Risk, danger, and excitement inform adventure fiction, which focuses on a particular challenge, quest, or journey which the protagonist, or hero, must undertake and successfully complete. Adventure fiction includes a villain or other antagonistic forces which the hero thwarts with wits and ingenuity, rather than violence.

GIRL POWER
Chicklit

Chick lit is modern fiction about the lives and romantic problems of young women, usually written by women. While romantic elements often exist in ChickLit, stories typically focus on the female protagonist’s relationships with friends or family.

AVANT-GARDE
Contemporary Literature

ContemporaryLit are stories that take place in the present day and in which characters encounter modern-day difficulties and issues. It reflects current trends in life and culture and generally features reality-based plots with strong characters and a believable story. Settings usually keep to the modern era.

It contains characters that behave the way most readers would, the characters must be believable, the story is set in the present, the setting is a real place or at least seems like a real place, and the events are events that could happen in real life.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT
Diverse Lit

DiverseLit is a campaign made to support and promote Wattpad stories that include characters who are part of a minority group that are not typically featured in literature today. The minority groups these characters are involved in can be, but are in no way limited to, disabilities, body types, illnesses, disorders, sexual identities, religions, and nationalities. To sum it up, this campaign promotes stories with characters with any attributes that are not commonly written about.

In the simplest terms, a humor story is one written with the intent to make audiences laugh or to induce amusement or laughter. A humor story will have the exact sames elements as a normal story. You will still have a plot, characters, and scenes. You will still need to develop your plot and have character arcs. The largest difference is that the rule of funny applies, which gives you more leeway for events than a serious book

LGBTQ+

First, a book must have a main character who identifies as LGBTQ or deals with LGBTQ issues. Second, those issues must be overt and central to the plot.

CLOAK AND DAGGER
Mystery & Thriller

Mystery stories feature a protagonist who investigates a crime, problem, puzzle, or some sort of unknown. The protagonist, whether an actual detective or an amateur, often struggles to achieve his or her goals and endures various psychological and physical obstacles, but gradually deduces the solution through facts, logic, and working backward.

While thriller stories also focus on uncovering mysteries, they move at a faster pace and are driven by action, tension, excitement, and violence. Thriller stories are often quite sensational, and involve larger-scale criminal offenses with higher stakes, such as conspiracy or espionage. Thrillers also include dangerous situations that the protagonist endures while trying to solve the greater problem.

New Adult

There's a cusp between young adult stories and adult stories, and it's called New Adult. It's not a genre but a demographic, and generally appeals to readers between 18 and 25 years of age. Why is this necessary?

While young adult tends to touch on themes such as bullying, high school, peer pressure, family issues, and the struggles of first loves, adult fiction usually includes the other end of the spectrum from a parent's point of view. That delicate in-between stage of transitioning into adulthood from teenhood has never seemed to fit under either of those umbrellas, and thus, New Adult was born!

The genre aims to answer questions in ways no one has ever thought with eccentric yet amazing storylines that will have you shook.

Teen Fiction

Teen Fiction traces the ins, outs, ups and downs of growing up through the emotional, physical, and social experiences of a teenaged or young adult protagonist with which readers identify. Teen Fiction often takes place within a high school setting and may serve as a “coming-of-age” story, documenting the awkwardness of adolescence and the challenge of coping with difficult social issues.

Werewolf & Vampire

Werewolf fiction concerns itself primarily with the subject of werewolves or other human/beast forms from folklore and monster myths. Werewolf fiction often focuses on lycanthropy - the supernatural transformation of a human into a wolf - and its repercussions, but may also include associated drama within the hierarchy of the pack and the struggle for the protagonist to repress primal impulses and bestial urges.

Vampire fiction concerns itself primarily with the subject of vampires who feed on living creatures in order to survive. While vampires were traditionally horrific and villainous, modern interpretations often reimagine the fanged bloodsuckers as more nuanced and complex entities. Vampire fiction usually deals with the human protagonist’s encounter with a vampire, their romantic relationship with a vampire, or his or her transformation into a vampire themselves. Other conflicts may include vampire-hunting or drama within the vampire coven.

General Fiction

General Fiction is any story that is composed of more than one genre but could also mean a story that does not fit into a specific genre. It concentrates on the daily experiences and conflicts of a protagonist, usually an adult, with detailed characterization and background.
