Chapter 36 - My father
A/N: I read that the question came whether Oleg and Mira had children of their own. The answer is no. And before Mira and Oleg, there was no white wolf mating with a vampire.
After a total of seven days in Mira and Oleg's house, we decided to leave Finland and travel on to Hungary. With a full suitcase of pictures of the two, we set off in the morning. We drove to the nearest city with an airport and then we were off to Hungary.
Since we were in Helsinki, the flight only took 2 hours and 20 minutes to land in Budapest. Since my dad doesn't live far from the airport, we just quickly moved our stuff to the hotel room we booked beforehand, took a rental car from the hotel and drove to my dad's house.
I was mega nervous and excited. I had not seen my father for years. We only ever talked on the phone and it always seemed to me that he didn't want me to come visit him. But now we were on our way to see him and I was excited to see how he would react when we were suddenly standing in front of his door.
After only 12 minutes our drive was over and we were standing in front of a small old house that looked kind of cute. Which was probably because there were lots of colorful artificial butterflies hanging on the wall of the house. In the small front garden with the freshly mowed lawn, were many beautiful flowers and led along the narrow path, to the house. At the house itself, the ivy climbed up and gave only a little view of the blue house facade and the artificial butterflies.
The wine-red front door was decorated with a wreath of flowers, made entirely of sunflowers. I glanced nervously at Zhan, who immediately took my hand and said, "I'm with you. Nothing can happen." I nodded and we walked to the front door.
I pressed the doorbell button and a ding dong sounded. Shortly after, we heard footsteps in the house and my father calling out that he was going to the door. I was so nervous that Zhan's hand was no longer enough for me and I clung to his whole right arm.
Then when the front door opened and I saw my, now already graying, father, tears immediately came to my eyes. My father looked at me with wide eyes, put both hands in front of his mouth and said, sobbing, "My beautiful boy." And the next moment we hugged each other, crying bitterly.
My stepmother, a Chinese woman also came to the door and I heard her say, "Finally your son comes to visit you. I am happy for you. But first, come inside."
My father pulled Zhan and me with him into the house and into his living room. He looked at me and kept stroking my cheeks. "You've grown up and are even more beautiful than you were then. I have a really gorgeous son." I had expected anything, but not this.
"Yes he is really beautiful." Confirmed my stepmother.
Only after a few minutes of wondering, shedding tears and touching me, my father looked at Zhan and extended his hand. "Sorry for being rude. I'm Yibo's father." He said.
Zhan smiled and replied, "I know. I am Xiao Zhan. It's a pleasure to meet you."
"ZhanZhan is my fiancé." I blurted out proudly.
After all, my father knows I'm gay, so I had no problem telling him openly. And my father's reaction was to hug Zhan and welcome him into the family.
While my stepmother made tea for all of us and prepared some pastries, Zhan and I sat in the living room with my father. We talked about my trip to Romania, which he knew about because we had talked on the phone in the meantime. Then we told him about Finland and that we came here before flying to Germany to get married.
Of course, I left out the real reason for our trip. After all, my father does not know that I am a vampire. I told him instead that I had accompanied Zhan in his research as a historian. He did not ask further about it. But he was still very interested in one thing: "Have you met Count Dracula?"
I laughed and shook my head. "No daddy. Vampires don't even exist."
"Are you sure about that? Because I think there are things in this world that we have no idea about."
"Yeah, maybe." I said.
My stepmother came back into the living room with the tea and pastries and sat down next to my dad. She took a cookie and asked me, "Why did you take so long to come and visit us? And why hadn't you been to our wedding then?"
"Um, it always seemed like a visit from me wasn't wanted. And you didn't invite me to your wedding." I replied.
"Yes we did! We sent you an invitation. We just couldn't send your big brother an invitation because we didn't have his address and he was mad because your dad was getting married again. And we would have loved for you to come visit us every once in a while." She explained.
"I never got an invitation. And because Daddy never said anything about me coming to visit you guys sometime, I never asked."
"You're always welcome to come. I've been dying to meet you, too. I don't have kids of my own, and I thought we could be friends. But we got the impression you didn't want to."
"That's right. You're always welcome here. And Zhan, of course, too. Yibo, you're my wonderful son. Why wouldn't I want to see you? I just got the impression at some point that you didn't want to come here, so I never asked if you might want to come visit." Explained my father.
That's when I realized that it was all a misunderstanding at the time. The invitation to the wedding was apparently lost and because they received no response, they thought I was against their marriage and that I didn't want to meet my stepmother. All these years I thought my dad didn't want me anymore.
But now I know I was wrong. My dad missed me as much as I missed him. Sure, we never had that intimate father-son relationship because he was always just working. But still, he and I were kind of close. Closer than my mom and me.
When we told my dad we were staying in a hotel, he immediately scolded us and said we should get our stuff and spend the time we were in Hungary staying with him and my stepmom. So we could have as much time together as possible. I asked Zhan if it was okay with him and since he agreed, we decided to get our stuff from the hotel room in the evening and spend the days here with my dad.
During our conversations, I also learned that my dad would have liked to come to Beijing himself to visit me after I graduated from the university. But my father suddenly became very ill. He had cancer and could not travel. And because he didn't want me to worry, he didn't tell me at that time.
He fought the cancer for a year and a half and finally beat it. But since then, he is physically unstable and cannot make a long trip like Beijing. I wish I had known all this earlier. Then it wouldn't have taken so many years for us to meet again. And if it weren't for Zhan, I would still think my dad doesn't want to see me now.
We also talked about my mom. I explained that shortly after she went to America, she remarried and became a mom again. But that I don't know my stepfather, or my half-brother. "She calls me maybe once or twice a year, tells me everyone is fine, and doesn't even ask how I or A-Kuan are doing." I narrated.
Then I told him about my brother moving back to Beijing and what his fans have done for him to clear his name and even let him work as an actor again. And we also told him about Cheng. My father listened enthusiastically. And even my stepmother, who seems to be a really wonderful woman, listened with excitement and asked me many questions.
For dinner, they ordered pizza for all of us. After dinner, Zhan and I quickly went to the hotel to get our things. While driving to the hotel, I talked to my brother on the phone and told him all about our father and stepmother. And he asked me to send his regards to both of them and tell them that he would visit them with Cheng soon.
When I told my father upon our return, he immediately had tears in his eyes again. He seems to have really missed us. I think there will be many tears when my brother visits him together with Cheng.
We watched the video of the wedding together. It was just a very simple and small wedding. And in it, you can see my father looking around sadly. Because no one from his family was present. The rows of seats for the husband's family and relatives were completely empty.
And I saw that the memory of that day, made my father sad again. It must have been really hard. I hugged him silently and he pressed me tightly against him. He kissed my forehead and whispered, "I am so happy that you are here. I can't even describe how happy I am."
"I'm happy too daddy. I really missed you." I replied.
I cuddled with my dad for the rest of the evening and felt closer to him than I had ever felt before in my life. But at that moment I realized again that he did everything he did back then, all the work, the presents and the money, just to show me his love. He didn't know that it would have been enough for me if he had just been there more often.
I really became aware that he was always thinking about me. He continued to pay me money monthly after he left. He paid for my studies. Called me at regular intervals. He always wanted to know how I was doing and if I needed anything. And without this misunderstanding and the invitation to the wedding that never reached me, we would have seen each other more often in the past years.
So when Zhan and I went to the small guest room and lay down in bed, I snuggled my head on his chest and said, "You know ZhanZhan, without you I wouldn't be here today. I thank you for that."
"You're very welcome my cute precious. I kind of suspected that your father would care about you at all. And I'm glad you were able to clear up the misunderstanding." Replied Zhan calmly.
"Mn. I hope I'll be able to see him more often now."
"Sure. But then you'll have to tell him about your secret eventually. Because he'll notice that you're not getting any older."
"True. But I don't have to tell him right away, do I?"
"No, of course you don't. Get to know each other again first, and then when you're ready, you can tell him."
"You ZhanZhan?"
"Mhm?"
"Could we maybe stay here for a week or two?"
"Sure. If that's what you want, then that's what we'll do."
"I would like that. I want to spend more time with my dad and get to know my stepmom better. She seems really nice."
"Then we'll stay. And yes, she really is very nice. And I think she's already taken you to her heart."
"You think so?"
"Yeah, I'm pretty sure she has."
"I like her too."
"Hey Yibo?"
"Yeah?"
"I love you."
"Awww, I love you too ZhanZhan."
"Forever and ever."
"Yes, forever and ever."
"And one more thing Yibo."
"Yeah? What's that?"
"I'm proud of you. You were brave today and jumped over your own shadow."
"Thank you ZhanZhan. I couldn't have done it without you."
"Who knows, maybe you would have made it eventually."
"I sure wouldn't. I need you ZhanZhan. No matter what it's about. I need you."
"And I'm always here for you, no matter what it's about." Replied Zhan.
We kissed each other before I lay back on top of him and snuggled up to him. I would have wanted more, but the walls in this house are thin and I don't want my dad to hear us making love. Because we forget everything around us too quickly once we start. And then we are always not quiet either. So that night we preferred to leave it alone. But I can't stand it for long, so completely without the sex.
