Shut up!" Jungkook yelled, pointing the gun in his direction. "Yoongi said we would have a future together. He helped me commit to the mission. He's the reason why I succeeded in killing Jimin. He said he'd try for me."

"And you believed someone who's trained to lie to those who love him?" Hoseok asked, tilting his head to the side. "Someone who could easily manipulate you into security?"

At that moment, Yoongi knew it had clicked in Jungkook's mind.

"You lied to me?" Jungkook whispered, looking at Yoongi. Yoongi knew he could lie to Jungkook, tell him that Hoseok didn't know what he was talking about, that Hoseok knew nothing about what was going through Yoongi. That all Hoseok was doing was trying to make him purposefully angry.

He couldn't find it in him to do so.

Jungkook's eyes widened in realization at Yoongi's silence, his eyes beginning to glisten with tears. Yoongi could only look helplessly as the first tear slipped down Jungkook's cheek, one after another.

"You fucking lied." Jungkook's voice shook.

"I was trying to keep you alive," Yoongi said, earning a scoff from Jungkook. "What you were thinking was foolish! You would have died if I hadn't told you anything."

"You know, Jimin tried talking me out of killing him."

Jungkook's voice had gotten quieter, more forceful. A dead expression settled onto his face, eyes cold and emptied of emotion, though the tears continued to run. Jungkook's jaw was permanently clenched, animosity consuming his entire being.

"He told me that you wanted Yoongi for yourself," Jungkook pointed in Hoseok's direction. "Told me that we could work things out between the two of us, even with Namjoon dead. I killed him because I was so certain that you'd be waiting for me on the other side, Yoongi."

"Jungkook, stop this," Mingi said, taking a step towards him. "You're better than this."

"Shut up!" Jungkook yelled, focusing his attention on Mingi. "You don't even know me. This was all because of you!

Before anyone could react, Jungkook shot Mingi, not caring what part of the body it inflicted. Fortunately, Mingi had been expecting Jungkook to try to aim at him, and he ducked, the bullet missing his head by a few centimeters. Yoongi turned to Jungkook, who held a wild, crazed look in his eyes.

"You could have killed him," Yoongi muttered in disbelief. "Are you insane?"

Jungkook tensed at Yoongi's words. "Maybe I am."

"Stop. This isn't you."

Jungkook laughed humorlessly. "If you're too much of a coward to kill Hoseok, then I will do it myself."

Yoongi immediately tackled Hoseok to the ground without thinking, cursing loudly as the bullet meant for Hoseok scraped his arm. Hoseok stared at Yoongi wide-eyed, gazing at Yoongi as if he were crazy. Yoongi gritted his teeth as he pushed himself off Hoseok, noticing the stain in his sleeves. Jungkook watched the scene unfold, astonished, a surprise that melted into anger.

"You saved him." Jungkook spat, in awe and disbelief. Yoongi swallowed the need to scream from the pain that the bullet embedded in him was causing.

"I told you, Jooyoung said he was off-limits," Yoongi winced as he tried to get himself to stand. "You try it; you'll be going against Project Heartbreak's orders."

"If Hoseok matters to you that much, you can go down along with him." Jungkook deadpanned, reloading his gun. Without thinking, Yoongi took out his own gun, aiming at Jungkook's leg, and shooting.

"Sorry, sweetheart," Yoongi murmured as Jungkook fell to the floor. "I can't let you kill him."

Jungkook said nothing, his face contorted with pain and surprise that Yoongi hadn't hesitated in shooting him. Yoongi looked at him pityingly, muttering his apologies before turning to Hoseok.

"Get out of here," Yoongi said. "All I have to do is call Jooyoung. She'll fix the situation here."

Mingi walked towards them, holding the gun that had once been in Jungkook's hands. "If you want to make your escape, do it now. They'll find Jungkook eventually. You and Yoongi can make a break for it."

Hoseok nodded, looking at Yoongi. "Are you coming with me?"

"My duty lies to Project Heartbreak," Yoongi answered, a small smile playing on his lips. "Let me get my affairs in order. Right now, people are injured, including me. Go."

"But—" Hoseok began to protest. Mingi silenced him, giving Yoongi a nod.

"We're going," Mingi answered for Hoseok. He took out a card, handing it to Hoseok. "When you're ready, let me know. At the very least, keep in contact."

Yoongi nodded, tucking the card into his pocket. Hoseok frowned, glaring at Jungkook, who refused to look at any of them in the eye before looking once more at Yoongi. Yoongi beamed at Hoseok, fingers cupping Hoseok's face.

"Stop looking like at me like I just kicked a puppy," Yoongi kissed Hoseok's lips, letting him go. "Now go."

He watched Mingi and Hoseok disappear, leaving him with Jungkook. Yoongi pulled his phone, dialing Jooyoung's number, alerting her of the situation before hanging up and walking towards Jungkook. He held out his uninjured arm to Jungkook, who couldn't face him. When Jungkook didn't accept his hand, Yoongi sighed, sitting down next to Jungkook.

It was a funny sight, really. Yoongi had never been injured while on the job, and the one time he was shot at, it was someone he confided and trusted in. He'd done the same to his partner, and if Yoongi were honest, Jungkook was in a much dangerous state than he was. Yoongi had shot Jungkook in the thigh to stop his rampage, while he had received a shot to the arm in attempts to save Hoseok from death.

His first injury was because of him wanting to protect another man.

"You should have just left me here," Jungkook croaked, looking at his wound. "You should be hating me right now."

"I should, shouldn't I?" Yoongi agreed, stifling a laugh. Jungkook closed his eyes.

"I went rogue," Jungkook said. "I let my feelings get the best of me."

"Did the shot to the thigh zone you back to reality?" Yoongi chuckled, shaking his head. "Jooyoung's on the way. I'm not letting you die anytime soon, Jeon. Taehyung would have my head if I let you."

Jungkook looked away. "I saw the way you looked at him, Yoongi. You've never looked at me like that before."

"And I'm still here next to you," Yoongi smiled, gesturing at Jungkook. "Keeping you company. Making sure you stay alive. I could have left you here, gotten myself some help, but whatever hoseok and I have, well, that's something that I have yet to explore. You, on the other hand, you're one of the few people I trust in this world."

Jungkook cracked a smile. "I know, Yoongi. I know."

No more words were spoken between them, each of them basking in each other's presence. Though they both lay injured, there was an odd sense of serenity in the turmoil that had just happened. Their originals orders were to play executioner, and that's what Yoongi and Jungkook had done every time they took on assignments like these.

Execution.

A feat that sounds easy but in actuality requires much thought and mediation. Yoongi could only properly execute if he had control of the situation— feelings, people, everything. This situation was one he had lost completely. His position of power had been overtaken, bruising his prodigy status, but seemingly enough, Yoongi was fine with that. In all his years at Project Heartbreak, at him laughing as his victims' hearts broke, at him shooting them without thinking, he'd finally found someone that managed to capture his attention.

"How'd Hoseok manage to pull it off?"

Yoongi looked up at Jungkook, smiling softly.

"Let's say that if someone doesn't pop a baby in nine months, he'll be in trouble."

Through Jung Hoseok, Yoongi had given up his role as the executioner, using it one last time only to nullify the romantic bond that Jungkook and he could have had. Still, Yoongi had watched Hoseok go, choosing to stay with his partner in crime, someone whose friendship he valued above all else, someone he truly loved platonically.

Yoongi laced his hand with Jungkook, giving it a reassuring squeeze. Jungkook smiled softly, shaking his head at Yoongi's gesture, rolling his eyes. Yoongi laughed, winking at him before they both fell into laughter.

Hoseok would come back for Yoongi just the same as Yoongi had stayed for Jungkook.

For now, the lingering promise of return would keep Yoongi at bay, the final verdict in the continuous execution of his life.
