Roman hummed a tune as he ran his fingers through Virgil's hair, the raking motion relaxing the other. About an hour before, the princely one had found him passed out on the floor, exhausted by a panic attack, that had started out as an anxiety attack earlier in the afternoon.
He leaned down, slowly, as not to startle the other.
~~~
"Oh my God, just go kill yourself already!"
Virgil tried to hold back tears as he shouted back, "Oh, how creative of an insult, Roman! You know, you really are a fucking genius!"
The other laughed coldly, his voice drenched in bitterness. "Oh come on, stop trying to counterattack me, you're just a pathetic piece of shit and you know it!"
"Yes, Roman. I know it. You see, I know things, unlike a certain dumbass in this room." The anxious one spat back.
~~~
Their relationship, of recent, had been a bit awkward. They both kind of knew they had feelings for each other, but hadn't had a conversation about it yet, so they were both stuck in this weird we're-kinda-friends-but-I-also-lowkey-love-you kind of deal, and neither knew how to start talking about to the other about those aforementioned feelings, so buried deep down was where they were most likely to stay.
"What was it that started the attack? If you want to say of course, otherwise take all the time you need to relax some more..."
~~~
At the word 'Dumbass', Roman clenched his fist so tight it went as pale as it would go. "What is it Princey, does the truth hurt you? Tell me, how does it feel to have the brain of a Kindergartener? Huh?!"
Roman merely mumbled something under his breath, trying his best to keep calm.
"I can't hear you~ Speak up, you prick!"
The taller one's voice came out as a monotone whispers that made Virgil's heart feel like it was being pierced by freezing shards of ice.
"Don't make me punch that pretty face of yours, you depressing little fuck."
~~~
Virgil's voice came out a rough whisper as he tried to form a sentence. "I- It- Uhm, so-" he took a deep breath. "-Do you want the truth?"
The taller one's hand carried on delicately massaging his head as he answered. "Of course, Virgil. I must know exactly what beast it is that is making your life miserable, so I can vanquish it for you!"
At that, the smaller man gave a chuckle, or well, he tried to. His throat still felt a bit tight because of the crying. "You don't have to vanquish anything for me, Roman..."
As he looked up, his eyes were met by a sincere grin. "But I want to! It's the least I can do for- Uh, you..." he used his free hand to scratch his neck awkwardly.
"So, what is it?"
~~~
Virgil ran to his room, and as soon as he entered it, he slammed the door closed and collapsed. Tears streaming down his face, he did the best he could to hurl himself onto his bed, every movement making his body ache and his throat tighten up.
As soon as he'd climbed up on his mattress, he curled himself up in a ball and finally let himself sob and sob until he ran out of tears.
Roman, on the other side of the wall, wasn't feeling much better. As he got into his room, he let out his pent up fury out by punching the mirror, hating his reflection in it, and wanting it to go away. He tore his hand away, and glanced down at it.
His knuckles were bleeding, badly. Minuscule shards of glass planted all over them, but he didn't care. At this point, he didn't care about anything. He just wanted to lay in bed, letting himself slowly decompose until he was gone forever. Then, maybe, he'd finally stop making other people's lives miserable.
~~~
Virgil sighed once more, and suddenly lifted his head up, making the other's hand flinch away from his purple bangs.
"Roman, do you still hate me?"
The taller one's eyes went from concerned, to confused, to shocked, to incredulous. "Virgil, why is that even a question? Did I say or do something wrong? Is that what caused your attack?"
The anxious one was finding it progressively harder to put his thoughts into words. "No! Well, ok, maybe? Kind of- Uh..."
Roman gently took the other's hand and interlocked their fingers, looking carefully in Virgil's eyes so that he could stop at any given sign of discomfort. Virgil gave none, he just let the princely one caress his hand. It felt nice, warm.
"Why don't you just tell me...What you last remember thinking about before you passed out?"
~~~
He felt the anxiety starting to creep up his spine. It was getting harder to breathe. Were the walls closing in on him? He felt himself drowning. He saw himself, dropped into an endless abyss of black, no escape visible whatsoever.
Meanwhile, the other was standing in the middle of his room as all the hateful words he'd said to Virgil just minutes before came back to him, each one creating a wound in his heart and striking a match at his confidence. It shouldn't be like this. He shouldn't speak to others words he doesn't mean, he shouldn't feed lies to himself. He felt heartbroken.
But he couldn't. He couldn't feel heartbroken, or sad, or mad, or upset, or annoyed, or anything! He couldn't...
It wasn't fair on Virgil.
Virgil...
~~~
As the shorter one finished telling the other of the thought process that gave him the attack, he felt a huge weight fall off his shoulders.
Then that weight was re-positioned where it was before, thrice as heavy, as soon as he lifted his eyes to see Roman's face. His lips were slightly trembling, and his eyes were screwed shut as he held up his head with his hand.
"I- Virgil, y-" ,he tried to steady his breathing. Eventually, it worked.
"Does this mean that you haven't forgiven me? T-that we can't be...friends?"
The shorter one's eyes widened in shock, a wave of guilt forcefully ramming into him. "No, no! Of course I've forgiven you! Also, I could have acted better myself, but it's in the past now, Roman...I actually really lo-like being your friend..."
~~~
Virgil didn't come out of his room for a week, eating only a couple times, only to get Patton to leave him alone. He was a mess.
Roman, on the other hand, was quick recover his princely appearance, but the pain was always there in his eyes. Guilt was engraved in his soul, and he appeared more cold and arrogant than before.
It took both of them a month to accept being in the same room, and even then, they wouldn't even acknowledge each other's presence, let alone conversate like they used to.
Every time Roman felt like he might talk to Virgil..."Oh my God, just go kill yourself already!"
And every time Virgil considered approaching Roman...Tell me, how does it feel to have the brain of a Kindergartener?
They couldn't.
~~~
"Thanks Virge, I-" ,he hurriedly wiped away a tear that was beginning to form in the corner of his eye, "I'm still really sorry, though."
The anxious one timidly reached out a hand, cupping the side of Roman's face. He softly rubbed his finger against the other's cheek. "It's all alright, My Prince...Uhm, you wanna start with 'Frozen' today?"
The taller one's eyes lit up at the mention of the instant classic as he energetically nodded and hugged the other, whispering a quick 'Thank you' in his ear. They both pulled away a smile on their faces. Virgil was just about to go set up the movie, when Roman gave him a kiss on the cheek.
~~~
It felt devastating, like it was the end of everything.
~~~
That was the beginning of something truly beautiful.
❤️💜
