The Will of Crota
Fireteam Conquistador in its entirety arrived in front of the vanguard and Eris Morn. Each of them appeared to be fairly well rested and stood in front of them. "So, Might, Fist, Heart. What's left?" James asked them.
"The Eyes of Crota were killed by a fireteam about an hour ago," Eris remarked coldly. "Now only Omnigul is left."
"Wasn't Omnigul the one that trapped us in the warmind chamber with one of those mega ogres?" Aaron asked.
"Mega ogre isn't the proper term but yes."
"Where do we find her?" James asked.
Eris pulled up a holographic map of the Cosmodrome for all of the guardians to look at. It pointed to a section of the Cosmodrome that they had never seen before, or ever been to. James got a closer look at the map, he remembered going there and there not being anything past it, just a large steel door with a keypad. "Eris, that door's blocked off."
"You may want to check that again James because Omnigul is in there."
"Understood, and why is it exactly that we are going after all of these minions when we should be focusing on the big bad himself?"
"We need to disrupt the chain of command James. Military strategy one-o-one, if we manage to kill his commanders, the minions will be without direction. Then we can focus on Crota himself." Eris replied slightly annoyed.
"Okay, got it," James replied. "So where's the LZ?"
The members of the group looked at him oddly. "Sorry, landing zone."
"You'll be landing right here," Eris said pointing to a section of the Rocket Yard. "The fallen have set up some anti-air tanks on the outskirts of the Skywatch; we have a fireteam out there to deal with the guns, in the meantime, you'll have to make do with what we have," Eris stated to the group.
"Alright, move out!" James exclaimed throwing his helmet on his head. The four guardians all suited up and headed out to the hangar bay once again. James headed out in his ship first and with thrusters at maximum air velocity. The others followed suit behind him.
"So big boss, what's the plan?" Cameron asked him playfully. Aaron and Sidriks were both astonished; she was usually the one to come up with the plans. They both decided to see how James would take this new role.
"We get down there and progress through the refinery to get to the Skywatch, once there we hop on our sparrows and speed toward the Terrestrial complex. Once there we continue pushing forward, and if the other fireteam requires assistance in disabling those anti-aircraft cannons, we help 'em out." He said over the radio as the group approached Cosmodrome airspace.
"You got it," Aaron replied approving of James's plan.
The team finally landed in the Rocket Yard. This was a place that James had seldom visited, it was all just so, similar. Rusted train cars blanketed in snow and buried in the ground was a similar aesthetic for both this area and the refinery only several minutes ahead. James hopped on his sparrow and started speeding the way toward the Skywatch. "I wonder if Charon is a member of that fireteam?" James mused himself continuing to drive.
The wind continued to blow through the snow drenched Cosmodrome it was a calming gentle breeze, a sound that was only interrupted by the random explosion or gunfire. It wasn't a long drive to the refinery, literally only thirty seconds. James decided on the route through the refinery because it would give them access to the Terrestrial Complex first. From what James could remember its purpose that was the building that was used to oversee the colonization of the newly terraformed terrestrial planets in the solar system. The place was filled with brilliant scientists and cautious investors.
The group made their way through the refinery relatively quickly and headed their way towards the entrance to the compound. "The layout of this place always confused me," Aaron remarked as he stepped off his sparrow.
"Why's that?" Cameron asked.
"I just don't understand why they literally made a roadway that goes up from an ocean."
"Well, you have to keep in mind Aaron that it wasn't always like this. The odds are that the boats were further out than this and the water level was much lower." Cameron remarked.
"She's right, they were."
"Ha, you say that...like..you..were...there." Aaron's voice trailed off as his eyes widened. "So you finally did it?" He asked getting a grasp on what was going on.
"Yeah, Charon helped me get my memories back. Now a lot of things are as clear as day for me."
"Well, that's good. Let's keep moving." He replied with a smile as they progressed. The team traveled up a flight of rusted stairs into a room. The door ahead was blocked by a fallen laser gate. James walked over to the command console for the machinery.
"You sure you can handle this?" Ghost asked him telepathically.
"I think so," James replied placing his hand on the console and holding his rifle in the other. Fallen began to move in to disrupt the disabling process. "Keep them off me! I'm gonna get the door open."
"Understood," Sidriks replied removing his sword from one of the fallen captains. The fallen began to swarm the room from shanks to captains and every which fallen in between.
"James! May I ask what it is that you're doing over there?! And whatever it is can you hurry the hell up?!" Aaron demanded as his arc blade connected with a dreg's abdomen as he was then tackled from behind by another one.
"Sorry, I'm not familiar with this kind of tech." He replied still breaking the codes to the laser gates ahead of them. He learned that he could fix systems and take their memory, this was the first time that he was using it to break something.
"You need some help?" Ghost asked him.
"If I don't learn how to break this now then I never will. Thank you, but no thank you." James replied searching through the fallen shield tech.
Then he heard a screech. "Ghost, you wouldn't mind taking over for a bit would you?"
"Not at all, I'll show you what I'm doing in a small corner of your hud. I can teach you how to hack these sorts of terminals." He remarked floating over to the terminal.
"Thanks, I appreciate that," James replied putting his gun in both of his hands. From several doorways, thrall began to pour in in waves.
"It's like Black Friday all over again," James said to himself firing into the thrall crowds. "Except this time the people literally want to kill me."
James and the MDU were required to handle a major issue on Black Friday one year. There was a group of terrorists who had detonated a bomb in the middle of Times Square in New York; causing a building to be heavily damaged. The building was on the verge of collapse, and it was arguably the most populated building around that time of year. James, Bastion, Sawata, and Zen, were required to get inside of the building to save the people who remained trapped. They were sent in because of how they would be alright in case of the collapse of the building.
James remembered that Sawata was able to cut through the steel beams as they began to fall before they could reach one of the people. It was a little girl. James wondered what became of her as he put his rifle on his back and began using his voidfang fists. James started punching the thrall that were advancing towards him, and with each time his fist would connect with one of the small gray frames they would combust.
Sidriks put away his swords and started using his shrapnel launcher, all the while he could see James out of the corner of his eyes. "What else is he able to do?" He thought to himself as he sank his shrapnel launchers bayonet into a thrall following up with a shot to its chest. Sidriks remembered the light warriors of his world. They weren't called guardians as they are here, they were called knights. The knight orders were those who had protected the world until pride and lusts for power divided them and dissolved them.
"Cameron! You ready?" James asked her.
"Give me the ball coach!" She replied.
Ever since they first pulled off this maneuver during the Black Garden Crisis, they've worked hard to perfect it. They never came up with a name, but Cameron prefers to call it Slam Dunk. She'd sometimes play basketball with her old fireteam when they had off time. She enjoyed playing that, now she can't do it. Not that she was at all bad at the game it would just make her too sad. This was different, James would throw her the most explosive basketball ever, and she would supercharge it with her fist of havoc ability.
Lord Shaxx had witnessed this level of teamwork between the two of them in the crucible before. He'd seen entire teams leave when they would use that technique, and the other members of their team would be in awe at what they had achieved. He thought that the others were cowardly for leaving after that, but deep down he couldn't blame them. It's as if the sun exploded in a small area of the arena. Control points when they were being captured became a joke for the two of them; it gave them an opportunity to show off one of the best abilities they have at their disposal.
James threw his nova bomb over to Cameron, and she leaped into the air and let her fists charge with arc energy. The cold sphere then collided with her hands and then she slammed the orb charged with her own energy into the ground. The surge of both arc and void energy encompassed the room obliterating the hive and the fallen inside. Cameron then stood up from the ground. "MAN THAT NEVER GETS OLD!" She exclaimed happily.
James smiled under his helmet. He loved seeing her happy like that, it wasn't rare, but he still loved it.
"Okay, it's open!" Ghost exclaimed heading back over to James.
The group headed up the new flight of stairs and into a room. "I remember this place; this was where I reactivated the orbital defense grid," Sidriks remarked as the headed out. They glanced over to the huge platform ahead of them to see a fallen walker. This one, however, was different than the one that they had encountered before. This walker had two of the heavy arc cannons on top of its turret, and its main gun had the laser activated all the time as if it was hooked up to a targeting computer. The walker was a gold color with a blue head and turret.
"James! We could use some help down here if you and your friends don't mind." Charon stated to him as he was hiding behind a pillar. The turret on the walker was still focused on the skies above while the bottom half rotated to face the group. The minigun on the walker's chin began to spin up and fire explosive blue bolts in the general direction of the guardians. The other members of Charon's fireteam were under attack by some snipers ahead of them. It was a titan and another warlock.
"This is new, when did the fallen cook this up?!" Aaron exclaimed over the gunfire.
"I don't know; I think that they were getting tired of us having ships fly overhead!" Charon replied.
"May I ask who this person is James?!" Sidriks asked peeking out and firing at the snipers that had the others pinned down ahead of them.
"It's a friend of mine. He helped me get my memories back." He replied firing ahead.
"Well, a friend of yours is a friend of mine. Pleased to meet you, Charon." Sidriks stated to him.
"Pleased to meet you too." He replied. Charon felt odd fighting alongside a fallen. However, he noticed how he was trusted by James and the rest of his team. Charon had a deep resentment for the fallen after Kronah's death, but he had no idea as to what he was supposed to do about this scenario. He trained himself to hate the fallen, but Sidriks was a guardian. "Maybe he's an exception to the rule." He thought to himself.
"So what now?!" Charon exclaimed pulling out his hawkmoon and firing at the tank.
James peeked around the corner of the pillar to look at the tank. "It may be different in comparison to the other tanks we've fought before, but the design is still inherently the same. It has six legs, and if we damage them, then the core will open to expose itself. The core takes about thirty seconds to cool down and compensate for the armor loss, which will give us time to strike the core directly." He stated to the group.
"Sounds ideal," Sidriks replied activating his shadow sneak ability climbed to the top of the building they were under.
"What the.."Charon's voice trailed off as it was then interrupted by a resounding explosion off in the distance. It was ahead of them nearly four kilometers away.
"I'll draw it's fire, focus on its legs!" Sidriks stated shooting his wire rifle into the tank ahead of them. The tank looked up at the captain and began firing its Gatling gun.
"You heard 'em, let's go!" Cameron stated shooting the under barrel rockets from the Patriot at the walker's legs. The group followed up, focusing on the legs of the tank. After the group managed to disable one of the legs the core opened for the team.
"IT'S OPEN! FIRE AT WILL!" Sidriks stated to the group shooting at the core. The team below him then moved ahead and toward the side of the tank. James decided to get as close as possible because the tank would have to go back for it to fire its Gatling gun on the team. Aaron pulled out his hand cannon, and the cricket and dual wield fired them at the tank's core. Due to the amount of fire that it was sustaining from the seven guardians that were in the immediate area the tank had to close its core prematurely.
"Okay, it's shut. Focus on the legs again! We got this!" James exclaimed reloading the paragon.
The group continued to fire into the legs of the tank. The fallen began sending in skiffs with troopers in to halt their progress against the tank. James then activated radiance and threw the gun on his back. "I'll take care of this," James stated to the group as they continued to fire into the crowd. He then activated an arm sword and held his void one in the other. James leaped up into the air and dove down to start picking off the fallen that had surrounded the area.
James hadn't actually tested how strong the solar arm sword was. He knew it could cut through flesh and bone easily, much like a hot knife through butter, but what couldn't it cut through? James pierced the chest of a vandal with one blade then sliced him in two with the other. The Dark Drinker was just as powerful as the arm blade as it currently stood, but the aftereffect of the arm blade was much more resonating. Where the blade was sheathed into the vandal's flesh, there was a hole, and his flesh was charred around it. His armor was an orange around the rim of the hole where the blade entered.
James then moved quickly over to the other fallen who were dropped off the ship. A captain swung a sword at him from behind, but something happened that he did not expect. The moment his blade made contact with James's armor it melted. James then turned around and delivered a punch to the captain's jaw causing his head to spin sending him sprawling onto the floor.
The team continued to focus on the tank ahead. However, the other three who joined them had a hard time focusing on anything other than James. Fireteam Olympic was the name of their group, they had heard of Conquistador before this point, but they had never seen what they were actually capable of. James continued his warpath as the fallen tried futility to stop him. The core to the tank exposed itself to the team once again.
"JAMES, NOW!" Cameron yelled to him.
James then leaped onto the tank and sunk his arm sword into the core of the vehicle. The tank then deactivated, and James removed his arm from the tank chassis. "Keep moving Omnigul isn't too far from your current location," Eris stated to them.
"Thanks for the help James, where are you headed next?" Charon asked him placing a new mag in his hand cannon.
"We're headed to the Jovian complex; we need to take out a hive wizard named Omnigul." He stated.
"You mind if I come along?" He asked.
"That depends, are those anti-air guns down?" James asked him.
"Yep, all of 'em."
"Excellent, then sure."
Charon eagerly held out his hand cannon and got ready for the rest of the team to move on.
"Alright let's go."
The group all loaded up and headed out to the building ahead which would grant them access to the Skywatch. The team made their way outside of the rusted corridors of the building that lay behind them, and they noticed the hive seeder that was to their right.
"Hmmm, let me check the criteria here. One, spooky and we've never been? Check. Two, had a large locked door only a few months ago? Check." Ghost noted to James
Then the team heard a high pitched scream coming from the Hive Seeder. "Obvious indicator as to where she is? Check."The group descended into the hive seeder and toward the large steel door that lay ahead of them.
"I thought Eris said that the door wasn't locked," Cameron remarked looking at the large door ahead of them.
"Do you want me to unlock it?" Athena asked her.
"No, I've got this." She replied pulling her fist back and letting the arc energy flow into it. She thrust her fist into the door causing it to fly back to the other side of the room ahead of them.
"You know, you could have been more subtle right?" Athena remarked to her guardian.
"Yeah, but don't act like that wasn't cool." She replied.
"I'm not gonna admit that."
"You kind of already did."
The team then moved forward into this new area. The feature that was most jarring to them was how many hive crystals and weird decaying barnacles on the floor and the walls. The smell of decay and death was stronger in this area than it was in other parts of the Cosmodrome where the barnacles were found.
"What are these things exactly?" James asked bending down to get a better look at it.
"Truth is nobody really knows," Cameron replied.
James then stood up and walked over to the rest of his team. They then moved to a large corridor, and they immediately noticed the wizard at the end of it. "You think that's her?" Aaron asked in a whisper.
"I don't know, let's find out," James replied. "OMNIGUL!"
The wizard turned around to face them. "So, the infestation continues." She said to the team. "DESTROY THEM!" She screeched summoning a massive scourge of hive warriors to assault them. Ogres, knights with swords, acolytes, thralls, everything was headed their way. Omnigul began floating away up a massive hill inside of the compound.
"COWARD!" Sidriks exclaimed activating his solar ax ability. He then started cleaving into one of the knights chopping him in half with a single stroke vertically. Aaron pulled out his golden gun and fired into a group of the acolytes that were running towards them. The skirmish then fell into full swing, with abilities and gunfire being used left and right. Cameron then slammed her arc charged fists into the ground causing a shock wave to flow forward disintegrating anything that was in its path.
Shots from the paragon lit up a small section of the room ahead of them, movedThe rounds piercing target after target.
"Keep moving forward!" James yelled as he progressed ahead. The team went behind him cutting, blasting, and walking slowly through the waves of hive soldiers that blocked their path. The crowd felt as if it wouldn't have ended until they made it to the top of the hill. "Well, nowhere else to go but left," James remarked as they headed into the large room.
There the wizard stood. "YOU STILL PERSIST?! WHY?! HAVE YOU NOT REALIZED BY NOW THAT THERE IS NO HOPE?!"
"Well, that hasn't stopped us before," Charon remarked.
"ENOUGH, YOUR HERESY ENDS HERE!" She screeched summoning more of her soldiers to the battlefield.
The team readied themselves again to take down the monster horde. James, however, focused on Omnigul herself. "So, you said something about there being no hope?"
"Precisely, you, your entire race, and planet are doomed. Crota will be freed soon, and once he is there will be nothing you will be able to do to stop him."
James began to glow an orange, and with a fwoosh, the fiery wings of radiance appeared. James activated an arm sword on his left hand and let it extend so that it was touching the floor. "WHAT!?" She exclaimed.
"There's a little something that you might want to consider. Back then, they didn't have me."
"WHAT ARE YOU!?"
"I'm just another warlock." He said he then inserted the blade through her abdomen, then in a swift spinning motion cut her in half. Her torso was separated from her legs, and she faded away. "THIS IS NOT OVER!" She exclaimed. Without a commanding officer, the soldiers fled the area.
"Excellent work. Now only Crota himself remains." Eris stated to them over the comm.
"Rodger that, we'll be heading back any minute now to debrief," James replied.
