I was an island
Before you came along
Put your boat in my sand
Your hand in my hand
Your heart in my songs

Virgil sat curled on top of his bed. His room was dark, and he just stayed there feeling miserable. More miserable than he had ever felt before. So miserable he didn't even think he could cry anymore.

Why you might ask? Well the answer is quite plain and simple...

Roman.

Virgil felt a bittersweet smile tug at his lips at the name as a memory popped into his mind.

/flashback/

"Princey I still don't understand something here." Virgil stated as he sat across from said man on a picnic blanket. "Why'd you ask me to come out here?"

"Why?" Roman asked raising a brow. "Okay wow I didn't think I'd have to explain myself..." he cleared his throat. "I guess I just thought it was about time to ask you out on a date."

Virgil widened his eyes slightly feeling a slight warmth in his cheeks. "D-Date?"

"Well yeah..." Prince felt himself blushing to now. "I was under the impression you already knew that. I mean I flirt with you all the time."

"You do?" Virgil asked almost choking on air.

Roman looked at him like he was crazy. "Of course. Jesus, I've had a crush on you for like ever."

Virgil didn't know how to respond for a few seconds. He then suddenly frowned looking away. "Why..?"

Roman looked over to him in surprise. "Why what?"

"Why do you have a crush on me?" Virgil asked still not meeting the others eyes. "I'm just the weird angsty loner..."

"Why..." Roman stared at the other before moving the picnic basket from between them, and scooting closer. He took Virgil's hand and leaned against him lightly. He smiled contently. "Because you're you..."

/end flashback/

Virgil buried his face in his knees as the once happy memory took on a sour taste.

I was a fighter
And I was so brave
But I lowered my sword
When you held me and swore
You'd stay, stay, stay oh

Prince too sat in his room, flipping through some photos he had. He froze when a picture of him and Virgil fluttered out from the pages. He took the laminated memory in his hands and stared at it remembering when he'd taken it.

/flashback/

"Come On Virg humor me here!" Roman laughed as he slung his arm around his partner, and tried to get them both into the shot of his selfi-cam. "Just crack a smile this once."

"Why are you taking a picture of us anyway?" Virgil asked stubbornly looking away to hide his face.

"Because Hot Topic~" Prince Let the teasing nickname roll off his tongue affectionately. "I would like to have a picture of me and my boyfriend."

Virgil's face visibly turned red. "B-boyfriend?"

"Yes." Roman replied. "We are going out right?"

"Yeah I guess..." Virgil muttered. "That still doesn't explain why you need a picture with me."

"Fine, if you want the truth I'll tell you." Roman sighed. "It's proof. That you're taken." He replied simply. "That way I won't have to slay anyone who tries to come onto you."

"What?" Vigil asked in surprise. "That's ridiculous."

"Not to me." Roman said and Virgil could tell he was being one hundred percent serious. "I don't want anyone else to have you."

Virgil looked away again fighting the urge to smile. "Don't go around slaying anyone." He replied leaning into him more, and grabbing Prince's freehand. "I'm not gonna stay with anyone but you..."

Roman smiled before leaning down and kissing Virgil's cheek.

Virgil blushed, but couldn't help but let a small smile grace his lips, and that's when Roman snapped the picture.

/end flashback/

At the memory of Virgil's words that day Roman felt his heart physically ache and held the picture close to his chest, like it was the only thing he still had left.

I can't do this alone anymore
Cause I'm no good on my own anymore
What did I do to deserve this?
What did you do to me?
Baby, come back
You know I don't want to be free

Virgil honestly couldn't remember the last time he left his room for longer than two seconds to grab a small amount of food. He honestly didn't have an appetite. It took all he had to get up and shower at least every other day. He just laid on his bed in his dark room thinking of all the good times he had with Roman. The memories would play over and over in his head, almost like they were taunting him.

"You messed up" they'd say.

"It's your fault."

"You lost him."

"He's gone."

"Forever..."

He didn't cry, he had no tears left. He remembered the bad times too. The yelling and screaming, slamming of doors, tears, sweet apologies, till the one time it became too much and they... Well it didn't work out like all the others.

Virgil pulled his covers tightly around him trying to make them hold him as some sorry excuse for comfort.

He wanted Roman to come back...

I was a rebel, but I had a cause
'Til you came to town
Pushed me around
And showed me what love was

Roman couldn't help but open his mind up to another flashback as he still held the picture.

/flashback/

"I am trying Virgil I'm trying so hard to come up with creative ideas for Thomas, but I just can't!" Roman expressed worriedly raking his fingers through his hair. "What If... what if I'm just not good enough, what if I let Thomas down?"

"You're making too big a deal out of a little slump Roman." Virgil told him. "And if I have to tell you that, you know it's true."

"Yeah maybe I'm being irrational, but what if I'm not?" Roman hung his head in his hands slowly shaking it back and forth. "I can't disappoint him... or you... or anyone."

"You don't..." Virgil trailed off rubbing his back comfortingly.

Roman looked up and met his boyfriends eyes.

Virgil placed a hand on Roman's cheek softly rubbing his thumb against it. "You could never disappoint me. Or Thomas."

Roman smiled taking his hand softly. "Even you don't know the future Virgil..."

"Alright that's it." Virgil pulled his hand away standing abruptly, and slamming his foot into the carpet slightly. "You are not and will never be disappointing." He said sternly. "You are the most creative person I know, and nothing can change that. That's that and you can't convince me, or Thomas, or anyone else otherwise. Got it?"

Roman blinked up at him in surprise before a more genuine smile stretched at his lips. He stood too walking over to Virgil taking his waist and pulling him close against his body. "Alright you've convinced me."

"Convinced you Of what?" Virgil asked.

Roman used his free hand to brush the boy's hair out of his face. "That I've completely fallen for you..." he whispered before leaning down and capturing Virgil's lips in his own.

Their first real kiss...

It was so hard to explain how much it meant to the both of them, or how it felt.

It was exhilarating. Like sparks were flying from the contact. Hearts beating, hands sliding around eachother, and so much emotion it was almost unbearable.

When prince pulled away he smiled as Virgil looked up at him breathlessly, a small amount of air passing through his lips shakily. He had to take a few seconds to compose himself. "I've fallen for you too Princey."

/end flashback/

Roman dropped the picture and pulled his knees to his chest. His body shook as he tried to hold back tears. "I did end up letting you down didn't I..?"

I was a wolf, dear
Apart from the pack
But you answered my cry
In the dead of the night
And told me that you had my back, oh

Virgil tried to fall asleep, but he couldn't. Despite his blankets he felt cold. Cold and alone.

/flashback/

Virgil sat in his bed late one night rocking back and forth and trying to block out the world. He had a lot of attacks at night. Night brought time to think, and dream... despite his efforts he couldn't control his breathing as he started to tremble. He silently wished Roman would come faster. He didn't know why he'd texted him... a moment of weakness he guessed...

"Virgil?" Roman didn't even bother knocking as he walked into his room. When he got no reaction he frowned closing the door behind him before walking over to the anxious figure. "Hey shh it's okay..." he whispered sitting next to him on the bed and wrapping an arm around him. "What's wrong?"

"The u-usual..." Virgil managed, only calming a small amount at his touch. "Y-you know-" he sucked in a breath. "Wondering if I r-ruin Thomas l-life." He then burst into tears.

"Virg..." Roman trailed off pulling him into his lap and holding him close. "You know that isn't true. Thomas needs you. I need you..."

Virgil returned the embrace burying his face into his chest trying to find his comfort in Roman's warmth, his sent, his voice, just him. He started calming down. "I don't want to be alone..." he whispered.

"You aren't alone..." Roman assured him.

"S-stay here... for the night?" Vigil asked although it didn't really sound much like a question. More like a hopeful command.

"Of course." Roman smiled. He then laid down, taking Virgil with him and covered them both with the blankets. "Get some sleep." He said softly kissing his temple. "I'll be right here in the morning."

/end flashback/

Virgil closed his eyes trying to sleep, but he couldn't.

Roman wouldn't be there this time...

I can't do this alone anymore
Cause I'm no good on my own anymore
What did I do to deserve this?
What did you do to me?
Baby, come back
You know I don't want to be free

Roman had failed in his venture to not cry. He sat there his knees still pulled to his chest as tears seemed to endlessly flow from his eyes. It had been two weeks since they broke up, and Roman hated himself for still being this much of a mess, but how couldn't he be? He cared about Virgil so much. He loved him so much. Who wouldn't be a wreck after that's taken from you? They had been dating for nearly a year, and for things to just... end. He couldn't take it.

"I'm sorry Virgil..." he choked out taking a sharp breath. "I'm so sorry..."

I can't do this alone anymore
Cause I'm no good on my own anymore
What did I do to deserve this?
What did you do to me?
Baby, come back
You know I don't want to be free oh
Baby, come back
You know I don't want to be free
No, No, No
Baby come back
You know I don't want to be free

Virgil laid in his bed thinking maybe he'd finally pass out from shear exhaustion when his eyes flicked open at the sound of a knock at his bedroom door. He almost convinced himself he was imagining things when the knock came again, softer this time.

He sat up trying to make his voice sound normal. "Come in." He widened his eyes in shock when Roman walked in.

"Virgil... I'm sorry to come so late... but..." The prince closed the door behind him.

"It's fine..." Virgil replied quietly.

"I just..." Roman walked over and sat at the end of the bed slowly looking up to Virgil allowing the other male to finally see how red and puffy his eyes were. "I miss you..."

Virgil blinked back at him not knowing how to respond.

"I know we had that bad argument  and broke things off, and I'm so sorry for what I said but..." Prince's voice had started shaking halfway through the sentence and he had to pause and swallow a lump in his throat before continuing. "Virgil I've been a wreck without you... I can't stand it, and I know I disappointed you, and you probably hate me bu-"

Virgil cut him off by gently grabbing him around the neck and suddenly kissing him.

Roman was obviously shocked at first but melted into the kiss. He wrapped his arms around the other pulling him as close as possible, and felt both his emotions and Virgil's all in that one kiss. Even if just in that one moment, the misery faded away into what they used to have. What was happy and beautiful, and real...

Eventually Virgil pulled away. They were both left panting slightly and he caught his breath for a second before meeting Roman's eyes. "I miss you too, and I'm sorry for what I said, I'm just as much to blame..." he then gave a small sarcastic laugh. "And seriously are you stupid? I thought I told you before, you could never disappoint me..."

Roman smiled rubbing his hand gently up and down Virgil's arm. "I know... guess I don't retain certain things very well huh?" He then let out a sigh before there was a small comfortable silence. "So... how about it then? Will you... be my boyfriend again?"

"Of course I will Princey. I did promise to stay with only you right?" Virgil replied.

Roman chuckled. "You did indeed."

There was another short silence as they just sat there in each others arms for a bit.

Virgil broke it quietly. "Stay here... for the night?"

"Of course." Prince laid down Virgil joining him and pulling the covers around both of them. Roman then leaned over and kissed his temple. "And I'll be right here in the morning..." he paused as Virgil nuzzled into him more. He almost thought he'd fallen asleep, but even if he did, Roman knew he had to say something. One more thing. "I love you Virgil..."

Virgil didn't respond and just continued to breathe lightly.

Roman almost convinced himself he'd fallen asleep, and closed his eyes as well before a small voice broke through the silence.

"I love you too Roman."
