CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE
I wipe my mouth, sighing in relief now that the nausea is gone and my mouth has been thoroughly rinsed.
I turn to Seokjin, only to find him frozen in shock.
"Jin, I-"
"I'm gonna be a dad, " he whispers softly.
And then it hits him, and his face slowly spreads into the widest smile I have ever seen him display.
"I'm gonna be a dad?"
I crack a weak smile and nod, at the very least relieved that he seems to be happy about this. That's better than him storming out the door at least, right?
He sweeps me into a bone crushing hug, and I fall limp in his arms.
"I don't know what to say, " he confesses.
But he is veritably glowing with excitement.
I want to wrap my arms around him, take solace from him. But all I can think about is what the hell am I going to do?
"What's wrong Anna, why aren't you saying anything?"
He pulls away, and take one look at my face.
"Are you upset? Jagi, I know it's not exactly ideal, but everything will be fine, you'll see. I'll be right here to hold your hand the whole way. I promise."
"You're not upset?" I ask, lips trembling with the effort of keeping the tears at bay.
"How could I be? It takes two you know."
I breathe a sigh of relief, and yet the tears come anyway. I throw my arms around him, and cry right there in the bathroom for a good thirty minutes or so. Jin, ever the patient and sympathetic boyfriend, remains still save for the small circles that he runs into my back soothingly.
By the time I'm done crying, I am so tired.
We match solemnly to the bedroom, and Jin tucks back the blanket for me before hopping into bed himself. As I scoot in, and his arms wrap around me from behind, the reality of the situation dawns on me.
Yuri's finally going to get that younger sibling she wanted, it seems.
By the time I wake up, it is bright and sunny. The late evening light filters softly through my bedroom window, and I look around disoriented.
Where's Jin?
What time is it?
I glance at my cellphone, and curse inwardly.
It's already well past noon! I scramble from the bed, fretting about Yuri and her meals as I toss on a clean pair of clothes. I barrel out of the bedroom, down the hallway, and into the kitchen, only to find Seokjin sitting there with Yuri on his lap as they eat lunch together.
"Mommy!" She exclaims excitedly, the first to spot me standing shell shocked in the doorway.
She jumps from Jin's lap and giggles excitedly as she runs towards me.
"Mommy, Jin said you were very tired. Are you sick?"
I lean down to pick her up as Jin watches us with adoring eyes.
"No sweetheart, mommy's not sick. Mommy's gonna be okay."
I nuzzle her nose with my own.
"I didn't want to wake you up, " Seokjin explains, "you haven't slept well lately, and you were sleeping so peacefully. I did feed Yuri breakfast, and she's almost done with her lunch. What do you want for lunch?"
I stare at him blankly.
"I don't really know, " I admit. "I haven't really been able to keep anything down, so I'm almost afraid to eat."
"Well you have to eat something, " Jin insists. "Whatever you want, I'll get it or make it, just let me know."
I release Yuri, setting her down gently on the floor. She rushes back to Seokjin, only to grab her plate and rush back to me.
"Look mommy, I ate all my food!"
I smile, "good girl! What did you eat?"
"Jin made me a sandwich!" She exclaims happily. "With mayonnaise and that funny meat that I really like!"
"You mean bologna?"
"Mhm!" She replies, tiny nose wrinkled in amusement. "But he also made me eat carrots! Yuck!"
"But you ate them?"
She nods excitedly.
"I did!"
"Good girl!" I coo, "I'm so proud of you! You ready to go down for nap?"
She nods, grinning goofily.
"Alright, let's go then!"
I take her small hand as she leads me back down the hall and to her bedroom. Despite all of her energy, the moment I have tucked her into her bed, she is out.
"I'm glad to see she's such a happy kid, " Seokjin murmurs from the doorway.
I smile and stand. Tiptoeing quietly, I escape from Yuri's bedroom successfully. And as I close the door behind me, the quiet sound of her breathing disappears.
"Me too, " I admit. "I've been blessed with such an awesome kid."
I turn to Seokjin.
"But you got her to eat carrots?"
My voice carries an air of disbelief, and he chuckles lightly.
"Yeah, it wasn't easy though."
"How'd you do it?"
As we walk to the living room he explains, "I told her that Santa Claus gives coal to little girls who don't eat their carrots."
He laughs as we sit down, and I too, can't seem to help but laugh.
"I can't believe I never thought of that!" I exclaim, sighing happily as he wraps an arm around me.
I snuggle into his side as he reaches for the remote. With the push of a button, he turns on the tv. Last night it'd been left on the kids channel for Yuri, and the first thing that I see as the screen flashes on is a commercial for the local superstore.
A woman stands before the camera, produce proudly displayed around her.
"I want something sweet, " I murmur softly, suddenly feeling an overwhelming sweet tooth.
Jin chuckles, and shifts against me, standing and leaving me sitting alone on the couch.
"Anything in particular?" He asks.
"Hmm, " I reply, "something creamy."
"Got it, " he smiles. "I'll be right back, okay?"
I smile up at him, and then pucker my lips, silently demanding a kiss. He smiles in return before leaning over to do just that, and then, he is off.
As the door closes behind him, I sigh happily.
I'm still scared, and this situation is still far from ideal. But…
Jin's behaviour gives me hope that just maybe, this might work out. Maybe, just maybe, this doesn't have to be the end of the world. I rub my belly thoughtfully as a surge of tenderness rises in me. Though I'd initially been devasted and upset, a part of me realizes that I want this. Maybe I didn't want it like this, and maybe the timing is off, but…
I want this baby.
And that, as I drowsily rub my own stomach, makes all the difference in the world.
