CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

"You should have seen the look on her face!" Jo exclaims to her husband, who seems to only be half paying attention.

Jun and Yuri sit together beside me at the table, each coloring their own little activity paper as we await the arrival of our food. Though, occasionally, Namjoon will lean over and demand that Yuri look at his scribbled handiwork.

"It pretty Yuri?" He asks adorably, obviously fishing for compliments from his favorite friend.

"It's very pretty, " she chirps happily, patting his little head with her hand.

"Pretty like Yuri?" He queries, nearly toppling over his booster seat in his attempt to force his way into Yurii's space.

She pushes him upright, and then giggles happily.

"Yes Joonie, it's pretty just like me."

I smile, anytime we get these two together it's nearly too adorable to handle. And nearly everytime, baby fever starts to set in and I wonder whether or not I'll ever get the chance to give Yuri a little sibling.

"Isn't Seokjin a little late?" Jo asks, glancing in the direction of the door furtively. "If he's too much longer the food will already have arrived, his is gonna get cold."

I nod, not terribly worried. I'd heard from him only about ten minutes ago, when we'd ordered our food. He hadn't arrived yet, so I'd called him to determine whether or not he was going to be able to make it. He'd assured me that he was on his way, and asked that I order for him.

"I'm sure he'll be here soon." I reply.

A quick glance to the back of the restaurant  reveals our server, laden with trays of food. I thank her curtly as she hands us our food one by one, gazing at Jo disbelievingly as she simply begins to dig in.

"Wha?" She asks, mouth full of noodles. "It's good!"

Namjoon giggles at his mother, squishing a fistful of nuggets in his chubby hand and pointing with the other.

"Mama funny."

"Your mother is quite funny, isn't she?" I reply happily.

Out of the corner of my eye, I spot a small commotion at the front door. Seokjin has arrived, it seems, and as per usual he seems to have also caught the attention of several giggling females.

"I swear, why do they always giggle?" I ask Jo, who seems to have noticed it as well.

"Hey!" Jin exclaims, having legged it to our table in a rather elegant, rather graceful fashion. "Sorry I'm late! Work ran a little late, there was a lot of paperwork today."

He eagerly sits, leans forward and kisses me softly on the forehead, and then turns around to do the same for Yuri.

"How's my girls doing today? You look beautiful by the way." He says, turning to me with a smile.

I blush and reply with a soft 'thank you' before returning back to my food.

The four of us adults actually settle into an easy conversation, and I marvel to find that Seokjin fits so effortlessly into my small family. Jo had already taken an instant shining to him, as had Yuri, and even Namjoon seems to be warming up to him as we continue to converse.

Jo's husband chats amicably with him too, and I can't help but smile a little.

"So, " Jo queries, "what do you do for a living?"

"Ah, " Jin replies, rubbing the back of his neck, clearly embarrassed. "I'm just your average office worker really."

She frowns, and for a moment I'm afraid. My stomach begins to churn in knots, I feel as if I'm about to vomit.

"That's a lie, " she declares, eyes fierce, "I happen to know that your suit alone costs more than my house. And my house ain't cheap."

"I need to go, " I think to myself, and my hand is on Yuri's chair, ready to snatch her and go.

I'm sure that Jo is about to humiliate me, and possibly even reveal something that I myself have been slightly skeptical of, but I've been far too afraid to ask. The truth is, I'm not sure I really want to know the answer.

Seokjin dresses far too well for 'just an average office worker'. The car that he drives is far too nice, and even his manners scream 'expensive tastes'. Like the way that he always folds his legs, how he always sits a little too straight.

And I've seen his watch.

But instead, Jo surprises me, and steers the conversation into a more amenable direction. Her gaze softens, and once more she proves her ability to read the room.

"If you don't want to tell us what you do, " she says, "that's fine. Just say so. But don't lie to us. Don't lie to Anna. Okay?"

Seokjin nods, looking thoroughly chastened and slightly mortified.

"Absolutely. I'm so sorry."

His ears are brightly pink, and he bows his head ever so slightly in deference. "I really like Anna, and my work is such a stressful thing. For now, I'd rather keep the two as far apart, if possible."

Jo looks satisfied, smug even, but all I feel is numb. He lied to me.

That's a huge no-no in my book.

"Thank you for ordering for me jagi, " he says brightly, still pink as he turns to me.

But then, as he sees the look on my face, he realizes that I'm upset.

"Jagi, I'm really sorry, I promise I don't do anything bad. I really do work in an office."

I turn back to my food, filtering out everything else aside from Yuri. Yuri is looking at me curiously, I think she's caught on that there is something different between Jin and I.

His use of endearments didn't escape Yuri's attention, and the kiss to my forehead probably didn't help either.

"Anna?" Jo looks at me questioningly. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine, " I snap, but then my eyes go wide as I realize what I've done.

Jo's eyes remain unfazed however, and once again I am so grateful that she is my best friend.

"I'm sorry, " I apologize, "but really, I'm okay."

But no matter how much I repeat it, the knowing look never leaves her eyes, nor, does the churning in my gut.
