Chapter Ten
The dingy cell turned ice cold as Rolland opened the door and stepped in. I gazed at the prince's face, desperately hoping to find some sort of mercy or kindness, but I was sorely disappointed. His deadly pale face betrayed no emotion at all, no warmth or signs of life at all, not even rage or anger. He looked more like a machine than a human.
"Savannah Reid?" His mouth curled in disgust as he said my name, as if saying it was the worst possible thing ever. "Is that your name?"
I nodded quickly.
He took one step closer. On instinct, I took one step back and felt the cool prison wall behind me. He leaned closer, but took care not to touch me, and whispered harshly, "You've been summoned."
Ew, he spits when he talks. Definitely not a fan of that. I wiped the spit off my face. "Where?" I was proud of my voice for not wavering.
Instead of answering, he snapped his fingers. Immediately, two guards appeared behind him, as if out of thin air. The guards undid my chains and grasped my arms roughly. Rolland turned and left the cell. My guards dragged me behind him.
Well, voice in my head, what am I supposed to do now?
Nothing. Just go with him. Don't struggle. I'll take care of the rest.
Okay so I guess the voice in my head wants me to be suicidal. Love that for me. But as always, I decided to do what the voice wanted, because I had nothing better to do.
The guards dragged me to a huge door. When it was opened, I saw that it led to the throne room. As I was brought it, I saw that the thrones were occupied by King Ashton and Queen Tatiana. Rolland took his place beside them. The guards threw me at their feet. Was this it? Was I to be sentenced to execution here?
"Savannah Reid," The king seemed to share Rolland's distaste of my name, "how lovely to see you here." It didn't seem like he found that lovely at all. "Now, I'm sure you know what questions I'm about to ask. Where did you get your powers? And how do you activate them?"
I rose off the ground, praying my voice doesn't shake. "I don't know. I really don't know," I stammered, silently cursing myself for letting them see my fear.
"Ah, that's what I feared." The king raised his arms and signaled something to the two guards beside me. Without warning, the two raised their swords against me and charged. I screamed, and tried to cover my face with my arms.
What are you doing? You do realize that whatever you are doing is not going to save you from swords, right? Use your powers instead. Open that door inside you. Let the magic out.
At the last moment, the guards redirected their swords away from me and used their fists against me instead. As they punched me, I fell onto the floor and curled into a ball. This was also not a good idea. The two began to kick me in the stomach instead. With each kick, came a burst of pain, but also came a burst of anger. I let my anger consume me as I shouted. My shouts turned into a roar.
My vision blurred as the same light I saw in the square surrounded me. When the guards kicked me again, they were the ones screaming. I looked up and saw their shoes melting away due to the heat radiating from me. I saw their feet covered in burns. With another roar of fury, I was able to create a protective wall of fire around me. I looked up at the king and the guards, daring anyone to try me.
Instead, the king merely applauded. "Well done. Well done, indeed." He turned to the queen. "You were right, my dear, we can certainly turn her into a war weapon." The king turned back towards me in delight. "You will become our weapon. You will destroy our enemies for us. And if you fail, your sister will most certainly pay the price."
My eyes widened. "You have my sister? Impossible!" It couldn't be true, it just couldn't.
"Oh yes, I have Lilac, and what's that rabbit's name, Daisy? Yeah, I've got her too." His eyes glittered.
What kind of sick person kidnaps a person's sister and their rabbit? The voice in my head promised that Lilac would be okay.
I did. And she will be. Trust me.
I don't even know what to believe at this point. I turned to the king and said in my bravest voice, "Okay, I'll do what you want." I felt like I was making the biggest mistake of my life, but how bad could it be if it meant Lilac was safe?
"If that is all, guards please show her to her rooms. As for me, I am going to go take a nap. Nefarious doings take a toll on my energy levels." Everyone turned to Queen Tatiana as she rose and motioned for the guards. I kept staring at the queen. Even as the guards took hold of me and dragged me away, I kept looking at the queen. Her voice matched the voice I've been hearing in my head.
