Chapter 38 - The truth about us

A/N: After a few days break, I finally feel motivated to write again today. Could be, unfortunately, that you find the chapter boring. If so, I'm sorry. The next one will be better.

In the days that Zhan and I spent with my father and stepmother, I got to know my father in a whole new way. I thought I knew him because, after all, he is my father. But those days with him showed me how wrong I was. Partly, of course, it is because people evolve in the course of their lives, they learn, they simply change.

Then I was also still a child at that time and saw my father or in particular, my parents with completely different eyes. For me, they were always the parents who were never at home, because they were always working to be able to offer my brother and me everything that one could wish for.

My stepmother also played her part in making my father change a lot and put his focus on other things than just work. He also told me himself that he regrets not being there more for my brother and me back then. Likewise, he regrets not calling much more often. Or never asked me to come visit for fear of rejection from me. Most of all, however, he regrets that he simply left me behind at that time.

I would say that we have been able to work through a lot during these days. Misunderstandings have been cleared up and I now know that my father really loves my brother and me and wants to see us. We have even planned to celebrate Christmas together in Hungary. My dad, my stepmom, my brother and Cheng, as well as Zhan and me. And I'm really looking forward to it.

To be honest, I wish my mom was like my dad too. I called her a few days ago and she was, not very happy about my call. She said I should have texted her ahead of time that I was going to call her so she could prepare. Why does she need to prepare for a phone call with her son?

In the end, the phone call didn't last 5 minutes because she had to pick up my half-brother from somewhere and didn't have time. Maybe that was just an excuse to end the phone call quickly. For me it was for sure afterwards, I just want to meet her now more and tell her my opinion about her.

But I also learned something else. Namely, how dependent we are on modern technology. I used to say that I wouldn't have a problem if my cell phone didn't work. Or that I didn't need the Internet. Or that I could get by without electricity for a while.

But then I experienced a storm like I never had before. It was the 10th day for us in Hungary. For three days we suffered from a really terrible tropical heat. Just sitting there and breathing was enough to make us sweat. Even for me as a vampire, it had been intense.

In the media and in the weather report, they were talking about powerful thunderstorms being expected, which could even develop into a hurricane. And indeed, there were in many places in Hungary partly very strong thunderstorms. But not where we were. In Budapest we still suffered from the tropical heat in late summer.

Well, and then came day 10. We sat in the garden in the evening and had a barbecue. A few slices of meat and some sausages we bought in the afternoon at the nearby supermarket. A couple of neighbors joined us with a few bottles of homemade liquor. And what was supposed to be a quiet evening turned into a real party.

There was singing, dancing and laughing. Unfortunately, Zhan and I didn't understand what was being talked about. The language barriers had simply been too big and we also did not always want to translate everything from my father and my stepmother.

At some point during the evening, when it was already dark and the party was in full swing, Zhan and I retreated to the front garden. We just sat on the grass and watched the night sky. We watched as clouds gathered and could see lightning flashing in the distance.

It didn't take long for the thunderstorm to approach. Many flashes of lightning twitched across the sky, while the rumble of thunder could be heard only very softly at the beginning, until it suddenly cracked really loudly. And at that moment it became really uncomfortable.

The wind picked up and it became really stormy. Several minutes it hail, before it began to rain heavily. Thunder and lightning alternated every three seconds it seemed. Some thunder was so powerful that we could feel the vibrations. We hastily retreated into the house and sat in the living room by the window, where we continued to watch the thunderstorm.

Then around midnight the thunderstorm had become a real storm. A powerful flash of lightning illuminated everything around us and somewhere in the distance a mighty loud bang sounded. Only two seconds later it went dark around us. Power failure!

My stepmother groped her way to the kitchen and retrieved a flashlight from a drawer, which she then used to look for candles, which she didn't have in the house. The flashlight's batteries lasted about 15 minutes, then they died and we were back in complete darkness.

Zhan and I then used our cell phones as flashlights until my dad and stepmom went to bed. After that, we relied on our eyes, which work well in the dark thanks to our special features. Nevertheless, we also went to bed while it continued to flash and to crack loudly.

It was already mid-morning when we woke up. We went downstairs where my stepmother was already sitting in the living room looking anything but happy. Because, the electricity was still not back!

Because of the lack of electricity, my stepmom couldn't make coffee for herself and my dad in the morning. The supermarket didn't open. The freezer thawed overnight and several kilograms of meat were in danger of spoiling. Therefore, my dad was also in the garden heating up the grill so they could grill all the meat before it spoiled.

In addition, when Zhan and I went to check our e-mails, we noticed that the cellular network was not working either. Neither phone nor internet were available. And that immediately annoyed us. Because we were expecting important emails and we couldn't check them.

When we went outside the door for a moment and noticed nothing but silence, we felt like we were in an apocalypse. Zhan then remembered that we had a radio in the car where we could listen to the news. We got my stepmother out and sat with her in our rental car, then turned on the radio.

The radio said that lightning had struck the power plant, or somewhere near there, and they were currently working at full speed to get everyone back on power soon. It was also pointed out that stores would remain closed until power was restored. The military would keep order and make sure there was no plundering.

We returned to the house where my stepmother was preparing the meat. I told my dad what had been said on the radio and he just shook his head. Apparently this wasn't the first time and my dad also explained to me that the last time it had taken almost a week for them to get power back. But that had been five years ago.

I immediately started to panic. Because Zhan and I had only 3 days left in Hungary until we go on to Germany. After all, we want to be on time in Blankenburg in the registry office to be able to marry there. Only a small and short ceremony, but it is completely enough for us. And besides, this was the only registry office, which had promptly a date free.

While my father was taking care of the meat and my stepmother was helping him, Zhan and I looked up in an old road atlas how to get from Hungary to Germany by car. And we did it in such a way that we would get there before my brother and Cheng, who would be our best men.

When Zhan arranged the date for us to get married, they said we needed two witnesses. We told my brother and Cheng about it and they both offered to be the best men for us. If we are their witnesses! Because the two of them also have a wedding appointment there on the same day, just 30 minutes later. They made that appointment right after I wrote my brother about when and where we were getting married.

Well, back to the blackout. My dad grilled all the meat and also the vegetables what was in the freezer and thawed. It took him until evening to do it and then he invited almost the entire neighborhood over for dinner. The dinner then turned into a neighborhood party. A few brought drinks, others salads and so really no one had to go hungry.

Late in the evening, the electricity was still gone, my dad, my stepmother, Zhan and I sat in the garden. Due to the storm, the tropical heat had dissipated and it had even become really fresh. A sign that autumn was coming, as my dad said.

It had already been 11 pm when my dad said we should slowly go inside. Some neighbors had given us candles and he wanted to sit with us in the candlelight in the living room. But before we went in, I said, quite suddenly and unplanned, "Dad, I'm a vampire and Zhan is a werewolf." I was startled myself when I said it just like that.

My dad looked at me, laughed and replied, "Oh sure son. And I'm a lion and your stepmom is a cat."

"Dad I'm serious! That's the truth."

"Then prove it! You said yourself that there are no such creatures. And now you say you're a vampire? And Zhan is a werewolf?"

"It's really true." I replied and explained to my dad how I became a vampire. Even though it was dark, I could see how pale he was. Still, of course, he didn't want to believe it. So I turned in front of him and my dad stared at me with wide eyes.

"Son. I may not know much about vampires. But they sure don't look like you. You look like an angel without wings! And not like a blood-sucking creature." He said.

When Zhan transformed in front of my father and stepmother, they stared at him with wide eyes. They were not afraid of him. My stepmother even touched Zhan and stroked his white fur. And finally my dad started to believe me.

I told him in detail what happened to Zhan and me in Finland and why I didn't look horrible. My dad was completely speechless. He just stared at me until he suddenly stood up, came to me, put his arms around me and said, "No matter if you're human or vampire, you're my son and I love you. And Zhan? You are part of our family even as a werewolf."

My stepmother nodded and said, "Yes, you are family. No matter what you are."

I didn't expect that. I thought my dad would be upset or wouldn't be able to accept me as a vampire. But I was wrong, thankfully, and my dad doesn't love me any less just because I'm not human anymore. Instead, he and my stepmother had many questions for us and our lives as vampires, respectively werewolves.

After the initial shock was digested, they had been really fascinated by us. My stepmother wondered about Zhan's soft white fur and also about my change, white hair and blue eyes. She said that when she saw Zhan's and my eyes, she knew that we belonged together. That our eyes are a sign of our togetherness.

In the end, we sat outside in the garden talking until 2 am. And then when we went inside, we sat in the living room by candlelight for another hour or so, talking about how Zhan and I envision our future life. At the moment, however, we don't really have any ideas yet. Because we haven't gotten around to making plans yet.

We only know what we will do next. Get married, fly to the U.S. and confront my mother. Spend a few days with my brother and Cheng in the US. Fly home and finally see Yizhan again. Visiting Grandpa Xiao and asking him what he knows about our legend. Then plan to move to the apartment next to the office, sell my previous apartment and resume our jobs.

So in that sense, we have some plans. But no real future plans yet. That will come in time. After all, we have time.

When we went to bed shortly after 3 am, we immediately fell asleep after this long day. And when we woke up, the little light on the TV was on. The power was back! And when we came downstairs, my dad and stepmom were sitting in the living room with a big pot of coffee, watching the news on TV.

Zhan and I immediately charged the batteries from our cell phones, read our emails and called our near and dear ones. This one day without electricity was intense. Because it made us realize how much we depend on modern technology. Today, many things don't work without modern technology. And I also realized that I can't do without it either. I was more than happy when I could finally surf the Internet and make phone calls again.

Today, Zhan and I want to go to bed early. Because tomorrow morning we will be leaving. We are finally going to Germany, where we will get married at the Blankenburg registry office!

A/N 2: For your information. I let you vote because of the MPREG special. Almost all of you voted for it, so this book will get an MPREG special, like in the book "I am not cute". This book will end normally for those who don't like MPREG and then continue for the MPREG fans. Everyone should be happy with that.
