Leo Outruns Steve
After a night of pizza, laughs, and nightmares, I woke up at 2:00
AM. After the Giant War, all demigods involved became early birds as well as light sleepers. It was natural now to wake up fully alert and ready to fight. I walked into the kitchen and saw no one was awake, I shrugged and got some non - sugary cereal. (I really did NOT want another sugar high)
About 5:00 AM, Steve came lumbering into the kitchen. He grabbed some coffee.
"Hiya, Steve!" I said cheerily and he whipped around, then relaxed when he saw it was me.
"Hey Leo, what are you doing awake?" He asked.
"How about you tell me why you're awake then I'll tell you why I'm awake?" I said with a smirk.
"Oh um... I was in the army, we had to be -" I cut him off mid sentence.
"Wide awake at early times for battle, for taking watch, and be a light sleeper for sneak attacks?" He looked shocked, "I was in a war. It was pretty much the fate of the world on me, and a few others they were all about my age. It was pretty intense. We also had to fight in secret. It could never be known. We wound up fighting in the mountains, and blaming the damage on freak weather. A few of the others put the whole city Manhattan to sleep, while they fought another battle, with a couple hundred other teens with freaky powers, that were naturally gifted with the ability to battle, and had been trained in ancient weaponry. I fall in all of those categories except for the ancient weaponry; I use my hammer, creativity, and fire in a fight."
Steve paused, trying to process this crazy information, then opened his mouth to speak, "I'm not even going to ask, but would you like to come on a run?"
"Sure!"
And we were off!
--------Hi! I'm Bobette The Line! Bob The Line's wife!--------
We got into the tower, I wasn't breaking a sweat, but Steve was sweating hard. I saw all his teammates come running.
"We had a good run!" I said in a chipper voice.
"Yeah! Until he decided to go for an extra 56 miles and back!" Steve shouted. The others looked shocked as Steve passed out.
"What?" I asked.
"You out ran a super soldier?!" Tony shouted. I shrugged.
"I could go longer." I said, "But as you can see, my friend here looked ready to drop. Look what I built on the way!" I showed them my mini artificially intelligent dragon I built while I was running, "I'll call you mini Festus!" I smiled as the dragon talked in Morse code to tell me he liked his new name.
"What the heck is that?!" Tony shouted.
"A miniature artificially intelligent dragon!" I said happily. They all looked at me shocked.
"You built an artificially intelligent being in less than a day?!" Tony said, shocked.
"Yeah! It's fun building stuff like that! I told you earlier about the original, Festus he's the best!" My expression darkened, "or he was. Before the other campers busted him."
"What's wrong about that? Can't you just build another one?" Natasha asked.
"NO! I CAN'T!" I yelled before breaking down sobbing, "When you build something with artificial intelligence, with emotions, once it breaks it's the equality to someone dying. Festus was my best friend, I fixed him, saved him from destruction, and he saved me, destroying himself in the process. I revived him by building a flying ship and making his head into the mast. Then I made him back into a dragon after I made a new body, only for him to be destroyed again. Tony, you thought Jarvis was a good friend, now imagine him with emotions, and a friendly face, and imagine him giving everything to save you, and your friends time and time again. What would you do if he was destroyed? Natasha, imagine if Clint died by the hands of a prank from Tony and Steve. That's what Festus was to me. We risked everything together, including our lives, and the fate of the world. Now he's gone, and this time I can't fix him. To make it worse, I found out he'd actually developed a soul! He actually had a soul that went to the underworld. I failed him, and I can't fix it. Just like I can't fix myself." Everyone was taken back by my sudden outburst. Then Natasha put her hand on my shoulder, showing emotion for the first time since I saw her.
"I'm sorry." She said sincerely, "I didn't know he meant that much to you." She hugged me and I froze, not even my old friends hugged me often. Then I hugged back and sobbed on her shoulder. The other Avengers joined in a hug, Steve had woken up in my outburst. It was a special moment. Afterwards we sat on the couch for the rest of the day, talking about those whom we lost.
