Chapter 8

But I can see the stars,
From America,
I wonder if you can see them too?
- Ed Sheeran (All the Stars)

So let me get dis straight, yous don't wantsta be queen?"

"I would rather be put to death than be a queen."

"Harsh, glad we escaped den."

The waitress came over and sat down their coffees at their booth they sat at.

"You know you look familiar." She mumbled turning to Katherine.

Katherine's eyes widened and she stared at Jack who stared back, eyes just as wide.

"Oh I- I um-"

"No, no silly me." The waitress said tucking a stray strand of blonde hair behind her ear, "Enjoy your coffee dears."

And with that the waitress walked away and left Jack and Katherine there to sigh with relief.  Katherine began to drink her coffee and looked up to Jack's laughter.

"What is it?" She asked setting down her mug.

"Da former princess likes her coffee strong eh?"

Katherine smirked, "And her boys." She whispered.

"What was dat?"

"Nothing!" She said putting her chin in her hands.

"So what are we doing tomorrow?" Katherine suddenly asked.

"Well we're goin' wherever da wind takes us."

"Wherever the wind takes us?" Katherine asked skeptically, "What have you been reading?"

"It sounded poetic."

"Well I liked it." Katherine smiled before leaning over and booping his nose.

"What da bloody heck was that?" Jack asked.

"I have no idea." Grinned Katherine.

The two left the coffee shop hand in hand into the chilly night air.

"Look at the stars!" Katherine exclaimed letting go of his hand and running forward, spinning around like a small child with the biggest smile on her face.

Jack couldn't help but smile too.

"Haven't ya ever seen da stars out at night?" He asked.

"Only from my window.  Palace rules were I wasn't allowed out late.  They're so beautiful." Katherine sighed.

Jack came forward and took her hand again before kissing her head softly, "Just like my Ace."

"Who's your Ace?" Katherine asked looking up at him.

"Yous are silly." He replied, "Ace 'n Jack, da dynamic duo."

Katherine smiled shivering slightly in the wind that blew her hair around.

"Yous want my jacket?" Jack asked.

"No." Katherine replied quickly.

He needed it far more than she.  The poor boy was literally willing to give the clothes off his back for her.

The two continued walking until they reached a bench and sat down side by side.  Katherine leaned her head against Jack's shoulder and sighed.  The two stayed in silent for a while just watching the quiet city and river close by.

"You're sure it won't be a bother that I stay with you and the boys. . . And girl?" Katherine quickly asked.

"Course not." Jack mumbled taking her hand and intwining their fingers together.

"I've wanted to kiss you since I fell out of the tree this morning ya know." Katherine whispered.

"Yeah, we sure don' wait fo' nothin." Jack chuckled.

"I love you so much Jack.  Thank you."

"I love you more Ace"

And the two sat like that overlooking the rest of Norktown.

It wasn't until Jack heard soft snoring that he looked down and let out a small laugh.  Katherine had fallen asleep on his shoulder.

"Aye Ace." He mumbled shaking her lightly.

"Mm, what is it?" She said groggily.

"Let's go home." He helped her to her feet and put his jacket around her shoulders, her being too tired to protest this time before putting an arm around her and walking through the streets carefully back to the lodging house.

***

Once at the house Jack quietly opened unlocked and opened the door and led a sleepy (and stumbling) Katherine inside and turned around and locked it.  Katherine turned around and hugged him tightly already half asleep once more, practically drunk off sleep and completely crashed from the coffee high from earlier.  There was only one easy way to do this.

"C'mon Katherine." Jack said softly as he put a hand under her knees and kept the other on her back, scooping her up to carry her upstairs.

Katherine smiled in her sleep nuzzling her face into his neck and he could hear her light snoring once again and just laughed to himself.  No more coffee highs for former princesses.

Once upstairs he gently laid her down on his bunk and unwrapped the jacket from her.  She'd get changed in the morning.  Jack quickly changed into pajamas and crawled in next to Katherine, pulling her close and kissing the back of her head.

So princesses weren't so bad after all.
