CHAPTER THIRTY
"What is the meaning of this?"
Seokjin and I stand face to face with one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. I can definitely see the resemblance, anyone with eyes could tell that this woman is where Seokjin gets his good looks from.
"Eomma, " he grins, bowing slightly in respect. "I'd like to introduce you to my fiance, Anna. Anna, this is my mother."
I have to give Jin credit.
I've often heard that you can tell how a man will treat his wife, by how he treats his mother. Jin's already told me a little bit about how estranged he is from his family, mostly due to his decision to stand by his sister and her choice. And yet, he still greets his mother respectfully, and speaks to her kindly.
It says a lot about him, and all of it is good.
The woman glares at me with daggers for eyes, but I bow politely nonetheless, just as Seokjin had. I'm determined to be polite, and respectful, no matter how hard it might be. I won't give Jin any reasons to worry.
But I will also stand my ground.
"It's very nice to meet you."
She scowls, looking at me as if I were an abomination to her eyes.
"I'd say the same, " she retorts coldly, "but that would be a lie."
Jin's jaw tightens, but I squeeze his hand reassuringly. She'll have to try harder than that to get under my skin.
As we follow her through the gates, the gardens, and into her massively sized home, I do my best not to gawk. Everywhere I look there are statues, vases, and paintings. All of which I'm sure cost more than my college tuition ever did.
The marble floor, and high vaulted ceiling, look like something straight out of one of those CEO kdramas, and I nearly chuckle at the irony of it.
I never would have imagined ever seeing such a place with my own, two eyes.
We are led to a sitting room with marbled pillars, and lush, green plants in every corner. I gulp, eying the furniture with hesitation as Seokjin's mother sits. He seems to notice my discomfort, and places a hand upon my back for support. Ignoring the tight scowl upon his mother's face, I take a seat next to him.
"I have to say Jinnie, I expected more from you."
The woman's words are cold, harsh, and she folds one brightly clad leg upon the other as she regards me as if I were a cockroach crawling across the heel of her Louis Vuitton pumps.
"Is this why you won't go to any of the dates I've set up for you? Because of this tramp?"
I bristle as Seokjin returns his mother's scowl right back at him.
"I would appreciate it if you could refrain from insulting my soon to be wife, " he states, eyes narrowed in anger. "But to answer your question, it wouldn't matter whether or not I had Anna. The women that you approve of are no more than gold digging whores. They don't want me, they want my name. Or my money. I'm not interested in people who are fake and shallow, and you know that. I've voiced my opinion on the matter more times than I care to."
Mrs. Kim scoffs, "and you think she doesn't want your money? Come on son, don't be naive."
"Anna isn't like that."
His refute is solid, and instantaneous.
"Oh really?"
The woman turns her kohl-lined eyes to me, and with a false smile, she sets about attempting to prove her point.
"How much?"
"Excuse me?"
Despite my best intentions, I am taken aback, and my voice is laced with righteous fury. I take a deep breath, attempting to push it aside, but the pregnancy hormones make it more than a little difficult.
"How much will it take to get you to leave my son? Thousands? Millions? Name your price. Surely you must know that you are inferior. A man like Seokjin requires a wife with good breeding, and my dear, you most certainly are not. Why, just look at you!"
Jin looks as if he is ready to flee, agitation rolling off of him in waves.
"I told you this was a bad idea, " he whispers, words meant for my ears alone.
But I refuse to back down so easily.
"I'm afraid that I can't be bought, " I tell her, throwing back one of those falsely sweet smiles that she seems to be so fond of. "And I won't be intimidated either. Seokjin and I have something truly special, and you will not exploit me as a weak link in our relationship."
She looks as if she almost wants to strangle me.
"Look, eomma, " Jin cuts in, "we came here today to tell you that our wedding will be in three weeks. Against my advice, Anna is set on inviting you. But, I want you to know that if you step so much as a toe out of line at my wedding, I won't hesitate to disown you, and father too. If you can't accept my decision, this will be my last visit, and the last time I ever consider myself as your son."
She stiffens, eyes going wide at the threat.
"You can't do this to me Jinnie!" She whines. "I've already lost one child, how could you be so cold?"
Jin shakes his head, upset by the audacity of her words.
"I learned it from the best, " he says, pointedly gesturing towards her.
Having said his piece, Seokjin stands, and offers me his hand. His mother continues to glare at me, clearly fuming, but I pay her no heed and take his outstretched hand.
We leave without further delay.
It isn't until we've climbed into his car, and buckled ourselves in, that Jin's shoulders relax.
"You were so brave today, " he murmurs softly, leaning over to place a gentle kiss on my forehead. "I'm very proud of you."
I smile, and fondly intertwine my fingers within his.
"I'm proud of you too, " I return, smiling brightly. "And I love you so, so much."
He smiles, plush lips opening in order to showcase his brilliantly white teeth.
"I love you too, " he replies. "Now let's go get our Yuri bug."
Our.
"I like the sound of that."
