Chapter 48 - Farewell and new beginning

A/N: This is the last chapter before the MPREG special. The book ends here for all who do not want to read MPREG. For everyone else, it continues in the next chapter.

Although my stepdad wanted to come over the next day and introduce himself properly, he didn't show up. I thought, hey I suspected that anyway and that I didn't expect anything else. But then I found out that he had been in a car accident. The cab he was in when he was on his way here went out of control.

After it had rained on and off for the past few days, the roads were wet when it began to freeze in the early morning, turning the road into an ice rink. The cab driver tried to avoid a pickup truck that was coming towards them. The cab driver lost control of his car and it collided with the pickup truck. The cab driver, my stepfather and the driver of the pickup truck all died. They died instantly and no one could have done anything for them.

The police suddenly appeared at our apartment door and informed us of my stepfather's death. They came to us first because the cab was on its way here and my stepfather had our address on a piece of paper in his jacket pocket. The note had our address on it and underneath it said "my youngest stepson."

It was the first time I had received such a message, and of course I was appropriately shocked. Even though I did not know my stepfather, it was affecting me deeply. I then gave the police officers my mother's cell phone number. They called her and told her the sad news. She completely freaked out, she was screaming and crying and then suddenly there was silence on the phone.

Minutes passed but nothing was heard until my little brother called out loudly, "Mommy, Mommy wake up." One of the police officers reported this to dispatch and they notified 911 at my mother's home in the United States. Within 10 minutes, paramedics were at her house. However, they could only pronounce her dead. Apparently, due to the shock of her husband's death, she suffered a bad heart attack.

I was so shocked that I couldn't get a word out. Zhan called my brother and told him what happened. He had just taken our dad and stepmom to the airport with Cheng. He called his manager, who gave him time off. He and Cheng then immediately flew to the U.S. while Zhan and I took care of things with my stepdad here.

It all happened so quickly and so unexpectedly that we didn't have time to think at all. We just acted. Luckily, Zhan was by my side and took over most of it. I don't know what I would have done without him. After all, there were so many things to think about.

My brother contacted us as soon as he and Cheng landed in the US. They went to the coroner's office and, after consulting with us, signed off on not doing an autopsy on my mother. After all, we don't know if they might not have found something that is not normal for humans. After all, there is this elf thing!

After they went to the coroner's office and filled out several paperwork so that our mother's body could be transferred to Beijing and we could bury her here with her husband, they went to my mother's neighbor's house and picked up our little brother from there. He didn't understand all this and wanted to know when Mom was coming home.

Cheng then calmly explained to him that Mom was now with the angels. The three of them then cried for a whole hour. The next day they started to take care of everything on the spot. Or rather, they wanted to. But my stepfather had made provisions for everything. A will had everything in it. He also had death insurance policies for himself and our mother that covered all the funeral expenses.

There was only one thing left to settle. Namely, what should happen to our little brother. Actually, in the case of the death of the two, the sister of my stepfather should get custody of the little one. However, she had already died a year earlier and there were no other relatives. Therefore, my brother and Cheng applied for custody of our little brother. It was granted to them in a fast-track procedure, temporarily.

After two weeks, the three of them returned from the USA. My stepfather's lawyer would take care of the rest, including the sale of the house. Because the will said that it should be sold and the money should then be used for the care of our little brother.

They were back in Beijing in time for their funeral, which Zhan and I took care of during that time. We arranged it the way they described it in their will. Also, together with my dad and stepmom, who also came back, we set up a nursery in my brother and Cheng's apartment.

Our family held tightly together and the pack also helped us, especially to catch and build up our little brother. Because on one day he had lost his mother and father and couldn't cope with it at all. But thanks to the pack and especially thanks to the twins, he recovered and was able to laugh a little again just one week after the funeral.

But we were more worried about my big brother. Because he tried to hide his sadness. Only after a very long talk with him alone, I found out that he was afraid to show his grief because he thought it would burden me that he was grieving for our mother. Because even though I was shocked and it was my mother, I wasn't grieving. Not really.

After all, she and I never had an intimate relationship. And I was never as close to her as my big brother was. So during this conversation, I made it clear to him that he should grieve for her the way he wanted to and that it wouldn't bother me. Why should it? She was his mother as much as mine and he loved her very much in spite of everything.

Although at that moment, when I just learned of my stepfather's death and witnessed on the phone how my mother died, time seemed to stand still, it almost raced. Days turned into weeks and weeks into months and finally 6 months flew by until my brother and Cheng finally got full custody of our little brother from the court.

This was a huge change in their lives. They had to reorient themselves and organize themselves to get work and child under one hat. But they have managed it well so far. Cheng is usually at home taking care of the little one, while my brother is out filming and always tries to be home the same evening. It doesn't always work out, but it often does and so the three of them have become a real little family.

Youn and I had more contact again after my mother and stepfather died. We didn't see each other often, but we talked frequently on the phone. He and Wooseok will be moving to Korea next year to live with Wooseok's family. The two of them plan to travel and see the world at some point. Well, they have plenty of time.

Zhan and I continue to go about our work. He passed the exam and is now officially licensed as a private detective. We are equal partners at work and at home and it works out very well. In addition, we now have 6 employees. 5 full-time employees and one part-time employee. We were already afraid that we would have to look for a larger office. But thanks to the property manager, who had a break-through made to an empty two-room apartment, we now have more space.

When the remodeling work in our office was finally completed, we celebrated the new larger office together with our employees. We ourselves saw it as a kind of new beginning. Because from that day, Zhan was also officially in the records as my business partner.

In addition, two of our employees are always accompanied by a camera team. Therefore, two episodes of "Private Detectives in Action" are now shown on television once a week. This has made our private detective agency even better known. And we also officially cooperate with the police. When an order comes in, two other employees take care of it.

My dad and stepmom also moved here to Beijing a month ago. After we all got back in touch with each other, they wanted to be closer to the family. They live very close to us and we see them regularly. They visit the farm often and have established close contact with Grandpa Xiao and the rest of the pack.

Since they spend so much time at the farm, my dad's blood levels have gotten much better. He said he feels much fitter than before and my stepmother feels much healthier too.

When Zhan and I are not at work, making love or visiting family, we try to find out more about the past and the elves. Although we wanted to forget about it or push it far away, it kept us going and we finally started to do some research.

Of course, we have not found any scientific evidence for the existence of elves. But we did find out a few interesting things. Like the rumors about the cruel King Liam, whom my great-grandparents killed. About the fact that his youngest son defeated his 11 siblings in the fight for the throne, but died of an illness only 7-8 years later. Well, that would perhaps explain why no more soldiers were sent.

According to our information, the throne remained unoccupied because there were no successors. The young king is said to have been only 12 years old when he ascended the throne. And he had no wife and therefore no children when he died.

Another rumor said that the elven kingdom was so exploited and destroyed by all the wars that most of the elves left. Disease and hunger were also said to be a reason for leaving. Many of them are said to live among humans. And just like my ancestors, they also lost their powers at some point.

Of course, all these are just rumors that no one can confirm to us. But it is quite interesting. It would be nice if we could actually meet elves who could tell us firsthand what happened back then and how their kingdom really ended. And whether it ended at all.

In the end, though, I have to say, researching elves is more of a hobby for me. Because my life in the here and now is much more important to me. It is much nicer to spend an evening cuddling on the sofa in front of the TV with my beloved husband than to search for the past of the elves.

Although Zhan and I have been together for almost two years now, our love for each other seems to grow even more. We can't keep our hands off each other and take every opportunity to kiss, hold each other in our arms or sleep with each other. But we also talk a lot or go on normal dates, just like any other couple.

I always like to think back to the time when I first met and fell in love with Zhan. At that time I had only been a vampire for a year and had no idea about anything. I hated being a vampire and just tried to make the best of the situation. But that was sometimes easier said than done.

Through my experiences in my childhood and youth, but also through my work as a private detective, I had lost faith in love. Yet I was only 25 years old. But I was so deeply disappointed by the people I loved and the way they treated me that I just couldn't believe that real love existed anymore.

But then Zhan came into my life and after just one night with me, he said he was in love with me and wanted to be with me. I didn't believe a word he said. And when he showed up again two weeks later, I was even annoyed that he tried to convince me that love really exists. Still, I gave him a chance to convince me.

And what can I say? He did it and in the end I had to realize that I had probably fallen in love with Zhan even after that one night. I just didn't want to believe it and didn't want to allow these feelings for him out of fear. But as soon as I understood my feelings and told him for the first time that I love him, I couldn't go back and I couldn't stop confessing my feelings to him constantly and everywhere.

Zhan makes me incredibly happy. He makes me complete. He is my soul mate, my best friend, my lover, my boyfriend and my husband. I love him more than my life and I can't imagine a day without him. All I have to do is think about him and I feel this incredible tingling sensation throughout my body. When I look at him, my heart leaps with love. And when he touches me, hugs me or kisses me, time seems to stop and nothing else but him and me exists anymore.

I am grateful every day that I can have Zhan in my life. That I can be his angel, his shooting star, and his cute little vampire that he loves so incredibly. I will continue to strive to always be the man he fell madly in love with. Just as he will always strive to be the man I fell madly in love with.

No matter what awaits us in the future, we can do anything together. Our love is strong and indestructible! And whoever messes with us will regret it quickly. Because I now have a really big family!

Goodbye, Wang Yibo, happy husband, private detective and vampire!
